Abstract

This research aimed to study the effect of microclimate modification of pensby misting and the goats breeds (Boer and Ettawa crossbreeds) on physiological responses to adapt to the hot  environments. The study was conducted from August-September 2018 at the UPTD Goat Breeding Center, Lampung Plantation and Livestock Service Office located in Negeri Sakti, Pesawaran Regency. The study used a split plot design in completely randomized design. Two treatments were applied in this study, namely modification of the pen consisting of pens without misting and pens with misting and the goat breed namely Boerawa and Ettawa crossbreed (PE). Twelve female goats were used in this study, each of six Boerawa and PE respectively. The parameters observed were microclimate conditions, namely air temperature, relative humidity, and Temperature Humidity Index (THI) and physiological responses consisted of respiration rate, heart rate, rectal temperature, and Heat Tolerance Coefficient (HTC). The results showed that there was no effect of the interaction between the treatment of misting and the breeds of goat on respiration rate, heart rate, rectal temperature, and HTC. Misting can improve air temperature, THI, respiration rate and HTC, on the other hand, does not affect the heart rate and rectal temperature. Goat breed has no effect on all physiological responses. Thus, modification of the microclimate by misting effectively maintains body temperature under normal conditions and increases the adaptability of goats to hot environments. Keywords: Physiological Responses, Microclimate Conditions, Microclimate Modification, Misting

Abstract

This research was conducted to study the effect of ration with certain ratio of forage-concentrate and the time of feeding on productivity of male local rabbits. Eighteen rabbits were used in Completely Randomized Block Design with factorial pattern 3 x 2. The rabbits was devided in three groups based on its body weight. Body weight of the first group, the second group, and the third group respectively 1.085 -1.185 g, 1.200-1.365 g, and 1.380-1.530 g. There were two factors in this design. The first factor were ration with certain ratio of forage-concentrate (R). In that factor there was three treatmens, ration with ratio of forage-concentrate 60%:40 as the first treatment (R1), 50% :50% as the second treatment (R2), and 40%:60% as the third treatment (R3). The second factor was the time of feeding (W). There were two treatments in this factor, the time of feeding on day (at 06.00 am. up to 06.00 pm.) as the first treatment (W1) and on night (at 06.00 pm. up to 06.00 am.) as the second treatment (W2). The result indicated that there was no interaction (P>0.05) between ration with certain ratio of forage-concentrate and the time of feeding on feed consumption, average daily gain, and feed efficiency. The factor of ration with certain ratio of forage-concentrate affected (P<0.05) feed consumption, however didn?t affect (P>0.05) average daily gain and feed efficiency. Feed consumption of the rabbits that got treatment ration with ratio of forage-concentrate 40:60% (R3) was the lowest. The time of feeding didn?t affect (P>0.05) feed consumption, average daily gain, and feed efficiency. Keywords: Forage, concentrate, ration, rabbits

Abstract

ABSTRACT EFFECTS OF INCREASING CONCENTRATE RATIO IN THE RATION OF PERANAKAN ETTAWAH GOAT UNDER NATURAL HEAT  ENVIRONMENT ON FEED INTAKE, PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES, AND GROWTH. The research was conducted to study the effect of increasing the proportion of concentrate in the ration of Peranakan Ettawah (PE) goats. Animals were maintained in a natural hot environment on feed consumption, physiological responses, and body weight gain. The study used three male goats of PE in Latin Square design. Treatment applied was an increase in the proportion of concentrate in three forage-concentrate ratio (F:C), R1 = 85:15%; R2 = 70:30%; and R3 = 55:45%. The results showed that the treatment ratio of F:C had no effect (P> 0.05) in feed intake, respiration rate, rectal temperature, and body weight gain. In contrast, treatment affected significantly (P <0.05) heart rate, as follows R1 vs. R2 and R1 vs. R3, whereas R2 and R3 were not significantly different (P> 0.05).
