Abstract

The Arab League since its establishment in 1945 has failed to play a significant role in minimizing conflicts in the region. In some contemporary conflicts (Syria and Yemen), it is the the powerful countries of the League that became the main actors in the conflict. This raises the question, what is the reason behind this failure, especially political-economic reasons. Using the literature review, this paper finds that there are two factors contributing to the failure, namely economic interdependence between rich Arab countries and the United States, and secondly, a strong relationship between the United States and Israel. The later becomes the reason why the US takes advantage of its economic hegemony to defend the interests of Israel.

Abstract

The Global War on Terrorism has continued 17 years since 2001 but has not made the world safer. Terrorist acts continue to occur in various countries, even new terrorist groups have emerged, including IS (Islamic State). US presidents from the George W. Bush to Trump continue to declare terrorism as a threat for national security and world security. This article discussed this phenomenon using securitization theory to answer the question of whether terrorism really threatens US security or is there other factors behind the continuity of GWOT policy? The study found that although acts of terrorism did caused many victims, the casualties of GWOT are much greater. The US goal in launching GWOT is to frighten the world (using the ‘politics of fear’) so that countries are willing to join GWOT's military operations. This war is very profitable for the US military industry and escalate US domination in the world.

Abstract

The Syrian war that started in 2012 involves the global distribution of weapons to armed militias or non-state actors (NSAs) with enormous capital value. Meanwhile, the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) entered into force on December 24, 2014. It restricts the weapons-producing countries to export weapons to NSAs known to commit genocide and direct attacks on civilians. In this article the authors will answer two main questions, firstly, how is the NSA profile in the Syrian conflict and who are the sources of their armory; and secondly, how is the impact of ATT implementation on weapons proliferation. The method used in this research is qualitative text analysis, i.e. reviewing the research documents that have been done before, the documents of ATT, and mass media coverages. The finding of this research is that ATT is not effective in preventing supply of weaponry into the hands of the NSA and it caused the continuing war of Syria.
