Abstract

The objective of this experiment was to observe the anthelmintic effect of different concentration of root extract of the sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica L.) to Hymenolepis nana (Hymenolepis sp.) in mice. Sixty mice were divided into 6 groups consisting of 10 mice per group. Mice were infected with 100 infective eggs of Hymenolepis sp. after deworming by mebendazol. After reaching the prepaten phase (? 21st day), mice were treated with different concentration of root extract per oral, namely 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%. Positive control treated with mebendazole and negative control treated with distilled water. Fecal eggs were counted using McMaster method on day 2, 4, 6 and 8 after treatment. Mice were sacrificed for worm counting of Hymenolepis sp. in mice intestine on the day 10 day after treatment. Efication of the root extract to Hymenolepis sp. in mice for concentration 100%, 50%, 25% and 12.5% were 59.62%, 86.38%, 45.54%, 92.49% respectively. Reducing in the number of Hymenolepis sp. was inconsistency decreasing in the eggs number per gram fecal. Key words: Hymenolepis nana, Mimosa pudica L., anthelmintic

Abstract

Coleus blumei is a herbal plant used in the traditional medicine in Indonesia to expel the intestinal worm infections. Previous in vitro study showed that ethanol extract had the strongest anticestode activity compared to chloroform, hexane and aquaous extracts. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectivity of anticestode of ethanol leaves extract againts Hymenolepis microstoma infections in mice. The plant extract was tested against H. microstoma infections in the single doses of 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg kg-1 body weight. Dose were administered to H. microstoma infected mice for 3 consecutive days. The efficacy of the leave extract was determined in terms of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and worms reduction at necropsy. The results showed that the efficacy of leaves extract was dose dependent. The maximum efficacy of leave extract was observed with 2000 mg/kg dose reducing the EPG and worm counts by 55.46%-69.75% and  63.83% respectively.  The standard anticestodal drug, praziquantel at 25 mg/kg single dose revealed 100% reduction in both of EPG and worm counts. The study suggests that the leaves extract of C. blumei possesses significant anticestodal efficacy and supports its use in traditional medicine. Abstract

The present experiment was aimed to identify the phytochemical of Jatropha curcas leave extracted with water and methanol as an anthelmintic agent for Ascaridia galli, and its effect on native chicken performance. In vitro study of anthelmintic activity was conducted by counting the number of paralyzed worm dead-body of A. galli during 18 hours in petri dish containing different levels of extract, namely 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% (w/v) and compared to the piperazine 0.5% (w/v). Eightteen birds of naturally A. galli-infected native chicken were used for the in vivo study. The treatments were 0%, 2%, 4%, 8%, and 16% of J. curcass leave extract, and 10% of piperazine using a completely randomized block design with 6 treatments and 3 replications. Parameters observed were fecal worm egg count, feed consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and mortality. The results showed that water- and methanol-extracted J. curcas leave had similar composition of secondary metabolite compounds which is high in triterpenoid and steroid contents, respectively. Percentage of paralyzed A. galli was higher (P < 0.01) in water-extracted jatropha leaves. On the contrary, the dead-body percentage was higher (P < 0.05) in the methanol-extracted than that in the control group. In vivo study showed that leave meal significantly decreased (P < 0.05) fecal worm egg count. The leaf meal at the level 16% tended to increase feed consumption, body weight gain, and significantly decreased feed conversion ratio. In conclusion, J. curcas leave meal have anthelmintic activity to A. galli and could improve nutrient utilization of naturally A. galli-infected native chicken by decreasing feed conversion ratio.
