Abstract

This research intended to analyze factors of students’ lack of self confidence in speaking English. It was also aimed to present possible strategies used to overcome students’ lack of self confidence in speaking English. The type of this research was qualitative. This research was conducted in SMA Negeri 4 BauBau. This research focused on obtaining data from the English teacher and students at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 4 BauBau in the academic year 2018/2019 as the subjects of the research. In collecting data, the researchers used observation, interview. The technique used in analyzing data were three steps, those were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that the factors which cause students’ lack of self confidence were anxiety, shyness, fear of making mistakes, and lack of vocabulary. Meanwhile, the possible strtaegies to overcome students’ lack of self confidence in speaking English were lowering students’ anxiety in classroom, improving students’ vocabulary, boosting students’ self-confidence, and forming group discussion.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of reading attitude toward students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau. This research used a quantitative approach by applying ex-post facto method of causal comparative design. The population of this research was all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau with the number was 320 students. The sample of this research was 30 students who were selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and test. The study results showed that the R score was 0.436 categorized in the moderate category. This means that a positive and moderate correlation existed between the reading attitude and the reading understanding of students. Besides, the score of Fcount was 6.559 with the significant value was 0.016. Because the score Fcount was greater than Ftable (4.18) and the score of significance was lower than α (0.05), it meant that null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. So, based on the finding of research and data analysis, it could be concluded that there was significant influence between reading attitude and students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau.

Abstract

Problem in this research was whether the use of traditional game Kabente has a significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. While the objective of this research was to know the significance effect of traditional game Kabente n students ocabularymastery at grade VII A SMP Negeri 1 Siompu Barat. This research was pre experimental research. The population of the research were all grade II students of SMPNegeri 1 Siompu Barat which consisted of 3 classes with total 79 students. Sample in this research was taken with random sampling technique. Sample of the research was class VII A consisted of 25 students. Instrument which used in this research was test. Research outcome obtained showed that the mean score in pre-test was 36.36, while in post-test was 80.06. From hypotehis test result by using t test, obtained tcount = 2.54 and obtained significant value 0.00<0.050. therefore, it could be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Therefore, the application of traditional game Kabente had significant effect on students vocabulary mastery at grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Siompu Barat, academic year 2020/2021.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the level of students reading anxiety and students reading comprehension. Data collection in this research was carried out using a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire EFL Reading Anxiety Inventory (EFLRAI) consisting 23 items and test to determine the level of students reading anxiety and 30 items of reading comprehension test. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. Based on the result of the research, it was conclude that students’ reading anxiety was in the high category with the mean score 2.72 means in the high anxiety. Sequentially top-down reading anxiety with the mean score 2.77, bottom-up reading anxiety with the mean score 2.74 and classroom reading anxiety with the mean score 2.29. While reading comprehension the mean score 2.72 implies that the students’ reading comprehension is in the poor category.

Abstract

Abstract    This study aims to investigate the level of students' anxiety and determine the teacher's strategies for reducing students' anxiety levels. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety level Scale (FLCAS) and semi-structured interviews were used to determine the students' anxiety levels and teachers' strategies for reducing the students' anxiety. The result showed that students’ anxiety was at the middle anxiety level, with a mean score of 108.61. Therefore, teachers should employ various strategies, namely establishing a secure environment, speaking English effortlessly, and creating pair and group work. The number of strategies enhances opportunities for students to speak the target language in class and fosters a safe learning atmosphere where students may express themselves freely.

