Abstract

Language teachers play an important roles on teaching and   learning   process,   choosing   the   methods,   and designing the goal of the study. All their targets are based on how well they collaborate the methods and designs through the experiences and knowledge they have during the  process   of  teaching  and   learning.   Audio-lingual method was chosen to know the effectiveness, advantages, disadvantages, strenghts, and weaknesses   in improving the speaking skill of the fifth grade students of elementary school. The qualitative and quantitative data were used in this research. Qualitative data were taken from the scores of the pre-test and all cycles. The quantitative data were taken through the observation, interview, and questionnaire. Based on the discussions and conclusions, audio-lingual method is recommended to improve the speaking skill of elementary students.Key words: audio-lingual method, speaking skill, teaching learning process

Abstract

The generator is the main component for a wind power plant.  The Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) is one of electric power plants types which has a horizontal axis. The plant is suitable to be operated in areas that have a fairly large wind speed. The low-speed HAWT generator can be designed using a permanent magnet.  This paper compares the coil design of the stator generator which has 12 poles arranged in 3 phases, and the rotor part consists of 24 Neodymium (NdFeB) type permanent magnets. Based on analytical studies, the design of generator windings is varied by 3 turns and 6 turns. The tests has been carried out for  100rpm - 1000rpm generator rotation. The research conclusions are recommendations to reduce 0.5 times the rotation and at 3 times the winding in obtaining optimal performance. DOI : https://doi.org/10.26905/jeemecs.v2i1.2718

Abstract

This article discusses Indonesian State Polytechnic students understanding and reasons towards silence and lack of oral participation in class. It is a qualitative case study conducted with two students from English study program. The authors conducted semi-structured interview and then analyzed the data using a constant comparisons method. Both students realize that they were one of the quietest students in the class. It is revealed that the causes of their silence are lack of speaking skills that related to their study program, shyness in the classroom and lack of background knowledge related with their fields. Their silence in classroom could not be interpreted as their unwillingness to contribute in class, rather than a process they should go through whenever they use English at class orally. Besides indicate the need to find a more suitable teaching approach to help students in class, this finding also suggest that teachers or lecturers need to understand the reason behind students’ silence better.

Abstract

Pronunciation plays an important role in communication. It provides the different meaning of English words when they are pronounced differently especially English diphthongs. Producing errors in pronouncing English diphthongs cause misunderstanding in communication. The research was aimed to know(1) the commonmispronounced diphthongs by the second semester of English Study Program’s students atintermediate speaking class and (2) the causation of errors in pronouncing English diphthongs. The mixed method research was used to get the data. The qualitative data were taken based on the observations, documentations, and interviews, meanwhile the quantitative data were taken based on the errors of the students on the tests. The results of the research were described by the percentages. The students commonly made diphthong errors as follows/uә/= 19.3%, /eә/= 21.3%, /ei/= 20%,/aʊ/= 13.10%, and/ɪә/= 26.2%.The errors happened in the classifications ofsubstitution = 46.9%, insertion = 13.8%, and omission = 39.3%. It happened because of the influence of inter-lingual and intra-lingual factors.
