Abstract

Social reason means because there are people or society who should benefit from what is done. The knowledge possessed by lecturers or academics must be used for society. One of the ways to make this knowledge accessible to the public is that lecturers or academics must write it down in the mass media. Mass media is a term that began to be used in the 1920s for a type of media designed to reach a very broad community, often shortened to media. An article published in the mass media is usually referred to as a popular article. The problem is that not every lecturer or academician is able to write popular articles to be published in the mass media. That is why training in writing popular articles was necessary and important to be held, including for lecturers or academics at Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The training was attended by 72 registered lecturers from various faculties: Medicine, Pharmacy, Economics, Dentistry, Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA), Public Health, Information Technology, Agriculture, Agricultural Technology, Nursing, Social and Political Sciences (ISIP), and Animal Science.

Abstract

Alms Food is a food procurement program that collects donations from any philanthrope and spends them on farmers, ranchers and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Fresh, healthy, and environmentally friendly food are food ingredients that are produced directly by the local producers without using hazardous chemicals in the production process. The multiplier effect refers to the many benefits of action for the parties involved. The sustainable socio-economic-environmental sector is a space for community relational dynamics to produce and live together that considers present and future aspects. Furthermore, this is one of the strategies to create markets for local products so that they have targetted consumers so that production can continue, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. This community engagement comprises three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation of the results. This activity had been held for 11 weeks in the target recipient locations in several sub-districts, Padang City, West Sumatra Province. This program's concept of the multiplier effect must attract and encourage other sectors to get involved, either directly or indirectly, including food producers, cooperatives, philanthropists, academics, and beneficiary community groups. It hopes that program should be continued another further weeks.

Abstract

The city of Padang produces approximately 600 tons of waste daily, which includes the categories of recyclable and non-recyclable waste. However, the percentage of waste that can be recycled is only about 17% and the rest must be heaped into end landfill every day. The category of recycled waste is counted as much as 65% is organic waste that is made into compost and 35% is both plastic and paper waste that is processed into other products. Maggot, which is the larva of the Black Soldier Fly, is an organic matter-decomposing agent that has better decomposition capabilities than other organisms. Maggot has biomass with high protein and fat content. Maggot farming is the most appropriate effort needed by the community today, because in addition to processing daily organic waste, it will also produce feed for livestock such as chicken, duck, fish, and bird. The farming process only requires simple technology and low cost, but is able to reduce the earth's waste load. The Andalas University community service team provided training on maggot farming to process organic waste from community households. The training was carried out using the Hybrid method, which is a combination of offline and online techniques with the same goal. The activity began with counseling on theoretical explanations, followed by both the farming practices and further program assisting. It hopes that the activity will be improved by other trainings such as Maggot’s processing into more valuable products, so that it can be packaged in such a way as to be marketed to the target purchasers.

Abstract

Pasar Rabu Tani (PRT) is an online media for buying and selling transactions between producers and consumers of food needs, in the form of a digital shop on the site https://pasarrabutani.com/. PRT created an alternative form of the market by uniting small-scale food business actors in a cooperative called the Koperasi Pemasaran Mandiri dan Merdeka. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, PRT must shift the marketing system from conventional direct meetings between producers and consumers to a contextual system where producers and consumers cannot have direct meetings. Digital stores are one of the solutions for market media during a pandemic by utilizing information and communication technology products. The management of this market in terms of buying and selling is carried out by special operators who act as website managers, data administrators, and delivery personnel. The methods used were enhancing product quality by producers, socializing the online shopping system to consumers, and assisting operators of PRT in running a business. The digital strategy in the marketing and transactions of food products makes it easy for managers to obtain a database of potential producers and products and a database of possible consumer performance, both from within and outside West Sumatra. Digital stores that are displayed online, of course, reach consumers without space and time limits, which affects increasing producer income.

Abstract

The main problem of livestock farming is still providing qualified feed at lower costs. Commercial feed prices are not suitable for traditional farming, thus increasing production costs more. The Labung Raya farmer's group understood that the provision of maggot larvae of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) could meet the protein needs of the livestock, such as poultry and catfish. The problems raised so far were that the growth of maggot produced was not maximized, such as few eggs, small larval body size, maggot coming out of the bucket, and not optimal fermentation of maggot feed. The activity began with a brainstorming event about the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the community. The implementation of the activities was continued with the method of counselling, training, and continuous mentoring. This community engagement was welcomed by the general community and the Labung Raya breeder group's partners. The practice of cultivating Maggot BSF is straightforward for anyone to do. The cultivation process only requires simple technology and low cost but requires breeding skills for optimal results. Maggot as a product is expected to be used as an alternative protein-rich animal feed ingredient in soaring prices for conventional feed, especially for poultry.

Abstract

The business potential for brewed coffee by Baristas is very large, especially coffee beans from Indonesian volcanic soil because they have a prime taste. The Gumarang coffee shop started amid the Covid-19 pandemic, this business can grow and survive, but has not yet developed optimally according to its existing potential. Gumarang operated with production equipment that has a small capacity for dispensing coffee, so it has not been able to meet all consumer demands. Gumarang had the opportunity to develop the business under the guidance of the Mandiri and Merdeka Cooperative (KMDM) so that it could apply the elements of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) concept already had. The value proposition element for Gumarang is the existence of an original type of coffee, namely original Minangkabau coffee cultivated by local West Sumatra farmers. Then there is the Gumarang Signature, which is a formula or recipe owned by the Barista. In addition, Gumarang also provides space and organizing services for community events in the city of Padang with friendly service and a traditional minimalist cafe concept, branded as Harmonis Space. The Gumarang coffee shop which was developed into Harmonis Space requires assistance from academics to stay on the path of the business concept. The method used was training, consultation, and evaluation, by the community engagement team and partners. The ultimate goal of a series of activities is to increase partner income as well as community empowerment to strengthen the family economy.
