Abstract

Research on the antibacterial potency of fresh extract from leaves of Jamaican cherry (Muntingia calabura L.) in inhibiting the growth of Shigella dysenteriae had been conducted in the Microbiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University. The study aimed to determine the potential of fresh extract fromĀ  Jamaican cherry leaves in inhibiting the growth of S. dysenteriae and to determine its Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) against S. dysenteriae. The results showed that the fresh extract of Jamaican cherry leaves was potent as an antimicrobial agent against pathogenic bacteria S. dysenteriae. It was shown through 12 - 14 mm diameter of inhibition zone which was classified as strong inhibition. The MIC was measured at 3.125% while MBC was undetermined. According to these findings, it can be concluded that the fresh extract from Jamaican cherry leaves was potent to inhibit the growth of S.dysentriae at 3.125% concentration, yet unable to kill it.

Abstract

The research on antimicrobial activity of skin secretion derived from Rana hosii (Anura: Ranidae) against several pathogenic microbes had been conducted at Microbiology Laboratory and at Genetics and Biomolecular Laboratory, both in the Biology Department, Universitas Andalas. The research used to survey and experimental methods. The study aimed to determine the effectivity of Rana hosii skin secretion to inhibit microbial activity, hence it tested onto some pathogenic microbes such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The results showed that the biggest inhibition zone formed against E. coli was 10.96 + 0.63 mm, on S. aureus was 11.74 + 1.00 mm, while on C. albicans was 7.42 + 0.80 mm. The results indicated that the skin secretions from Rana hosii frog could be a potential broad-spectrum antibacterial, and antifungal activity against C. albicans.

Abstract

The study used survey method and the data were analysed descriptively. The selection of the bacteria which produce antibiotic had been with paper disk method and used Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as the sample bacteria. This result showed pH 7,0 was succesful optimum pH antibiotic produced for Bacillus sp.1 and Bacillus sp.2. and 370C was the optimum temperature to antibiotic produced from Bacillus sp.1 and Bacillus sp.2.

Abstract

Research on the Antibacterial Potential of Actinomycetes Isolates from the Rhizosphere of imperata (Imperata cylindrica L.) Against Eschericia coli and Staphylococcus aureus has been conducted at the Biota Laboratory of Sumatera, Andalas University from July to September 2020. This study aims to obtain actinomycetes isolates from plant rhizosphere reeds (Imperata cylindrica L.) which has the potential as an antibacterial against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This study used a survey method. The results showed that 4 isolated actinomycetes were found, all of which have antibacterial potential, which could inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

Ziziphus spina-christi (L.) Desf. is a member of the Rhamnaceae family, which has efficacy values as herbal plants used in traditional medicines. The spread of infectious diseases in humans has increased in recent years, raising public awareness of the importance of using traditional medicine as the first line of prevention against infectious diseases. This research aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of fresh extract, infusion, and ethanol extract and to determine the greatest inhibition zone of Z. spina-christi leaves against Gram-positive bacteria (B. cereus, B. subtilis, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis). This research used the survey method with a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that fresh extract, infusion, and ethanol extract of the Z. spina-christi leaves had antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (B. cereus, B. subtilis, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis) and the greatest inhibition zone was obtained from the ethanol extract with a strong inhibition category.

Abstract

Koenih rimbo (Curcuma sumatrana Miq.) is a medicinal plant endemic to Sumatra from the Zingiberaceae family. Research on the antibacterial test of koenih rimbo rhizome extracts against Gram-positive bacteria has been conducted at the Basic Biology Laboratory, UPT. Basic and Central Laboratory, Chemical Laboratory of Natural Materials, UPT. Biological Resources, Andalas University,Padang. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of fresh extracts, infusions, and ethanol extracts and determine the largest inhibition zone of koenih rimbo rhizomes against several Gram-positive bacteria. The research used a survey method with a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that the fresh extract, infusa, and ethanol extract had antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, and B. cereus. The most significant inhibition zone was obtained from the extract with ethanol solvent with a strong inhibition category.
