Abstract

AbstractThe aim of the research is to find out whether Think Aloud strategy is effective or not in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. This research used pre-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and three times of treatments. The participants of this research were 39 students of class X MIA at SMA Santo Fransiskus Asisi who were chosen by using cluster random sampling. The data were collected using the measurement technique and the tool of data collection was a written test. The research findings showed that the mean score of the students’ pre-test was 59.28 while the post-test was 77.53. The increase of the students’ mean score of pre-test and post-test was 18.25. It showed that the ability of the students increased after the treatment was conducted. The t-test was higher than the t-table (10.08 > 1.686). The result of the effect size (ES) was 1.51, which was categorized as a strong effect (ES > 0.50). It showed that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that the Think Aloud strategy is strongly effective to teach students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text, Think Aloud Strategy

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to find out the effectiveness of Hot Seat game in learning vocabulary to the ninth grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak in academic year 2018/2019. In doing this research, the researcher used pre-experimental study in one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 34 students who were chosen by using cluster random sampling. The data had been collected by using measurement technique. Based on the research findings, the mean score of students? pre-test was 48.49 which was considered as ?poor?, while the post-test was 73.98 which was considered as ?average to good?. The tratio (10.53) was bigger than tcritical (2.035) by degree of freedom 33. It meant that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, while alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The effect size of the treatment was 1.76 which was considered as strong effect size. It can be concluded that Hot Seat game affects significantly the students? vocabulary mastery. The researcher recommends the teacher to use this technique as a variation in teaching process, especially in teaching vocabulary. Keywords: Hot Seat game, Vocabulary mastery

Abstract

AbstractThis study wasaimed to know how students? participation in learning recount text improved through peer review technique. The study was conducted through Classroom Action Research which was done in two cycles. The subjects of the research were the English teacher and 16 students of class X MIPA 1 at MA Al-Ma?arifSintang in academic year 2017/2018. The writer used observation checklists and field notes as instruments of data collection. The finding showed that applying Peer Review technique improved students? participation from cycle to cyle. In the first cycle, the students actively participated in learning simple past tense (was/were) in recount text. However, the students? participation in the first cycle was not good enough and most of students were still get low result of participation, the writer conducted the second cycle. In the second cycle, the students improved their participation in learning regular and irregular verbs. In conclusion, students? participation on learning recount text specifically in simple past tense improved through Peer Review technique. Keywords: Students? Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research was to find out how the use of Make a Match Technique improved vocabulary of tenth-grade students of Islamic Boarding School of Mathla’ul Anwar Pontianak in academic year 2018/2019. This research used Classroom Action Research with two cycles. The subjects of this research were 36 students of X IPS 2. The result showed that the use of Make a Match Technique improved the students’ vocabulary. In the teaching learning process, the students were more enthusiastic and paid more attention to the learning activity. Furthermore, from the administered assessment, it showed that the students expand their vocabularies and can understand the meaning when doing written test in the class. As the result, from the students’ individual score, it improved in each cycle. Therefore, the researcher recommends teachers to use Make a Match as a vocabulary teaching technique as to help students improve their vocabulary. Keywords: Vocabulary, Make a Match Technique

Abstract

AbstractThe aimed of this reseach was to find out the effectiveness of  Contemporary Dancing Video  in teaching students writing narrative to year-10 students of  MA Negeri 2 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The population of this research was all year-10 students of  MA Negeri 2 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018 and the researcher took the sample by using cluster random sampling to determined the participant of the research which consisted of 39 students. From the data of the finding, itrevealed that the technique could make the students narrative writing ability increased significantly. It can be seen when the students tried to share and exchange their opinion and presented the discussion result in front of the class. The students put the core of narrative plot when presenting the story of the video.The research result showed that the technique was effective to enhance students narrative writing text due to the increasing for students’ achievements in narrative writing. It proved by the t-test calculation result which was higher than t-critical value (7.96 > 1.68). The effect size was 1.25 and categorized as high. As the conclusion, the media was able to be used in enhancing students’ ability in writing narrative text and the effect was positive. The researcher recommends this media as a variation in teaching process, especially in teaching writing narrative text.  Keywords:       Contemporary dancing video, Narrative text, teaching writing.

