Abstract

For design of marine propeller, the energy supply from marine engine to the propeller should be converted to thrust force with minimum losses. Furthermore, the unwanted vibration and cavitation due to the overlooking a detail calculation of the propeller should be prohibited for increasing the fuel efficiency and life-span of the propeller. In the last few decades, most of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) focusing their work on ship component industry in Central Java Province Indonesia provide the marine propeller to the ship manufacturer and ship repairmen in some shipyards in northern part of Central Java port. The design of the propeller is never been observed and optimized. The aim of the present work is to redesign the installed propeller on a wooden fishing boat with the new optimized design using B-Series propeller theory approach. The reverse engineering method uses three-dimensional scanner to obtain the geometrical data of the installed ship propeller. The new optimized propeller design is obtained from free software calculation based on the boat and engine specification. The comparison shows that the new optimized propeller design has a wider blade and larger pitch and increases 20% of the open water efficiency of the propeller performance at lower engine rotation. Keywords: B-series design, fishing boat, marine propeller, redesign, optimization

Abstract

Abstract

Optimization of CNC wet milling cutting parameters for stainless steel AISI 304 was successfully attempted by using Taguchi method (S/N ratio and ANOVA). L9 orthogonal array is utilized for designing the experiments with 3 levels of spindle speeds and feed rates with an increment depth of cut. The effect of cutting parameters on surface roughness was examined. According to S/N ratio’s response table, the result obtained for spindle speed fervently indicates that spindle speed is the most pivotal factor for impacting the surface roughness than feed rate for stainless steel AISI 304. ANOVA results depicted that the contribution percentage of spindle speed for surface roughness is higher than feed. Optimum values of cutting parameters were endowed at a spindle speed of 3184 rpm and a feed rate of 1528,4 mm/min. The experimental values at optimum cutting condition were compared with predicted values and it reveals a significant congruity with the experimental results with a low error percentage. Therefore, this experiment aims to develop the productivity and quality of CNC milling operations for stainless steel AISI 304. In addition, number of studies for cutting parameter optimization stainless steel AISI 304 was not barely done yet. Hereafter, more investigations still needed to optimize the cutting parameters of this stainless steel AISI 304 for various machining operations specifically on CNC milling process.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The technique of bones saw was used by many traders still uses the conventional method, namely with a butcher knife. To make cutting more efficient, bone saw machines are created which are widely marketed. However, the use of these tools is considered inefficient because during operation the meat attached to the bones will move into the machine through the cutting tool so that the motor work becomes heavy and even the cutting tools are prone to breaking, then the electrical power required is large enough to make traders use more conventional methods. This manufacturing technique aims to produce designs and working drawings of meat bone cutting machines and the components needed. Bone cutting machines are designed to be used by various groups of bone traders, market traders or home-based traders to increase production and use low electrical power. The machine was designed to be more efficient than the previous by modifying the cutting tool using a saw type, namely a chainsaw with a low electrical power of 550 Watt or equivalent to 0.75 HP and a blade speed of 2500 rpm. The machine was designed to use a spring to raise the machine automatically. The dimension of 800 mm × 700 mm × 1415 mm has double safety that is protected by a cover and a lever to provide distance between the machine and the operator.

Abstract

Austenitic stainless steel (SS) is widely used in various industries owing to its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, the machineability of this material remains a challenge to measure for better application. In this research, the optimization of the machining parameter CNC wet milling process for austenitic stainless steels (AISI 304 and AISI 316) was successfully finished by utilizing the Taguchi method (S/N ratio and ANOVA) to determine its machineability specifically on surface roughness. The optimum surface roughness of AISI 304 stainless steel is about 0,21 µm within a spindle speed of 3184 rpm, a feed rate of 1528,4 mm/min in the depth of 0,3 mm. The depth of cut parameter during CNC milling was considered as the most influential parameter to optimize surface roughness in AISI 304 stainless steel. Meanwhile, during the cutting process of AISI 316 stainless steel, the optimum surface roughness was obtained at a spindle speed of 3184 rpm, feed rate of 541,4 mm/min in the depth of 0,3 mm with a surface roughness value of 0,24 µm. The results depicted that feed rate held a pivotal factor in determining surface roughness in the AISI 316 stainless steel milling process. Therefore, this research gives impactful insight into developing a good milling process that can increase the machineability, quality, and productivity of AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steels.
