Abstract

Painting has undergone many developments. One of them is technical development in terms of materials. One of the unique techniques in painting is the gutta tamarind technique which uses ground tamarind seeds that are ground. This study aims to examine the use of tamarind seeds as an alternative medium in the work. Gutta tamarind is popular because the material used resembles the material for batik. However, in the process of using it, gutta tamarind which is also known as cold wax does not require a heating stove like the hot wax of batik in general. In this study, we will discuss the process of making cold wax from tamarind seed powder. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method by studying the manufacture of cold wax gutta tamarind in stages. The results of this study indicate that the gutta tamarind technique in the process of making textile paintings or wastra paintings produces characters that are no less unique and beautiful.

Ancient manuscripts are artifacts that indicate high intellectual abilities in old civilizations. The content is very valuable as well as a means of communicating and expressing ideas that can provide information about civilization and past life. Javanese society is one of the communities who inherited ancient manuscripts. The manuscript is decorated with beautiful illuminations that signify the aesthetics of the creators. The illumination has a n implied value and becomes a trace of the cultural identity of the society. The values implied in the manuscript will be much more useful if it is disseminated to provide high moral understanding and insight. In addition, ancient manuscripts can be a source of inspiration for creation that can support efforts to perpetuate cultural heritage in the archipelago. This paper discusses the results of research originating from the transformation process of ancient manuscript illumination into batik. Abstract

The puppet play Dewa Ruci contains many values, including spiritual values. This research aims to discuss the spiritual values of the play as expressed in a two-dimensional work. The works discussed in this research were created using Alma M. Hawkins creation method, which is carried out in three stages: exploration, improvisation, and formation. The works discussed are two two-dimensional artworks entitled “Mati Sajroning Urip” and “Ajeg”. The method of analysis used to discuss the sample works is Feldman s method of analysis, which consists of description, formal analysis, and interpretation. The result of this research shows the presence of dragon objects in the artworks taken from the story of Dewa Ruci, which represent humans with their duality: the nurturing side and the destructive side that are necessary to achieve true perfection. The use of red represents lust, white represents emptiness (suwung), and gold represents the peak of spiritual experience.
