Abstract

Language has a very important role in a tourist destination. This paper discusses morphological process of place-naming of tourism destination in West Java. West Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia that has many tourism destination. Also it has many hidden gem tourism destination that are not widely known by foreigner. The names of tourism destination in West Java have different morphological processes. The method used in this research paper is using qualitative research with descriptive approach. The purpose of this paper are Identifying kinds of morphological process and identifying the most effective process used in place-naming of tourism destination in West Java. The result demonstrated that there are found four types of morphological process in place naming tourism destination in West Java,  namely acronym (29%) compounding (43%) blending (14%) and borrowing (14%).

Abstract

This research intends to investigate and analyze the semantic roles used in Emma Watson's speech, as well as their significance. The study was conducted using a descripttive qualitative research methodology. The information was derived from Emma Watson's speech at the HeForShe script at the United Nations. From the studies there are only found six types of semantic roles which are agent (39%), experiencer (16%), goal (7%), source (16%), theme (20%), and location (2%). In addition to identifying the semantic role, the researcher also identified the meaning contained in the speech. Kinds of meaning that we can found in this research are only four types, there are conceptual meaning (86%), connotative meaning (6%), affective meaning (6%), and reflected meaning (2%). The types of semantic roles were analyzed by identifying each sentence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and examine closely the form and the function of Avengers: Endgame (2019) movie. The purpose of the research was to describe the forms and functions of the movie Avengers: Endgame (2019). Jargon is a special vocabulary used in every area of life, skill, and environment.  A descriptive analysis method was used to carry out the research. The data used were taken from the Avengers: Endgame (2019) movie and the transcript from wiki. The results demonstrated that there are four forms of jargon, namely phrase (43.86%), word (35.09%), acronym (15.79%), and abbreviation (5.26%). Besides, there are three functions of jargon, 1) jargon gives a people a sense of belonging to a specific group of avengers, 2) jargon can also make it easier for a person to communicate with their friends/ groups of avengers, 3) jargon as effective signals for identification of communication with avengers.

Abstract

This study focuses on the conversational implicature in Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 1. It aims to analyze the types of conversational implicature and the reasons why the implicature occur spoken by the casts in the movie series. There are two types of conversational implicature in the movie series. Particularized conversational implicature and generalized conversational implicature. This research used descriptive qualitative method and obtained 9 particularized conversational implicature, and 22 generalized conversational implicature. The result of the research showed that in particularized implicature there are violations against maxim of relation (11.1%), maxim of manner (33,3%), maxim of quality (11.1%), and maxim of quantity (44.4%). Meanwhile, in generalized implicature, there are indefinite implicature (54.5%) and scalar implicature (36.3%). In addition, the reasons of conversational implicature are found, those are teasing, refusing, hurting, apologizing, convincing, wishing, caring, showing arrogance, disappointment and anger, reminding, informing, guessing, and self-defending.

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to analyze and investigate the speech styles are used by Kelly as the host of Kelly Clarkson Show to her younger and older guests and the factors that cause Kelly as the host of the Kelly Clarkson Show to use different speech styles to her younger and older guests. In this study, the descriptive qualitative analysis approach was used. Two Kelly Clarkson Show videos were used to gather the data. The results showed three types of speech styles used in the Kelly Clarkson Show with her younger guest: casual style (21%), formal style (21%), and intimate style (5%). As opposed to that, there are same three types of speech styles used in the Kelly Clarkson Show with her older guest with different percentages: casual style (26%), formal style (16%), and intimate style (11%). This study has the highest percentage of the sort of casual style, it can be said.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to identify grammaticaly errors in movie titles and to find out linguistics elements that are put together to form constituents (such as phrases or clauses) and analyze the process of drawing meaning from the text. This study was carried out by qualitative descriptive method and content analysis approach. Since the content is in the form of a written document containing transcripts of several movies titles, it is categorised as documentation. The titles of the movies researched are several movies from various genres and various years of release. The theories used in this research are James (1998) about grammatical errors, Purnomoadjie and Mulyadi (2019) about syntactical analysis and Gada (2020) linguistics competence and error analysis. From the results of the analysis, it was found that types of grammatical errors are divided into five types; general grammatical errors, substance errors, lexical errors, syntactic errors and semantic errors. From 30 data analyzed previously, there are only three categories of grammatical error found. The first is general grammatical errors by the 57% of data, while semantic errors 31%, and substance error has 12%. There are no data for lexical and syntactic error in movie titles. The types of grammatical errors found in the movies is commonly general grammatical errors; thus, it can be concluded that the titles of the movies have commonly grammatical errors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze politeness strategies and also the factors that exist in the film from America "Me Before You". This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, the reason the researcher chooses this method is because the researcher wants to describe the situation that will be observed in the field more specifically, transparently, and in-depth. The film me before you is the source of the research data carried out. The data was studied using the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987). Based on the research findings and results, there are four politeness strategies applied in the film, namely positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies, bald on-record strategies, and off-record strategies (indirect). The film In Me Before You uses a lot of positive politeness strategies, usually, the difference in the realization of politeness strategies used in films is influenced by several factors, namely the genre of the film, the age of the characters, and the closeness between the characters. after analyzing this film, the researcher got 120 data on politeness strategies, positive politeness 79 data, negative politeness 20 data, bald on-record 16 data, and off-record 5 data. So from these data, the researcher can conclude that the data is divided into 66% positive politeness, 17% negative politeness strategy, 13% bald on-record strategy, and 4% off-record strategy.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze and examine the types of ambiguity in the branch of linguistics, and semantics in the movie “Titanic” by James Cameron and also examine the meaning of that word or sentence that makes it ambigous. The method is used in this analysis is the quantitative analysis method. The data was used taken from some journals, books, and from the movie “Titanic” which was released in 1997. Ambiguity and vagueness could be viewed as opposite ends of a continuum, with polysemy in the middle, according to the Cognitive Grammar framework (Langacker 1987). The results demonstrated that there are two types of meaning found, namely Lexical Ambiguity (65%) and Syntactic Ambiguity (35%). The data was obtained from the results of processing data and reading several sources of existing journals.

Abstract

The subject of this study is a reference found in Jose Marichan's song "Beautiful girl." The study's goals are to identify the function of reference, find the different types of referencing expressions in the lyrics and to explain how they are used. This study is based on descriptive data. Jose Marichan's song "Beautiful girl" was used as a data source for this study. The researcher discovered pronouns, proper names, definite noun phrase and indefinite noun phrase while collecting information. The researcher next analyzes the data and explains why it is classified as satisfying referring expression. According to the findings indefinite noun phrase with two data (13%), pronoun with twelve data (80%), and definite noun phrase with one data (7%), the function of reference is to allow the listener or reader to identify something, while referring expression is to identify the types.

Abstract

This purpose of this study is to analyze and investigate the function and the various types of Grammatical Cohesion in the novel This Christmas by Nora Roberts. The research discusses about written text (novel) which more easily to be observed. A discourse is the unit of language formed from a series of sentences that are cohesive and coherent either written or speech. This research also observed the function and what types of grammatical cohesion in This Chirstmas novel. In grammatical cohesion there are four types such as subtitution, ellipsis, reference and conjunction. Result of the research are 10 references detected in the novel (34.4%), 6 subtitution found in the text (21%), 3 ellipsis (10,2%) and 10 conjunctions (34,4%).
