Abstract

This research deals with multimodal discourse analysis. The data were collected from printed advertisements ofJawa Pos newspaper. Generic Structure Potential of printed advertisement (GSP) proposed by Cheong (2004)and Hallidays (1994) transitivity were applied. Cheongs framework is applied to reveal the elements of visualand linguistic elements, meanwhile Hallidays transitivity is used to know the processes. Thereby, this researchdiscovers the relationship between image and text in one context. The result shows that visual elements in theprinted advertisements are Lead, Emblem, and Display. Lead consists of Locus of Attention (LoA) andComplements to the Locus of Attention (Comp. LoA). Meanwhile, the linguistic elements are Announcement,Emblem, Enhancer, Tag, and Call-and-Visit Information. Finally, it is found that there is interconnectednessbetween the visual and linguistic elements in the printed advertisement. It causes high ContextualizationPropensity (CP), narrow Interpretative Space (IS), and also small Semantic Effervescence (SE).Keywords: Generic Structure Potential (GSP), Ideational Meaning, Multimodal Discourse, PrintedAdvertisement

Twelve to fourteen students(86-99%) said that this method has a capability to give learning motivation interms of an effective interaction between lecturers-students as well asaffective support needed by the students. It means that this teaching design isquite appropriate to use as an alternative method in supplying entrepreneurshipskill through its output that is writing skill ability.Key words: Entrepreneurship, wrting 1, storybook for children

Abstract. Non English Departmentstudents find it difficult to understand an English text. Therefore, to answerthe need of those students, ESP is carried out for them. To make themunderstand what a text is about, English sentence patterns in terms of Kernelsentence patterns are introduced to them during the ESP course. However, thisteaching seems not working well. A solution is offered, dealing with sevenskills covering the introduction of parts of speech, phrases, kinds of clauses, subject and finite verbs, and main idea. With lots of drilling on those skills, students realize that they help them much in the text understanding.  Keywords: subjects, finite verbs, non finiteverbs, main clauses, sub clauses, main idea

Abstract

Abstract. Failure made by my students ofWriting 01 class in recognizing and using verbs in different functions equippedby their counterparts, that are auxiliaries, triggered me to compose particularmaterials of writing class: the basic level. This insight is mostly based onthe concept offered by Deterding and Poedjosoedarmo (2002) on verbs. This isthen supported by other concepts on verbs, combined together with my resume onhow to make ease students’ comprehension on verbs in relation to theimplementation of predicates,  in termsof verbal and nominal sentences as the core. I argue that these sequence ofmaterials with emphasis on verbs are beneficial, in a way that these will breakdown student’s failure on comprehending what parts of speech are, what verbs andtheir forms as well as their functions, how the verbs are applied in tenses, how to use other forms of verbs, i.e. have + past participle, to be + pastparticiple, and such. Yet, this insight is expected to contribute to theteaching learning activities, in particular, for the sake of implantingknowledge on verbs to students that help them in obtaining writing ability.  Keywords: writing, verbs, predicate, auxiliaries, linking verbs

Abstract

The Adjustment Bureau movie depicts the character David Norris who struggled to get the autonomy of himself because his life is under controlled by The Adjustment Bureau which has full control of human?s life to make people live life based on their plan. David Norris as the main character in the movie is believed to construe individualism. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) reveal the delineation of individualism in the movie through its linguistic data, (2) convey the interpretation of the relation between linguistic data and the discourse practice to reveal individualism in The Adjustment Bureau movie, and (3) explain why individualism exists in the movie. Further, this study applies qualitative method since the data are in form of clauses taken from the clauses of David Norris and the members of The Adjustment Bureau in the movie. In analyzing the data, it is used Fairclough three stages in critical discourse analysis; describing the text, interpreting the discursive practice, and explaining the sociocultural context. From the analysis, it reveals that David using his power through the use of linguistic choice succeed to defend his ideology.

Abstract

Abstract This paper offers a solution to Indonesia’s mission of investing EFL listening materials with character education in higher institutions. The character is seen as a dimension of content competence, namely attitude. Developed by using Content-Based Instruction approach, the alternative view is reflected through listening materials design to target strengthening moral values, principles, and attitudes. The framework argues that listening materials should accommodate the need to tailor materials for teaching, rather, than for assessment. It also responds to the ubiquity of English as a Lingua Franca. It argues that the investment of character education leads to learning targets that allow students to become concerned, informed, and involved in developing themselves as citizens, and to respond to 21st-century language competences, especially in the ability to embrace cross-cultural understanding and in the use of digital technology in classroom language learning. The proposed framework is offered as decisions made on the materials’ resources, method of development, activities, and assessment. Rancangan materi ini juga merespon kehadiran perspektif English as a Lingua Franca. How to Cite : Kusumaningputri, R., Khazanah, D., Setiarini, R. (2017).