Abstract

Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah bagai mana strategi guru mengatasi kesulitan siswa dalam belajar membaca di SMP SATAP Negeri 4 Kulisusu Barat? Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui strategi guru dalam mengatasi kesulitan siswa dalam belajar membaca di SMP SATAP Negeri 4 Kulisusu Barat. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 1 orang guru bahasa inggris dan 30 siswa kelas VIII SMP SATAP Negeri 4 Kulisusu Barat. Teknik pengumpulan data adalah wawancara dan tes. Data dianalisis menggunakan tiga langkah yang diadopsi dari Miles dan Huberman: reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa siswa SMP SATAP Negeri 4 Kulisusu Baratmengalami kesulitan dalam pembelajaran membaca. Terlihat bahwa kesulitan siswa yang dominan adalah dalam membuat inferensi dan menentukan rinci. Presentase siswa yang memperoleh nilai baik dalam membuat inferensi adalah 7%, rendah 13%, dan sangat rendah 80%. Sedangkan dalam menentukan inferensi rinci terdapat 7% siswa yang memperoleh nilai baik, dan 93% siswa mendapatkan nilai sangat rendah. Untuk mengatasi kesulitan siswa, guru menggunakan strategi pelatihan siswa, strategi hubungan tanya jawab (QARS), strategi menghafal, dan metode penugasan menerjemah suatu bacaan berkelompok dalam pembelajaran membaca.

Abstract

The problem in this study was how were the students’ attitude in learning English at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Gu? This study aimed at determining and identifying students’ attitude in learning English in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Gu. The design of this study was a descriptive qualitative. Subjects of the research were fifteen students of eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 2 Gu. Techniquies of data collection in this study were questionnaire and interviw. Techniques of data analysis used were data reduction, data display and conclusion. The result showed thwt te students had positive attitude in learning English, which consisted of aspect of cognitive attitude, aspect of affective attitude and aspect of behavior attitude. In all aspects students’ attitude were in the good category. Based on three aspects of attitudes, the most dominant aspect of attitude was the affective attitude aspect.

Abstract

Penulisan karya ilmiah memerlukan sitasi atau kutipan. Salah satu aplikasi yang dengan mudah digunakan dalam membuat kutipan tersebut adalah dengan referensi manajer Mendeley. Dengan tidak menggunakan referensi manajer pada pengutipan, ada kemungkinan plagiasi, yang merupakan salah satu faktor yang menentukan kualitas karya tulis. Beberapa aplikasi seperti Mendeley dapat digunakan untuk mengelola referensi dari buku dan jurnal. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa peserta lebih memahami dan dapat membuat kutipan dengan Mendeley baik sebelum maupun sesudah pelatihan. Namun, beberapa peserta belum menguasai sepenuhnya cara menginstal aplikasi di laptop dan Ms. Word serta membuat daftar pustaka dengan Mendeley, sehingga mereka perlu dibantu dan diarahkan sampai pelatihan selesai.

Abstract

Problem statement that is answered in this research is what is the teaching style the English teacher use in teaching English at the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Baubau. The objective of this research was to find out the teaching style the English teacher use in teaching English at the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Baubau. The research used a quantitative approach with applying the descriptive method. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Baubau who registered in the school year of 2022/2023 in odd semester. In taking sample of the population, the researcher used cluster sampling technique by taking 60 students to be the sample of this research. Instrument that was used in this research will be a teacher style questionnaire. Technique of data analysis that was applied in this research is a descriptive statistics. Based on the finding of the research and the data analysis, it was found that the mean score of expert style was 2.9 which achieves high category, the mean score of formal authority style was 2.7 which achieves moderate category, the mean score of personal model style was 2.5 which achieves moderate category, the mean score of facilitator style was 2.9 which achieves high category, and the mean score of delegator style was 2.8 which achieves moderate category. From those results, it could be concluded that the most teaching styles used by the English teacher at grade eight at SMP Negeri 7 Baubau were the expert style and the facilitator style.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to identify the most common types of code mixing employed by the teacher at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau, as well as the justifications for doing so. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach. One of the English teachers at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau was the subject. Interviews and observation were used as the data collection methods. Data reduction, data visualization, and conclusion drawing/data verification were the three data analysis techniques used in this study. Based on the results of this study, the teacher at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau employed insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization as three different methods of code mixing. The most common type of code mixing used was alternation. The results of the interview session revealed that the instructor at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau mixed codes when teaching English in the classroom because of the students' poor English proficiency and habit. It made it simpler for students to comprehend the lessons that the teacher was conveying or explaining by using code mixing when teaching English.
