Abstract

Agustiana et al, 2019. Performance of Oil Palm in Dry Sesason in South Sumatera: Effect of Water Deficit on Plant Phenology. pp. 67-73.South Sumatra has a Monsoon type of rainfall that is a clear difference between the rainy and the dry season. Rainfall distribution cause successive dry months resulting in a water deficit. Water deficit can affect the performance of oil palm. The purpose of this study was to determine the phenology response of the appearance of midribs, male and female flowers to the variability of the season in South Sumatra. This study used a completely randomized design with 2 genotypes is Nigeria 3 and Nigeria 4 with 2 replications so that there were 4 units of experimental plots, where each plot consisted of 12 palms. Based on the results of observations it is known that plants that experience stress due to water deficit are indicated by the number of spear leaves> 4, and decrease of female flowers.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how EFL students use social media to learn English. This exploratory study investigated the use of social media platforms for English language acquisition. The data were obtained through a survey and a semi-structured interview. Sixty-seven students responded to the questionnaire and ten students were purposively selected from the participants who responded to the questionnaire for an interview. Quantitative data from the questionnaire were analyzed using basic statistical methods, whilst interview data were evaluated using phenomenological case analysis and thematic coding. Students utilize numerous social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, according to the research. The findings indicate that students spent more time utilizing social media for non-academic objectives than for English study. However, they demonstrated a favorable attitude toward the use of social media in English language acquisition. Students believe social media has a significant influence in enhancing their English language skills. In addition, it encourages students to use social media to improve their English language skills. Keywords: ICT, social media, EFL classroom

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the implementation of the case-based method and its advantages and challenges in the EFL classroom. This research used case study design under qualitative research. The participants in this research were an English teacher and four students who were in the twelfth grade in senior high school. The instruments in this research were interview. Interview was used to investigate the implementation of the case-based method in the EFL classroom and to examine the advantages and challenges of the case-based method. The findings showed that teacher implemented case-based method in EFL classroom on discussion text learning by conducting a debate between two teams to conclude a case. The results of interview revealed that learning with case-based methods had several advantages, namely students' confidence, speaking skill, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. In addition, the method also had challenges that teachers and students go through. The teacher and students have the same perspective on the advantages and challenges in used case-based method. Therefore, the case-based method was indeed the right teaching method to be implemented in the classroom because there were several advantages that can improve students' abilities, despite the challenges that exist.
