Abstract

The analytical method development on an anionic surfactant of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) in a catfish using spectrophotometer UV-Vis using acridine orange (AO) has been conducted. This research aims to determine the optimum conditions of analysis and to determine validation parameters of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) analysis in a catfish. This study was divided into two steps, isolation of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in the catfish with soxhlet extraction and the analysis of SDBS. The analysis of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) is based on the formation of ion pair between dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) and acridine orange (AO). The results showed that the analysis can be performed at 499 nm, using ethanol as acridine orange (AO) solvent, the mole ratio of dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) acridine orange (AO) 2:1, and pH 2.97. The parameters of validation had good acceptability as linearity (r) 0.998, limit of detection 0.0343 mg/L   and limit of quantification 0.104 mg/L, precision 0.382 - 1.78 %, sensitivity 4.64 x 104 L mol-1cm-1, and accuracy (82.11 - 100.3 %).

Abstract

Experiment is integral part of chemistry. Through experiments, everyone can verify and or find something new as an alternative solution to attract interest in meaningful chemistry learning. Innovative experimental packaging can be done with Small Scale Chemistry (SSC) to establish the importance of understanding and application related to the use of small amounts of reagents and reduce waste produced during chemistry practicum. This study aims to explore and analyze the science process skills of the second semester students of Chemistry Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University, which focused for chemistry grade 12 in water electrolysis using straws and mini test tubes as physical chemistry’s experiment and formation reaction of silver mirror uses vial bottle and mirror media as experiment of organic chemistry. The results show that students’ science process skills which includes observation skills with good average score, prediction skills with good enough average score, skills in interpreting data with good average scores, and communication skills with good average score for two kind of experiments conducted. In general, students were enthusiastic in carrying out the two SSC experiments. The students also evaluate the experiments to be able to help develop and improve their soft skills in chemistry learning. Abstract

The research for accumulation determination and monitoring of Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate (SDBS) contamination in freshwater fish has been conducted. The aims of this research were to determine the interference of protein and ions in analysis, the parameters of validation, the correlation of SDBS concentration in the basin and SDBS accumulation in catfish followed by SDBS analysis in freshwater fish that sold in market in the area of Yogyakarta city. This research was started by isolating SDBS from freshwater fish using soxhlet extraction method and then followed by analysis of SDBS using spectrophotometer UV-Vis with acridine orange (AO) reagent. The results showed that the presence of proteins might be interferre the analysis process, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions might interfere the analysis process at concentrations 12 mg/L and 6 mg/L. Analytical method validation was performed and showed correlation coefficient values (r) was 0,9981, limit of detection was 0,089 mg/L, limit of quantification was 0,0296 mg/L, RSD 2% and % recovery between 83-107%. The content of the SDBS in fish increased with increasing concentrations of SDBS in water and caused the decrease of Bio-concentration Factor (BCF) value. The concentration of SDBS in the analysis of fish in the market were between 0,0012-0,0029 mg/g, 0,0038-0,0077 mg/g and 0.0008-0,0026 mg/g for catfish, red tilapia and carp, respectively.

Abstract

Learning cell biology in science subject is a challenging for elementary students in Indonesia. Not only it is implicitly taught in the science subject, but it also needs an intangible imagination to understand the cell’s organelles and their function. Therefore, a recreating method to explain about the cells the cell’s organelles and their function. In our program, the 5th and 6th of elementary students were explained about cells, organelles and their function in the first week class. Thus, they also were taught to observe cells under light microscope. Moreover, we developed the cells model by creating it from the edible materials such as cake, candies, messes, and biscuits; followed by fun game. While the cognitive ability of the students was evaluated with pre-and post-test. Our method increased the level of understanding of the students to learn cell biology. However, the standard deviation of student cognitive ability was highly varied in both classes.

Abstract

Indonesia has more than ten thousand islands, making it an archipelago; therefore, the distribution of learning media and facilities over the country is difficult. This condition may affect the learning material delivery and the student's understanding. Thus, the do-it-yourself (DIY) learning media helps to overcome this condition. We investigated the usefulness of applying appropriate technology through the 3D printing technique to fabricate learning media inspired by local wisdom to meet the needs of learning media. The students were guided by a project-based learning (PjBL) method to find the problem, design their learning media, fabricate it using a 3D printer, and expected to be applied to deliver the teaching material in the class. This study aimed to observe the implementation of the designing process based on theory to reality. A qualitative method and questionnaire were used to measure student's responses. We found that PjBL learning based on a 3D printing project increases students' motivation through creativity and effectiveness in delivering the teaching materials. Furthermore, 3D printed-based learning media can easily be fabricated, producing less waste.

Abstract

The practicum management of chemistry teachers at senior high school on the topic of acid-base is quite good, although the majority are monotonous in testing acid-base properties using large amounts of solution. Some schools only limit the practical use of extracts from various flowers with certain color pigments, then tested on several samples and used as natural indicators, but have not paid attention to the number of reagents and estimated waste generated. The purpose of this activity is to improve the quality of classical practicum and the attractiveness of acid-base indicators from materials that refer to the principles of green chemistry. Service activities are carried out in training through the practicum method of making acid-base indicators using purple cabbage extract, sodium alginate, and 1% CaCl2 solution. This training provides a new and innovative description of the formation of purple cabbage extract gel as an acid-base indicator in the form of red balls under acidic conditions and green under alkaline conditions. Chemistry teachers were very happy and felt that this practicum was simple and interesting to be packaged and brought to the routine practicum conducted at schools.

Abstract

Practicum is an activity that cannot be separated from chemical learning. Chemistry learning can be more meaningful through attractive practicum activities. One obstacle that arises in the implementation of the practicum is the availability of adequate practicum materials and tools. Small-scale chemistry practicum can overcome this obstacle, which is in the form of the use of materials that are environmentally friendly and available in the surrounding environment, as well as simple practicum tools that can be used. One of the small-scale chemistry practicums trained is the water electrolysis practicum. Simple practicum using sodium sulfate and water, able to explain the electrolysis of water well. Through this small-scale chemistry practicum training, teachers are expected to have the skills to carry out simple practicums and develop other practicum topics while still paying attention to the scientific field. Through this small-scale-based chemical practicum training, there is an increase in the mastery of the concept shown by an increase in the average score from 30.67 to 73.33. The teachers give a positive response regarding the implementation of this training activity.
