Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of RAFT and conventional technique in improving high and low motivated students’ skill in writing expository text and explained the motivation interaction to their skill.  RAFT is a system to help students understand their role as a writer, audience, varied formats for writing, and expected content. This research uses factorial design with 36 students of experimental group and 34 in control group. They are eleventh graders of MA Tarbiyatul Banin, Winong-Pati. The result shows that RAFT is effective in improving the high and low motivated students’ skill in writing expository text on the level of significance 0.05, the conventional technique is effective in improving the high and low motivated students’ skill in writing expository text on the level of significance 0.05. There is interaction of the students’ motivation to students’ skill in writing expository text using RAFT and conventional technique. By using RAFT, the high motivated students’ skill get more improvement and by using conventional technique, the low motivated students’ skill get more improvement. Further, the use of RAFT in improving the students’ skill in writing expository text is more effective than the use of conventional technique.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an important think in learning English. many people assume that pronunciation is the hardest think in learning English. because of the speak muscle, which is usually using the first language, then must speak the word of second language or third language. So that the difficulties in speaking appear. It is influencing the English Education student in IAIN Kudus that English education students. The propose of this research is to improve English pronunciation of English Education Student C’18 IAIN Kudus. This study belongs to experiment research and using pre-test and post-test as the media. The focus of this research is in using U-dictionary to improve English education pronunciation.

Abstract

English is as foreign language for Indonesian students. Hence, they often find the anxiety in learning speaking. This study investigated the categories and factors of students’ anxiety in English as Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This is a case study. It was conducted at IAIN Kudus, especially in speaking classes of the second semester students, English Education Department (EED) in the academic year of 2018/2019. For obtaining the data, the researcher used observation of the class interaction and interview. Based on the analysis, there were two results. The speaking anxiety categories found in EFL classrooms are trait, state, and specific-situation anxiety. And, factors that cause the speaking anxiety are cognitive, affective, and performance factors.

Abstract

In millennial era, many young generations use social media for various purposes. One of them is for improving their English quality. This study aims to know the social media applications mostly used by the students, the English skills can be improved and the reasons why they use social media for improving English quality in millennial era. The participants are30 students of Class B, second semester of English Education Department in IAIN Kudus. In collecting data, this qualitative research used observation, interview and documentation. Based on the data, there are three results. First, the social media applications mostly used by the students are youtube, instagram, facebook, and line. Second, the students’ English skills can be improved by social media in order are listening, speaking, writing and reading. And, they use social media for improving English quality in millennial era because it isfun, interesting, easy to use/access, effective, simple and informative.

Abstract

Abstract. English Education Department at IAIN Kudus is new study program. Nevertheless, the number of the students is always increased every year. This study aims to get information related to the educational background of students, analyze their motivation and expectation in joining English Education Department IAIN Kudus and analyze their ways in realizing the expectations. This study was descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted at English Education Department, IAIN Kudus. The subjects were 204 students from the first to third academic year. Data were collected through questionnaire, interview and document analysis. The results showed that 20,6% are boys and 79,4% are girls. 44, 6% of the students graduated from science program, 26 % from social program, 12,3 % from language program and the rest were from religion, computer and network engineering, sharia banking, accountancy and administration. They take and study English because of internal and external motivation. The internal factors are needs, plan, pleasure and meaning. And the external factors are learning environment, career, society and others. For the expectation, they expect to have class with clear curriculum, Students Centered Learning (SCL) and teaching media that meets their needs so they are able to develop English skills and be good English teacher/educator. And the students’ ways in realizing their expectations are studying hard, critical thinking, using appropriate media and having partner.Keywords: educational background, students’ motivation and expectation, ways Abstrak. Tadris Bahasa Inggris di IAIN Kudus adalah program studi baru. Namun, jumlah mahasiswa selalu bertambah setiap tahun. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan informasi terkait latar belakang pendidikan siswa, menganalisis motivasi dan harapan mereka untuk bergabung dengan Tadris Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus dan menganalisis cara mereka dalam mewujudkan harapan mereka. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif di Tadris Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus. Responden sejumlah 204 mahasiswa dari tahun akademik pertama hingga ketiga. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner, wawancara, dan analisis dokumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 20,6% adalah laki-laki dan 79,4% adalah perempuan. 44, 6% dari mereka lulus dari program sains, 26% dari program sosial, 12,3% dari program bahasa dan sisanya dari agama, teknik komputer dan jaringan, perbankan syariah, akuntansi dan administrasi. Mereka kuliah di TBI IAIN Kudus karena adanya motivasi internal dan eksternal. Faktor internal adalah kebutuhan, rencana, minat dan makna. Dan faktor eksternal adalah lingkungan belajar, karier, masyarakat dan lain-lain. Mereka berharap memiliki kurikulum yang jelas, Student Centered Learning (SCL) dan media pengajaran yang memenuhi kebutuhan mereka sehingga mereka dapat mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris dan menjadi guru / pendidik bahasa Inggris yang baik. Abstract

Most children like and enjoy singing songs. It can be used as one of materials for foreign language learning. Using nursery rhymes in the classroom can be a great break from following a set curriculum. This study aims to know the way to acquaint English to young learners through nursery rhymes, to identify the criteria of nursery rhymes that suits on the students, and to know the strengths and challenges in acquainting English to young learners through nursery rhymes at Playgroup. Qualitative research was employed to conduct this study. To collect the data, some techniques were carried out namely observation, interview, and documentation. The results revealed that the acquaintance of young learners English through nursery rhymes considers the content; students’ readiness, and class atmosphere, the nursery rhymes must teach the character education; the strengths in acquainting English to young learners through nursery rhymes at Halimatus Sa’diyah playgroup are the commitment among the manager/organizers, teachers and parents and the high awareness that English is important. And, the challenges are low teacher’s pedagogical competency, facilities, curriculum/material, and non-English school or living environment.
