Abstract

This study aims to report the results of qualitative research using a case study design on the team teachers’ beliefs about their roles in collaborative team teaching between native-English speaking teachers (NESTs) and local English teachers (LETs) in Indonesian secondary schools and aspects that shape their beliefs. Two pairs of English team teachers at two Junior High Schools in Ponorogo were interviewed and their classroom practices were observed. Then, the data were analyzed by using the interactive model proposed by Miles Huberman. The findings showed that NESTs and LETs possessed different beliefs about their roles in team teaching in which NESTs perceived their roles primarily dealing with linguistic and cultural aspects. Meanwhile, LETs played roles as the main teachers who led the classes by writing lesson plans, choosing the materials, focusing on theory (delivering basic materials), and assessing students. Furthermore, three factors shape teachers’ beliefs about their roles in team teaching, namely training, teaching experience, and learning experience. This research findings are expected to provide some recommendations to wide range of stakeholders to re-examine the practice of team teaching between NESTs and LETs by focusing on their respective strengths to generate the best classroom practices.

Abstract

This study explored types of grammar learning strategies (GLS) used by freshmen of University Darussalam Gontor and their ways in applying GSL in grammar class. This research employed survey research design by gathering data from questionnaire adapted from Bayou (2015) which was modified from Oxford (1990) Language Learning Strategies Classification and open-ended interview. As many as 35 of 60 students (58.3%) who consisted of males and females completed the questionnaire voluntarily. The data were analyzed in simple numerical statistics for the RQ1 and described in details for the RQ2. The result of the study revealed that compensation strategies were the most preferred strategy used by students as many as 75%. It meant that the students were more conscious in using the strategy of grammar knowledge. These results of percentage illustrated that the students employed direct strategies more than indirect strategies. Further, the ways students employed GLS in grammar classroom were described in details.

Abstract

Receiving information begins with listening. EFL learners at universities should master listening for academic purposes with appropriate strategies. This article examined the strength of the bottom-up strategy in teaching listening for the academic purpose of the third-semester female students in the Department of English Language Education, the University of Darussalam Gontor, which is a pesantren -based university. This research utilized a quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The participants involved 14 who were regarded in English language teaching.  They were tested by pre-and post-treatment listening for academic purposes. The data were analyzed by paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant inequality between the mean score of the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the post-test of learners was improved than theirs in the pre-test. Thus, the female learners in this research achieved well in promoting teaching listening for academic purposes after being treated using a bottom-up strategy.

Abstract

Indek literasi seringkali digunakan sebagai instrumen keberhasilan pendidikan di suatu negera. Masyarakat yang memiliki minat dan budaya baca tinggi diyakini memiliki tingkat literasi yang tinggi pula. Namun, fakta menyatakan adanya penurunan tingkat literasi masyarakat. Berdasarkan survey lapangan, mitra yang merupakan Yayasan Kyai Ageng Mohammad Besari yang bertugas memelihara dan mengelola wisata religi masjid dan makam Kyai Mohammad Hasan Besari di Desa Tegalsari, Kecamatan Jetis, Kabupaten Ponorogo memiliki fasilitas pendukung literasi terbatas terkait dengan koleksi buku maupun akses terhadap buku murah dan berkualitas. Solusi dari permasalah tersebut adalah pengabdian masyarakat yang fokus pada pendirian taman baca dan pelaksanaan kegiatan pendukung, seperti acara bedah buku dan penyuluhan UMKM diyakini dapat meningkatkan minat dan budaya baca guna meningkatkan daya tarik wisata religi di masjid dan makam Kyai Ageng Mohammad Besari. Metode untuk mendirikan taman baca adalah metode ADDIE. Hasil dari monitoring dan evaluasi yang dilakukan di akhir program pengabdian masayrakat ini menunjukkan bahwa pendirian taman baca memberikan suasana yang berbeda terhadap kegiatan wisata religi dan mitra antusias dalam mengikuti rangkaian kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat.
