Abstract

The problem statement of this research was whether there was a correlation between reading habits and students' reading comprehension skills in learning English as a foreign language. The method of the research used a quantitative approach by using a correlational design. Based on R-value (0.588), the correlation between reading habits and students’ reading comprehension skills was moderate, and the linear regression model was Y = -6.758 + 0.605X. Based on the model, it is stated that there was a positive correlation between reading habits and reading comprehension skills in learning English. It was concluded that reading habits and reading comprehension skills had a proportional relationship.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate See subtype verbs in English and Wolio languages: the meanings and grammatical properties. The research is descriptive qualitative research. The sources of the data in this research include events, information, and documents. The techniques of collecting data are observation and interview. The data were analyzed through some steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion and verification. The result shows that the English See subtype verbs identified are see, hear, smell, taste, feel, observe, notice and perceive. While the Wolio See subtype verbs identified are kamata, rango, bou, penami, namisi, and tuminda. In the aspect of meaning, the Wolio See subtype verbs do not always have the same function with English in the use. Some verbs in Wolio language have more wide semantic range, such as ‘kamata’ and ‘namisi’. ‘Kamata’ refers to become aware of somebody/something by using of eyes either in a glance or over period of time and carefully or not. In addition, ‘kamata’ also can be used to see a movie, witness the accident, and observed somebody or something. ‘namisi’ also can cover feel and perceive. Though it is a transitive and intransitive verb at once, but the passive sentence of this verb is not allowed. In addition, this verb also does not have the imperative form when it refers to ‘perceive’. Contrast with ‘tumindaea’ that has more narrow semantic meaning. ‘tumindaea’ is just used to pay attention or notice somebody or his/her speech or advice.

Abstract

The problem statements of this research were: 1) what effect did the instructional design and delivery of English course to the student satisfaction?; 2) what impact did lecturer roles have on the student satisfaction, including feedback and assessment?; 3) what student duties and responsibilities were critical for a pleasant online class experience?; and 4) how effective were the management and support systems at delivering services when they are required? The method of the research used a quantitative approach by using survey method. The results of the research were: 1) the effects of the instructional design and delivery of English course to the student satisfaction were during English online class, the students were given chances to use materials from various sources and to interact each other virtually; 2) the impacts of lecturer roles had on the student satisfaction, including feedback and assessment were important, especially by providing various contents and sources of materials, help students in overcoming learning problems, feedback and assessment; 3) student duties and responsibilities were important, including motivation and interaction in joining English online class; and 4) the management and support systems were generally effective at delivering services when they were required.

Abstract

English textbook from government is issued for all the Indonesian students in junior high school. It should be used as the primary teaching material in English class. In fact, the English teachers in SMPN 4 Baubau meet some difficulties in applying that policy. The objective of this research was to find out the perception of English teachers related to textbook provided by government as a primary teaching material. This research used descriptive qualitative method with design case study. The sample of this research was three English teachers in SMPN4 Baubau. The findings showed the teachers did not use the government’s textbook as the primary but it was employed as the supporting teaching material and the teachers used other books from non-government publishers as the main textbook.

Abstract

Students’ reading habit and lecturers’ teaching in a classroom have a role to raise students’ achievement forbeing an important part of successful teaching and learning process. The aims of the research were toobserve 1) the lecturers’ teaching styles in teaching Extensive Reading class, 2) the students’ reading habit,and 3) the correlation between lecturers’ teaching style and students’ reading habit in readingcomprehension. The research employed a correlational research. Data sources were obtained from readinghabit questionnaire distributed to the students, teaching style survey based on Grasha-Riechmann to thelecturers, and TOEFL in reading test section to the students. The research indicated that 1) Lecturer 1 (D1)had moderate category as Expert and Facilitator, but high category for Formal Authority, Personal Model,and Delegator. Lecturer 2 (D2) had high category as Expert, Formal Authority, Personal Model, andDelegator, but moderate category for Facilitator. Lecturer 3 (D3) had high scores for five categories (Expert,Formal Authority, Personal Model, Facilitator, and Delegator), 2) the students’ reading habit category werefair, and 3) the lecturers’ teaching style was inversely correlated to reading comprehension. Reading habithad a proportionate relationship to reading comprehension. R value (0.661) indicated correlation betweenlecturers’ teaching style and students’ reading habit on reading comprehension is strong. Readingcomprehension skill should not be only observed from students’ reading habit, but also lecturers’ teachingstyle, for the success of learning and teaching in classroom.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the level of students reading anxiety and students reading comprehension. Data collection in this research was carried out using a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire EFL Reading Anxiety Inventory (EFLRAI) consisting 23 items and test to determine the level of students reading anxiety and 30 items of reading comprehension test. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. Based on the result of the research, it was conclude that students’ reading anxiety was in the high category with the mean score 2.72 means in the high anxiety. Sequentially top-down reading anxiety with the mean score 2.77, bottom-up reading anxiety with the mean score 2.74 and classroom reading anxiety with the mean score 2.29. While reading comprehension the mean score 2.72 implies that the students’ reading comprehension is in the poor category.

