Abstract

Introduction: Currently dental implants are a prosthetic treatment that many patients are interested in replacing missing teeth because they are considered to be more stable in restoring the function of rehabilitation mastication. The success of implant treatment is determined by various factors, one of which is systemic disease. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that is accompanied by hyperglycemia and causes various side effects, and is one of the risk factors that can have an impact on the installation of dental implants. Objective: To evaluate whether dental implants can be installed in patients with DM. Literature review: A literature search was conducted using Pubmed to find research and review articles on the use of implants in patients with DM published until September 2019. Searches were conducted during October 2019. Discussion: Patients with DM are more susceptible to periodontal disease compared to patients without DM. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes are more prone to complications after implant therapy than patients with controlled diabetes. Good glycemic control can increase osseointegration and implant success. Conclusion: Dental implant placement can be done in DM patients with good metabolic control as in patients without DM.
