Abstract

The research was conducted at Laboratory of Insect Physiology and Toxicology of Plant Protection Department of Bogor Agricultural University from May to July 2008. Leaves, twigs, barks, and roots of Eurycoma longifolia (Pasak bumi) were extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvens. The extraction was used single method and level method. Insecticidal activity of each extract has been examined in laboratory to major cabbage pests Crocidolomia pavonana using leaf residual method. Methanol root extract from single method and level method caused 100 and 75.5% mortality of insect test respectively. Hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of leaves, twigs, and barks have low insecticidal activity. The antifeedant effect worked at insect test and varied depends on concentration level. Antifeedant effect also contributed to mortality of larvae along with toxicity of each extract.

Abstract

Brown planthopper (BPH) is a major pest on rice plants that can cause hopperburn and crop failure. The study aimed to determine the level of BPH attack on several local rice varieties in the Pasaman Regency. This research was conducted in a greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas, using a completely randomized design (CRD), with five treatments and five replications. The treatments were four different rice varieties from Pasaman and control (Siganteng, Pulau Batu, Mundam Kuning, Mundam Putih, IR 42). BPH was infested when the rice was five days after sowing. Observation parameters were the percentage and the intensity of the attacks. Observations were done until 15 days after infestation; after the IR 42 variety died 90%. The results showed that the attack rate of BPH on rice varieties from Pasaman was moderate. The lowest percentage of attack occurred in the Mundam Putih variety (94%), while the intensity of the attack was not significantly different from other varieties.

Abstract

Plant extracts have been known to cause inhibit the growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. This study was aimed to determine the most potential part of Cassia alata crude extract to control antrachnose on chili. The study was conducted in Phytopathology Laboratory, Plant Pests and Diseases Department, Agriculture Faculty, Andalas University, from April to June 2015. The research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with seven treatments and five replications. The treatments were several extracts from different parts of C. Alata: 1) control 2) flower, 3) old leaf, 4) young leaf, 5) stem, 6) root, and 7) seed with concentration of 5% respectively. Variables observed were colony growth, colony width, conidia number, colony wet and dry weight, and conidia germination. The result showed that all of C. alata extracts could inhibit the growth of C. gloeosporioides in vitro. The best extract was from the old leaf with the percentage of colony width, conidia number, colony wet and dry weight, and conidia germination of 64,30%, 82,41%, 37,77, 29,8%, and 79,96% respectively.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the safety of mixture formulations of Tephrosia vogelii and Piper aduncum at various storage temperatures and their insecticidal activity against C. pavonana larvae. Formulations were made from T. vogelii and P. aduncum (1:5) in emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and wettable powder (WP) form. Both formulations have strong insecticidal activity against C. pavonana. This research used a randomized completed design in different temperature treatments. Insecticidal activity of formulations after storage was tested against C. pavonana. The treatments were done using deep leaf method in 5 concentrations and 5 replications. The results showed that LC95 value of EC formulation after storage at condition: below 4°C, room temperature, and 40°C were 0.19%, 0.34% and 0.21% respectively. Based on LC95 value of EC formulation from each treatment, indicated that EC formulation after storage could hold insecticidal activity as good as insecticidal activity before storage due to LC95 value after storage relatively lower than LC95 value before storage (0.35%). In the contrary, WP formulation activity was significantly decreased in all treatments compared to WP formulation activity before storage based on LC95 value.

Abstract

Activity of use management technologogy for pest and plant disease control on vegetables based environment friendly in nagariPaninjauan Kabupaten Tanah Datar has been carried out from June toNovember 2014. This activity aims to improve farmers knowledgeabout the diseases attack of vegetables and know how to manage thedisease using biopesticide and botanic biopesticide, These activities include: Counseling and training, andevaluation. Results of monitoring the level of disease in vegetable cropsis known that those plants attacked by pest and pathogens e.i, soft rot (cabbage), anthracnosa, bacterial wilt and leaf spot (chili), tuber rot (carrots) and bacterial leaf blight and Alternaria spots (onion leaves).Attack rate ranged between 16 – 20% for disease and 15 – 30% for pest. From the activities can be take several conclusions: (1) Extent of diseasein vegetable crops in this area is high, (2) The farmers do not yetunderstand the causes of pest and plant disease ( pathogens) that attacktheir vegetable crops, (3) The farmers do not understand the methods ofdisease control using biopesticide and botanic biopesticide, (4) Theextension and field practice, have improved farmers' knowledge aboutthe management of vegetable diseases using biopesticides and botanicbiopesticide

Abstract

Sclerotium rolfsii is a fungus that causes stem rot disease in peanuts which causes losses of up to 59%. One technique of controlling the S. rolfsii is using a botanical fungicide, such as ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) rhizome extract. This study aimed to determine the proper concentration of ginger rhizome extract to control S.rolfsii, the causes of stem rot, and damping-off diseases in peanut in-vitro. This study used a completely randomized design with five treatments and five replications. The treatments were arranged in the concentration of 0, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% by in-vitro. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by an LSD of 5%. The results showed that ginger rhizome extract could suppress the growth of S. rolfsii, which causes stem rot disease in peanut plants. Ginger rhizome extract reduced the thickness of the colonies, suppressed colony expansion, reduced the wet and dry weight of the colonies, slowed the appearance of Sclerotia, and reduced the number of Sclerotia formed. The higher concentration, the higher the emphasis on S. rolfsii. Ginger rhizome extract at a concentration of 10% can inhibit colony growth by 81.63%, inhibit the formation of sclerotia by 100%, reduce the wet weight of the colony to 66.88% and the dry weight of the colony to 44.11% and inhibit the formation of Sclerotia reaching 100%.

Abstract

S. litura F pests are widespread in Indonesia covering 22 provinces with an average attack area of 11,163 ha/year.  This pest is polyphag causing damage to the leaves (defoliation) with crop loss can reach 85% even to failed miserably.  The application of biotechnology derived from local resources is a very appropriate alternative to controlling S. litura, namely Bacillus cereus strain ATCC 14579,  Bacillus subtillis subsp. subtilis strain 168  Bacillus siamensis strain KCTC13613, Azotobacter sp. and Pseudomonas fluorescens isolated from the LMO banana stem bud.  The aim of this study is to determine the potential of 5 types of bacteria that were consortified as S. litura pest bio-control agents. The research consisted of stages, namely 1) bacterial compatibility test which would be consortified; 2) invitro bacterial consortium potential test on S. litura F. larvae.  The results showed that the bacteria B. cereus strain ATCC 14579, B. subtillis subsp. Subtilis strain 168 B. siamensis strain KCTC13613, Azotobacter sp. and P. fluorescens are compatible with each other so that they can be consortified. These 5 types of bacteria are single less potential as S. litura pest bio-control agents because they cause low larval mortality, but a consortium of 5 bacteria can cause larval mortality by 70% . Keywords: biocontrol agents, Spodoptera litura, bacterial consortium, LOM banana stem bud
