Abstract

Abstract: Globalization affects almost everything, moreover international politics. In this respect, media that have transnational orientation, as serious patrons of globalization, keep transforming international politics in three dimensions which are from power politics to image politics, international politics mediation and the widespread utilization of media as propaganda.

Abstract

Different from the advocates of neoliberalism, this article argues that economic globalization not only fails to create prosperity but also fails to build democratic political system. Globalisation has brought profound change on the role of multinational corporations. Rather than brought equality, globalization has widen the gap between the poor and the rich which prohibites democratization. Globalisation has brought the power of MNCs to direct many public policies in underdeveloped countries which brings advantage to MNCs.

Abstract

Applied in most countries, neo-liberalism has shifted the orientation of mass media from the public to the market. Journalism, as a result, tends to be driven by the market in which this leads to the failure of mass media in advancing democracy. This article demonstrates how the market-driven journalism creates the crisis of democracy.

Abstract

Media baru yang mengaburkan batas antara penerima dan pemroduksi pesan menawarkan peluang bagi representasi yang lebih luas masyarakat perbatasan. Ini karena-melalui media baru-masyarakat perbatasan dapat menampilkan diri secara terbuka tanpa terkendala oleh para gate keeper media massa. Dengan begitu, mereka bisa menjadi subjek bagi dirinya sendiri dengan tampil melalui blog, facebook, twitter, dan sebagainya. Namun, persoalannya bahwa masyarakat perbatasan menghadapi kelangkaan infrastruktur dan kurangnya literasi media. Akibatnya, mereka lebih sering menjadi objek dibandingkan sebagai subjek. Tulisan ini didasarkan atas observasi dan penelitian yang penulis lakukan pada 2012 dan 2016 yang dibiayai oleh LPP RRI di wilayah perbatasan (Batam, Entikong, Nunukan, Jayapura, dan Atambua). Selama penelitian tersebut, temuan-temuan di lapangan menemukan bahwa masyarakat perbatasan termajinalkan dari sisi komunikasi. Mereka tidak terepresentasikan dengan baik sebagai subjek warga negara. Langkanya infrastruktur membuat akses mereka terhadap media terbatas. Sebaliknya, mereka lebih banyak mendapatkan informasi dari negara tetangga, terutama Malaysia dan Timor Leste. Keberadaan media baru jelas memberikan peluang yang sangat besar untuk menjadikan masyarakat perbatasan sebagai subjek. Di beberapa perbatasan, teknologi internet telah diakses dengan baik. Namun, infastruktur lainnya dan pendidikan kurang pendukung. Oleh karena itu, perlu pembangunan infrastruktur, sarana pendidikan, dan literasi digital. Tanpa itu, masyarakat perbatasan akan tetap menjadi objek dalam dunia komunikasi yang semakin global. Kata Kunci: subjek, media baru, masyarakat perbatasan

Abstract

Kehadiran media jejaring sosial seperti facebook, twitter, dan juga aplikasi percakapan seperti WhatsApp telah mengubah secara signifikan pola-pola interaksi dan komunikasi individu. Sifatnya yang interaktif dan partisipatif telah memungkinkan komunikasi berlangsung secara lebih mendalam dan luas. Melalui media jejaring sosial media, seorang individu bisa menjadi penerima dan pemroduksi pesan dalam waktu yang hampir bersamaan. Sifat jangkauan media baru sangat luas, bahkan jauh lebih luas dibandingkan dengan media massa. Dampak yang ditimbulkannya juga demikian. Dalam situasi semacam ini, persoalan etis menjadi sangat penting, terutama karena pengguna media sosial semacam facebook mempunyai kebebasan yang hampir tanpa batas. Tulisan ini akan mengelaborasi lebih jauh persoalan-persoalan etis dalam komunikasi media baru. Bagaimanakan persoalan etis dalam komunikasi media baru atau secara lebih spesifik komunikasi dengan menggunakan media jejaring sosial semacam facebook ataupun twitter? Kemudian, sejauh mana, individu harus senantiasa menggunakan pertimbangan etis ketika berkomunikasi dengan menggunakan media baru tersebut? Kajian ini menemukan bahwa pertimbangan etis harus dilakukan dalam setiap tindakan komunikasi karena sifat otonomi dan kebebasan media baru serta jejaring sosial media tersebut. Dalam hal ini, tuntutan etika muncul bukan hanya prasyarat otonomi dan kebebasan, tapi juga sifat „sosial‟ media baru. Tulisan ini menawarkan model Alvin Day dalam proses pengambilan keputusan, yang mencakup tiga tahap, yakni definisi situasi, analisis, dan pengambilan keputusan. Abstract

This research is an attempt to explain the post-truth phenomenon in the WhatsApp group. This research, therefore uses online etnography or netnography, it found that the widespread post-truth in the WhatsApp group marked by the spread of hoax is not mere caused by a lack of digital literacy, but rather an ethics. The fact that conversation groups are able to analyze, and evaluate political messages, but uncritical when dealing with political messages that support their political choices (candidates). As a result, they tend to believe on what they might think as thruth, even with no clarifying wheather it’s true or false. In such case, they even deliberately and consistently to share any information even though other group providing correction for many times. This research, therefore suggests that digital literacy must be integrated with communication ethics. In regard with digital literacy, indeed it’s very necessary to enhance the critical capabilities of digital media users, while ethics lead people to always think and consider the good or bad of the communication activities.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the post-truth phenomenon is usually seen more often as a literacy or legal problem. In fact, when understood as new forms of political dishonesty, post-truth must be seen as an ethical problem. This study examines the post-truth phenomenon that takes place in the political reality in Indonesia using communication ethic. The study uses two methods, rhetorical analysis to analysis of Hoax spread on social media and participatory observations in WhatsApp groups. This study found that post-truth basically occurs because of the low ethics of media users in producing, consuming, and sharing social media content. They intentionally created “dishonest facts” in order to achieve their own goals. People involved in post-truth are very ideological and lack social sensitivity. They only care about the narratives they want to build and receive. So, the truth becomes less important. This research suggests that political communication in the post-truth era must be based on the ethics of communication in order to build a strong and stable democracy, and people who use social media must consider the ethics of communication

Abstract

There are plenty of critics coming upon the professional journalism or on the journalism that rises up the objectivity and neutrality. Professional journalism is believed has failed to cover the democratization of political system and citizens. On the other hand, attempts on running over the objectivity and neutrality make it trapped on the higher orientation, to the public figures. In facing those kind of weakness, public journalism is coming over it The basic orientation is how journalism ought to make itself as easy as possible for citizens to make intelligent decisions about public affairs, and to get them carried out

Abstract

The infotainment program, which recently broadcasted a lot, summon controversial among the society. Nahdlatul Ulama even issued the fatwa haram. Purpose of this article is not to extend those arguments, but to explore the ideology beyond it, neo-liberalism and what is the impact Infotainment is a cultural industry product, broadcast in some television stations, which chase only to make a profit. In this situation, infotainment trapped into liberalism paradox, and in any level represent social darwinism moral. As we can see, the infotainment journalists pay a lot of attention to artists' personal life, which put some limitation to the artists themselves. In the other hand, to pursue higher rate, journalists frequently don’t care about other people in society.
