Abstract

The study was aimed at determining the effectiveness of learning using TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) framework in helping the change of reasoning patterns and modes of Biology prospective teachers so that it facilitates in encompassing the Embryology as one of abstract concepts. The subjects used were 49 students of Biology teachers who were having a contract in Embryology course in Biology Education Study Program, in a private educational institute in Bandung. The research design used was quasi-experimental with time-series design type.  The measurement of the level of reasoning ability, patterns, and modes of the students were done through the Test of Logical Thinking (ToLT) three times (before the learning program takes place, after learning the first four main subjects, and after the learning program was over). The results showed that the Embryology learning with TPACK framework could directly change the from concrete and transitional reasoners categories to formal reasoners. The learning with TPACK framework also influenced the shift of the students’ logical thinking modes; from the ownership of proportional and/or correlational mode to the ownership of two or three reasoning modes between proportional, probability, correlational, and combinatorial, except the variable control mode.

Abstract

Traditional herbal medicines are now increasingly being appreciated with Western models of integrative health sciences and evidence-based approach both in the basic research and clinic scenario. Ashwagandha is a commonly used plant in Ayurvedic, Indian traditional medicine. Medicinal value of Ashwagandha (WithaniasomniferaDunal) extends from anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-rheumatic, rejuvenation and anti-cancer. Based on the belief that holistic multi-site mechanism of action offers greater chance of success, the traditional Ayurvedicmedicine practices the use of whole herb or its crude extract. It opposes with the mainstream of pharmaceutical industry that uses single and purified molecules. In the present study, we used bioinformatics approach to reveal the mechanism of action of (i) crude extract of Ashwagandha leaf extract and its purified components, (ii) Withanone and (iii) Withaferin A. Whereas p53-p21 was identified as a common signaling pathway for the three kinds of reagents, specific signaling pathways for Withaferin-A and Withanone were identified. Whereas the crude extract and Withanone were selectively toxic to human cancer cells, Withaferin A showed cytotoxicity to the normal cells too. The study suggested that the crude extract or a combinational formulamay be a superior and safenatural reagent for cancer treatment.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between multiple intelligences with higher-order thinking skills. The research sample consisted of 15 grade X students in one of the state high schools. The research method used in this research is quantitative descriptive method using correlation. The instrument used in this study was a set of questionnaires and multiple intelligence test questions as well as higher-order thinking skills tests that had been judged by expert lecturers and tested. Multiple intelligence questionnaires are used to determine the type of intelligence students have, while multiple intelligence tests and higherorder thinking skills are made according to the concept of Vertebrates. The eight types of intelligence in this study are linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist intelligence. As a result, each student has a different type of intelligence, while linguistic and visual-spatial intelligence is a type of intelligence that is not possessed by students. Every intelligence is closely related to students' higher-order thinking skills. Students with logical-mathematical intelligence types tend to have higher-order thinking skills better than students who have other types of intelligence. The research hypothesis was tested with the Pearson Product Moment correlation formula with α = 0.05. Correlation coefficient obtained by 0.921 which means there is a very strong relationship between multiple intelligences and higher-order thinking skills

Abstract

This study aimed to overcome the intrinsic cognitive load in reproductive system learning by providing brain dump activities. Quasi-experimental was used in this study by using the post-test only control group design. A total of 41 students of the XI class was involved in this study which were divided into two groups, namely the treatment group and the control group. Learning was carried out in two meetings which are asynchronously and synchronously learning in two groups. Brain dump activities were carried out by asking four questions, namely: what you are thinking about, what you will do, what are the three main priorities that will be done, and what you are grateful for. Intrinsic cognitive load was measured using a subjective rating scale with a scale of 1 - 8 at each meeting. In treatment group, intrinsic cognitive load was lower than the control group. The results of the mean difference test in intrinsic cognitive load showed a significant difference (sig. = 0.0190.050) between the treatment group and the control group. These results illustrate that in reproductive system learning using brain dump activities can overcome students' intrinsic cognitive load.

Abstract

Withania somnifera (family Solanaceae), known commonly as Ashwaganda, is one of the important medicinal plants, and recent studies reported that Withanone, one of the chemical components in this plant, has ability to kill cancer cell. Because of endemic state of this plant to South Asia, exploring plant species under the same family which grow well in Indonesia has been of interest. The purpose of this study was to screen the Indonesian plant which has strong phylogenetic relationship with Ashwaganda. Thus, phylogenetic analysis using DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was conducted. Thus, 19 species of Solanaceae and two species of Convolvulaceae as outgroup were examined. Five ITS regions of Ashwaganda retrieved from GenBank were included in the phylogenetic analysis. Parsimony analysis showed that Indonesia Solanaceae comprises seven groups which is consistent with the global Solanaceae relationship as previously reported. Furthermore, our study revealed that two species, Physalis angulata and Physalis peruviana, are relative to W. somnifera. Morphologically, they share characters of flower and fruit. This result indicated that these two species are potential to have similar chemical properties as Ashwaganda, thus we can have new variants of Withanone originated from Indonesia with similar effect.

Abstract

The student's ability to understand evolutionary studies is determined by representing a phylogenetic tree or cladogram. This study aims to determine the tree thinking ability, especially the students' reading ability in interpreting the cladogram. This descriptive study involved 29 students as subjects. Students are selected by purposive random sampling, only students who have attended and studied evolution courses. The data collection instrument used tests and interview guidelines. The test questions consist of 20 multiple choice questions with five answer choices. The difficulty level of the questions used includes understanding, applying, analyzing, and evaluating. The phylogenetic tree interpretation refers to four indicators, including the most recent common ancestor (MRCA), monophyletic group, branch proximity, contemporary descendant, and counting the branch or nodes position. The data obtained were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013 and Anates-V4, then presented in percentage form. The results showed that many students misinterpreted the cladogram. Furthermore, errors in cladogram interpretation occurred in monophyletic group indicators (38%), most common ancestor (59%), branch proximity (41%), contemporary ancestry (39%), and branch position calculations (53%). These results indicate that misreading of analysis in cladogram interpretation is moderate to high, so it is necessary to formulate the most appropriate way to teach phylogenetic studies in evolution.
