Abstract

The aim of this study is to know  the differences of enhancement in mathematical problem solving ability (MPSA) between the students who received soft skill-based metacognitive learning (SSML) with the students who got conventional learning (CL). This research is a quasi experimental design with pretest-postest control group. The population in this study is the students of Junior High School in Pekanbaru city. The sample consist of 135 students, 68 of them are from the high-level school, and 67 students are from the middle-level school. The instruments are mathematical prior knowledge (MPK) test, MPSA test, instruction observation sheet, students journal about the lesson, and the guideline for interview. The data was analyzed using t-test and two-way ANOVA. The result of data analysis indicates: (1) overall, the enhancement of students' MPSA with SSML approach significantly is higher than those with conventional learning (CL); (2) there is no interaction between the learning approach (SSML and CL) with the school level (high and middle) toward the enhancement of MPSA; (3) there is no interaction between the learning approach (SSML and CL) with MPK (upper, middle, and low) toward the enhancement of MPSA.

Abstract

The students' difficulty which was found is in the problem of understanding, drawing diagrams, reading the charts correctly, conceptual formal mathematical understanding, and mathematical problem-solving. The appropriate problem representation is the basic way in order to understand the problem itself and make a plan to solve it. This research was the experimental classroom design with a pretest-posttest control in order to increase the representation of visual thinking ability on mathematical problem-solving approach with contextual learning. The research instrument was a test, observation, and interviews. Contextual approach increases of mathematical representations ability increases in students with high initial category, medium, and low compared to conventional approaches.

Abstract

Geometry is a basic mathematical concept studied at all education levels. However empiricalevidence suggests there are many students who have difficulties learning geometry. One ofmany factors that enhances the success of students’ understanding of geometry is students’ senseof spatial ability. Seeking ways to support students’ development of spatial sense, researchersstudied the impact of Computer-Based Interactive Multimedia Instruction. This study was quasiexperimental in nature with Pretest and Post-test Control Group Design. The participants of thestudy were second grade students of two public junior high schools that were classified as schoolsof high and middle level ranking, in Bandung. The instruments utilized in this study consistedof prior mathematical skills test (KAM) and spatial sense ability test. The results suggested that:(1a) generally the students’ spatial sense ability and learning independency were enhanced usingComputer-Based Interactive Multimedia Instruction, compared with conventional learning;(1b) there were no differences in the enhancement achievements between students’ spatial senseability and conventional learning related to school ranking level; (1c) according to KAM, therewere significant enhancements of student’s spatial sense ability between high, middle, and lowKAM; (2) There is no interaction of effect between learning (CBIM and CVL) and school levelto the enhancement of ability of students’ spatial sense. (3) There is no interaction of effectbetween learning (CBIM and CVL) and KAM to the enhancement of ability of students’ spatialsense.Keywords: geometry, spatial sense, computer-based interactive multimedia, learning difficulties.

Abstract

This article is derived from the results of research entitled "Improving Students' Mathematical Understanding and Problem Solving Skills and Their Learning Interests in MTs through Contextual Teaching and Learning Learning (CTL)" which aims to see not only the influence of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in increasing students' mathematical understanding and problems solving skills, but also to see their interests in learning mathematic as well. This research is a quasi-experiment study. The population in this study is all students of MTs Cianjur district. The sample in this research are 36 students of class VII A as experiment class and 36 students of class VII B as control class. The data in this study was analyzed using parametric and non parametric statistics. The results of this study indicate that students' mathematical understanding and problem solving skills, as well as their learning interests when using the approach of Contextual Teaching and Learning Learning (CTL), is better than the students using conventional learning. There is an association between the quality of students' mathematical understanding skill and their mathematical problem solving skill with high enough criteria. There is an association between the quality of students' understanding and their interest in learning mathematic with high criteria. There is an association between students' problem-solving skill and learning interests with fairly high criteria.

Abstract

The problem in this research is still the low of communication ability and mathematics connection and the independence of student learning MTs. This study aims to determine and examine whether the achievement and improvement of communication skills and mathematical connections and student learning independence using a problem-based approach is better than the learning by using ordinary learning, knowing the association between communication skills with mathematical connections, mathematical communication with learning independence and ability mathematical connection with the independence of learning both groups of students. This research uses quasi experimental research method with non equivalent control group design and using purposive sampling technique. The population of the research were the students of class VIII in one of MTs in Subang. The sample used was the students of class VIII E as the experimental class and VIII G as the control class. The data collection from this research is in the form of test and non-test. Both groups were given pretest and postes the ability of mathematical communication and questionnaires to measure students' learning independence. The form of test used is a test of the ability of communication and mathematical connections while to measure student learning independence using non-test instruments. The results showed that: the achievement and improvement of communication skills and mathematical connections and learning independence of students who received learning by using a problem-based approach is better than students who received regular learning. There is a strong association between communication skills with mathematical connections, mathematical communication with learning independence and mathematical connection ability with learning independence.