Abstract

Abstract    This study aims to investigate the level of students' anxiety and determine the teacher's strategies for reducing students' anxiety levels. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety level Scale (FLCAS) and semi-structured interviews were used to determine the students' anxiety levels and teachers' strategies for reducing the students' anxiety. The result showed that students’ anxiety was at the middle anxiety level, with a mean score of 108.61. Therefore, teachers should employ various strategies, namely establishing a secure environment, speaking English effortlessly, and creating pair and group work. The number of strategies enhances opportunities for students to speak the target language in class and fosters a safe learning atmosphere where students may express themselves freely.

Abstract

The problem in this research was whether there was a significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the application of short animation video? The objective of the research was to determine the effectiveness of using short animation video on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research uses a pre-experimental method. The subject of the research consisted of 26 students of class VII at SMPN 7 Baubau. This research was one group pretest-posttest. The procedure of the research consisted of three steps. They were pretest, treatment, and posttest. The data was collected by using the test which was analyzed by quantitative analysis. The research outcome indicated that: 1) the mean value of the pretest was 44.12 and the mean score of the posttest was 68.85. 2) from the hypothesis result by using the t-test, obtained tcount was 4.564, and the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 smaller than 0.05, so that, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. it meant that there was a significant difference on students' vocabulary mastery before and after the application of the short animation video. Therefore, teaching vocabulary in SMPN 7 Baubau by using short animation video was effective.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk memberikan pemahaman kepada guru SMK Negeri 3 Baubau untuk melakukan analisis data berupa 1) Kualitas instrumen (Tes), baik aspek teoretis, terutama aspek empirisnya, 2) proses pengukuran, dan 3) Pelaporan hasil Ujian yang saling terkoneksi. Metode yang digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan ini adalah melaksanakan sosialisasi penggunaan aplikasi AnNASH21 berbasis excell. Pada akhir pelaksanaan sosialisasi, peserta diberi kesempatan untuk mengisi angket respon terhadap aplikasi AnNASH21 ini. Angket respon ini berisi 25 butir pernyataan yang meliputi aspek (1) kelayakan isi (2) kebahasaan, (3) sajian, dan (4) manfaat. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan menentukan pengukuran item yang terdiri dari lima alternatif jawaban, yang memiliki gradasi  positif atau negative. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah: pada aspek kelayakan isi, 91,5 % peserta menyatakan bahwa aplikasi ini sangat layak dan layak untuk digunakan. Pada aspek kebahasaan, 88,6 % peserta menyatakan bahwa bahasa yang digunakan dalam penyusunan aplikasi sangat baik dan baik. Pada aspek sajian, 84,3 % peserta sosialisasi menyatakan sangat layak dan layak, sehingga disimpulkan bahwa aplikasi ini menyajikan sesuatu yang menarik dalam melakukan melaksanakan analisis naskah soal. Pada aspek manfaat, 100 % peserta sosialisasi menyatakan bahwa aplikasi isi sangat bermanfaat dalam melaksanakan analisis naskah soal.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk memberikan pemahaman kepada guru SMA Negeri 4 Baubau untuk melakukan administrasi pembelajaran terpadu yang memuat unsur perencanaan, pelaksanaan dan penilaian pembelajaran yang saling terkoneksi. Metode yang digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan ini adalah melaksanakan sosialisasi penggunaan aplikasi Program Pembelajaran Terpadu (PPT) berbasis excell untuk memudahkan guru dalam melakukan administrasi pembelajaran. Pada akhir pelaksanaan sosialisasi, peserta diberi kesempatan untuk mengisi angket respon terhadap aplikasi administrasi pembelajaran ini. Angket respon ini berisi 25 butir pernyataan yang meliputi aspek (1) kelayakan isi (2) kebahasaan, (3) sajian, dan (4) manfaat. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan menentukan pengukuran item yang terdiri dari lima alternatif jawaban, yang memiliki gradasi  positif atau negative. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah: pada aspek kelayakan isi, 93 % peserta menyatakan bahwa aplikasi ini layak dan sangat layak untuk digunakan. Pada aspek kebahasaan, 90 % peserta menyatakan bahasa yang digunakan dalam penyusunan aplikasi tergolong baik dan sangat baik. Pada aspek sajian, 93 % peserta sosialisasi menyatakan bahwa aplikasi ini menyajikan sesuatu yang layak dan sangat layak dalam melakukan administrasi pembelajaran. Pada aspek manfaat, 100 % peserta sosialisasi menyatakan setuju dan sangat setuju, sehingga disimpulkan bahwa aplikasi ini bermanfaat dan sangat bermanfaat dalam mengadminstrasikan pembelajaran.
