Abstract

Continuing the previous edition, this bibliography presents dissertations titles produced mainly from universities in Australia, America, and Canada. Not only dissertations ones, some important theses are also displayed in this bibliography. The period 1980-1999 is a salient period in the process of Indonesian Islamic studies development. Since 1990 Minister of Religious Affairs has selectively sent Indonesian scholars finishing their master degree to McGill University. For the result, they produced theses master on Indonesian Islam. On the one hand, this theses can be used as an evidence that Indonesian scholars were able to “introduce” Indonesian Islam abroad; on the other hand, this introduction focuses on leaders thought—which is then dominated the pattern of Islamic studies in Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions. In comparison, dissertation/thesis from the universities in the United States and Australia shows notable interesting assumption that during that period the scholars whose background are Islamic studies tend to produce theological-doctrinal dissertation/thesis as well as that of leaders-thought; while scholars with social and cultural background tend to review Islam from the attending problems in society. Keywords: Islamic Studies, McGill University, Bibliography, Dissertation, Indonesia

Abstract

Bhagavad-Gita has continuously been translated and distributed in some Indonesian regions, especially in Java and Bali. It has religiously been read not only by Hindu people community, but mostly discussed by Theosophical society and Javanese aliran kebatinan people. This paper aims to analyze two translated versions of Bhagavad-Gita written by Kwee Tek Hoay (KTH), which was translated in Indonesian language Bhagavad Gita Interpreted (1960) and in Javanese one Handaran Bhagavad-Gita (1960). KTH confidently claims that he used Bhagavat-Gita Interpreted in the Light of Christian Tradition(1923) as a source of translation. This paper investigates how “spiritual” salient concepts was translated, transformed and contested in the context of Chinese-Indonesian and Javanese terms. This paper concludes that the passion of KTH translocality translation has been a representative of fluid religious identity which constitutes a specific worldview of Indonesian society as an inspiration source of spirituality. KTH percaya diri mengklaim bahwa ia menggunakan Bhagavat-Gita Interpreted in the Light of Christian Tradition (1923) sebagai sumber terjemahan.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to give a preliminary draft to formulate an innovative concept in the Qur’anic studies world in the age of post-consumerism Muslim. Recent studies on tug of war between globalization and religion have been identifying salient social transformation in some parts of Muslim world, such as the rise of new (media) religious authority, religious commodification trends, varieties of Islamic consumption, the emergence of public Islam and so forth. Apart from these recent scholarships, which successfully grasp the globalization’s influence toward religion (Islam), this paper offers the concept of everyday Qur’an as an alternative basic approach of understanding the cultures of Qur’an in this changing (Muslim) world and at the same time, seeking to briefly explain its emerging issues. Some exemplary issues then have analytically discussed to reflect how the proposed theory applied. Thus, everyday Qur’an can contribute the discourse of cultures based technology in the context of Qur’anic Studies.