Abstract

This study explores the basic mathematics abilities of pre-service chemistry students in the specific area of mathematics that consists of four sections, on logarithms, scientific notation , algebra, and graphs. The results of this study were used to develop content lecture of chemistry mathematics course in both chemistry education curriculum and science of chemistry. The participants were 150 students that consists of three level, one level, two, and three, each of 50 respondents. The basics mathematics ab ilities of three level chemistry students were compared with each other. The questions were used in this descriptive study are all multiple choice that developed based on four mathematics concept and related with the needs of chemistry students. The results ind icated that were not significantly differents in mathematics abilities among the tree level of students. Student achievements in basic mathematics consists of logarithms, scientific notation, algebra, and graphs wer, dan respectively. The mathematics concepts that are still difficult to understanding for students were algebra manipulation, transformation of mathematics equation from exponensial to logarithm equation, and understanding of graphs both exponensia l and logarithm equation.Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi kemampuan matematika dasar mahasiswa pendidikan kimia pada konsep logaritma, notasi saintifik, aljabar dasar, dan grafik. Hasil studi digunakan sebagai dasar untuk pengembangan bahan ajar mata kuliah matematika kimia pada kurikulum pendidikan kimia dan jurusan kimia. Sampel penelitian adalah 150 mahasiswa yang terdiri atas tiga tingkatan, yaitu tingkat 1, 2, dan 3 yang masing-masing 50 orang. Kemampuan konsep dasar matematik dari tiga tingkatan akan diperbandingan satu sama lain. Instrumen yang digunakan pada metode deskriptif ini berupa tes pilihan ganda yang dikembangkan berdasarkan konsep matematika yang diukur dan relevan dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa kimia. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa perbandingan kemampuan dasar matematik antara tiga tingkatan mahasiswa tidak memberikan perbedaan yang signifikant pada sejumlah konsep matematik yang bersesuaian dan nilai total. Untuk itu, kemampuan mahasiswa pendidikan kimia secara rata-rata pada konsep logaritma, notasi saintifik, aljabar, dan grafik berturut-turut adalah 58,6; 66,3; 51,2; dan 32,8. Konsep dasar matematik yang masih sukar dipahami adalah mengubah bentuk persamaan eksponensial ke bentuk logoritma, distribusi persamaan logaritma, hukum dasar aljabar, aritmetika bilangan dalam notasi saintifik, grafik persamaan eksponensial, dan grafik persamaan logaritma.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate, compare, and describe the achievement and enhancement of students' mathematical communication skills (MCS). It based on the prior mathematical knowledge (PMK) category (high, medium and low) by using Treffinger models (TM) and conventional learning (CL). This research is an experimental study with the population of all students of Mathematics Education Department who took Discrete Mathematics subject matter of one university in the city of Ternate. The results show that (1) the achievement and enhancement of MCS  students that used  TM are higher than the students learning using CL; (2) Based on the categories of PMK, the achievement and enhancement of MCS of students using TM are also higher than those learning with CL; and (3) There was no interaction effect between learning (TM and CL) and PMK to the achievement and enhancement of MCS of the students.Keyword: Communication Skills, Prior Mathematical Knowledge, Treffinger Model

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effect of the application of contextual teaching and learning (CTL) approach to the enhance of mathematical critical thinking ability (MCTA) of Primary School Teacher Students (PSTS). This research is an experimental study with the population of all students PSTS who took algebra subject matter of one  university in the city of Bogor. The results showed: (1) the increase of MCTA of student who receive CTL better than students who receive TTL; (2) There are differences in the increase MCTA between students in groups of high MPA, medium MPA, and low MPA, both the student who received the CTL and TTL; and (3) There is no interaction between learning factors (CTL and TTL) with MPA (high, medium and low) toward the enhance of MCTA.Keywords: Critical Thinking Ability in Mathematics, Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach, Prior Mathematical Ability DOI: dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.61.53

Abstract

The study was report the findings of an only post-test control group research design and aims to analyze the influence of problem-based learning approach, school level, and students' prior mathematical ability to student's mathematics critical thinking ability. The research subjects were 140 grade ten senior high school students coming from excellent and moderate school level. The research instruments a set of mathematical critical thinking ability test, and the data were analyzed by using two ways ANOVA and t-test. The research found that the problem-based learning approach has significant impact to the ability of students' mathematics critical thinking in terms of school level and students' prior mathematical abilities. Furthermore. This research also found that there is no interaction between learning approach and school level, and learning approach and students' prior mathematics ability to students' mathematics critical thinking ability.