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to find out whether or not the Herringbone technique affected the teaching of reading comprehension of narrative text significantly to Year – 10 students of SMKN 03 Pontianak in Academic Year 2018/2019. This research was pre-experimental design with pre-test, post-test and three times of treatments. The data were collected through a multiple-choice test. The sample of the research was taken from Year – 10 AP4 classes which consist of 30 students. The finding showed that the mean score of the students’ pre-test was 66 while the post-test was 86. It showed that the achievement of the students increased after the treatment was conducted. In this research, the researcher used the t-table a (0.05) with a degree of freedom 29 is 1.699 meanwhile, the result of the t-test is 9.70 it means the t-test was higher than the t-table (9.70 > 1.699). The result of the effect size (ES) was 1.82 which was categorized as a strong effect. It showed that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It proved that the Herringbone technique affects significantly the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts, Herringbone Technique.

Abstract

Abstract The aim of this study was to find out what politeness strategies are implemented by the characters in the context of various role relationship in The Blind Side movie and the contexts that affect the choice of politeness strategies used by the characters. In this research, the researcher used the theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the Ethnography of Speaking proposed by Dell Hymes (1964). The method of this research was qualitative research. Through the transcript of The Blind Side movie, observation and note taking, the data was collected. The subject of the research was ten characters in The Blind Side movie who have various role relationships. The research was done by observing and analysing the contexts used by the characters, then based on the contexts the researcher interpret what politeness strategies used by the characters in The Blind Side movie. It can be concluded that there were four politeness strategies applied by the characters, they were Balad on Record strategy, Negative Politeness strategy, Off-Record strategy and Positive Politeness strategy. Furthermore, there were four contexts of situation affect the characters in choosing the politeness strategy. Abstract

Abstract                          The paper discusses the effectiveness of using picture series to increase students’ ability in writing procedure text at the eleventh grade students of SMK-SMTI Pontianak. The aim of this research was to know whether teaching writing procedure text by using picture series was effective to the eleventh grade students.The research method was pre- experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. The population was the eleventh grade students. The sample was XI D which consist 15 students. The technique of data collection was measurement technique and the tool of data collection was a written test. The result of T-test was 8.4 and the effect size was 2.2. It means that the effect size was high effect with ES > 0.8 (2.2 > 0,8). Based on the result, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The conclusion that the use of picture series is effective to teach students’ writing procedure text.                   Keywords : Writing, Procedure text, Picture series

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research was to know how educative cartoon film improved students’ speaking at the tenth grade students of MAN 2 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The research was conducted with Classroom Action Research in two cycles. The subject of this research was 38 students in class X MIPA 4. The researcher used observational checklists, field notes, and speaking performance as tools to collect the data. The result showed that the use of educative cartoon film improved students’ speaking. Based on the observational checklists and field notes, it showed that the students and the teacher’s behavior changed during the teaching and learning process that caused the students to be more enthusiastic and focus in teaching and learning activity. Furthermore, from the speaking performance, the students did not stutter anymore and displayed less tension while performing their speaking in front of the class. As the result, the researcher recommends the teacher in high school settings to use educative cartoon film as teaching media to teach speaking in order to help students focus and improve their speaking.  Keywords:       Educative Cartoon Film, Speaking

Abstract

Semantic mapping is introduced as a vocabulary presentation technique through descriptive text. The purpose of this research is to know the effectiveness of using semantic mapping in increase the students vocabulary achievement to the seventh grade student of SMPN 1 Samalantan in academic year 2011/2012. The method is through pre-experimental study, using a measurement technique in form of multiple choices and matched words which consists of 20 test items with two supported descriptive text. Based on the data analysis, the mean score of pre-test 4.4, qualifying poor and post-test mean score was 7.4, qualifying average to good. The results confirmed that semantic mapping technique in teaching vocabulary through a descriptive text effectively increase the students achievement of vocabulary. Keywords: Vocabulary, semantic mapping, achievement Abstrak: Semantic mapping adalah teknik yang diperkenalkan sebagai salah satu teknik untuk mempresentasikan kosakata dalam suatu paragraf deskriptiv. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui semantic mapping efektiv dalam meningkatkan kosakata siswa kelas tujuh di SMPN 1 Samalantan tahun ajaran 2011/2012. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimen, bentuk penelitian eksperimen adalah multiple choices and matched words dengan jumlah soal 20 item disertai dua paragraf deskriptiv. Berdasarkan data analisis, nilai rata-rata pre-test adalah 4.4, dalam kualifikasi rendah (poor) dan nilai rata-rata post-test adalah 7.4, dalam kualifikasi baik (good). Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik semantic mapping dalam mengajar kosakata didalam paragraf deskriptiv efektiv menigkatkan kosakata siswa.
