Abstract

Specifically, the purpose of this study to determine what types of questions teachers ask when they are teaching descriptive text. A single-case study was conducted for the purpose of this analysis. SMPN 1 Wonoayu's class VIII-I, which had ten students and one EFL instructor, participated in this study. Observation and interview were the instruments used in this study. Analysis of instructor use questioning strategy in descriptive text on classroom teaching and learning process; analysis of teacher interview statements; and analysis of student interview statements comprised three sections of the findings. An important goal was to get a better understanding of how teachers approach teaching descriptive literature, why they choose this kind of inquiry, and how students respond to the questions they are asked. It was designed to help students remember what they had learned in the previous session, and to get the class started off on the right foot. Lecture-based questioning was utilized to keep students engaged and ensure they understood what was being spoken. In order to assist students to develop their ideas, only thinking-based questions were utilized in this course. Lecture-based questions were utilized in the classroom to keep students engaged and to ensure that they understood the material. That the teacher used questioning strategies because she thought that talking with her students would make it easier to teach descriptive text, and that the students thought the teacher was good at using questioning in the classroom can be found out.

Abstract

Critical thinking is always assumed to deal with critical reading and critical writing that also involve scientific materials. Critical thinking is also judged as the thinking skill limited to smart students only, since there are complicated problems involved, namely linguistic, psychological and cognitive problems. For students with such kinds of condition and situation, they need different materials and strategies adjusted to their characteristics to develop their critical thinking skills. This research showed that low achieving students of English as a foreign language (EFL) successfully improved their critical thinking skills after having activities of the poem interpretation and analysis activities in their Reading classes. This research also proved that when they align in pursuit of critical thinking by reading poems completed with the assignments. These lead the students to engage themselves not only in joyful learning activities of reading but also in training their thinking skills. They could perform interpreting and analysing poems with reasonable points of view. By having descriptive qualitative research for several months, there were crucial factors in optimizing the best performance of the low achieving students of EFL in thinking critically, namely well-designed lesson plans, peer-learning activities, and good teacher feedbacks.

Abstract

In the area of language, slang is a phenomena of employing linguistic variations that form as a result of language development and a social dynamic in society. In Indonesian, slang is known as bahasa gaul, and it is primarily utilized by young people while conversing with others. As a result, the purpose of this study is to examine the form, function, and meaning of existing slang, particularly as it is employed on social media. The data collection methods used in this study are qualitative. The information was gathered through observations of the usage of slang in various social media platforms, after which the slang was classed according to the type and construction of words. According to the findings of Allan and Burridge (2006), the forms of slang seen on social media are particularly diversified, creative, and dynamic, including Fresh and Creative, Flippant, Imitative, Acronyms, and Clipping.

Abstract

Pandemic Covid-19 changed various sectors including the force for the education sector to adjust and modify. This research focus to discover how EFL Teacher has adapted Hybrid Learning to become an implemented method in classes specifically, English Foreign Language (EFL) classes. This study used both quantitative and qualitative approaches to gain the teacher’s as well as students’ perspectives. As the struggles of EFL teachers and students in secondary school have been a concern before the pandemic, the discussion between secondary school teachers and students’ struggles during hybrid learning can be found in this study. This study discovers that teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards hybrid learning adjustment reflected what they need to modify during the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Deixis become an important function in oral communication. They can resolve confusion, ambiguity, and misunderstanding on meaning of utterances. Among the many formal communication forms, the speech of President Joko Widodo in G20 Summit closing event can become interesting to research in term of deixis study. This article investigates the type of deixis and what deixis is the most dominantly used in the speech of Joko Widodo at the G20 Summit closing. The data were described qualitatively by referring to Levinson. Using Miles and Huberman's interactive mode, the finding shows that among 47 of deixis used, person deixis was 25, temporal deixis 3, social deixis 14, and discourse deixis 5. Person deixis “I” was found to be the most dominant in the speech, which indeed conclude that President Joko Widodo showed himself the the holder of the mandate for holding the G20 Summit in Indonesia. Abstract

Speech acts are a rich category with several pragmatic phenomena that can be studied. The aims of this research are (i) to investigate the types of illocutionary acts and (ii) its functions of illocutionary acts in the short movie “The Translator”. This study used Searle's theory to classified the types of illocutionary act and Leech’s theory to classified the functions of illocutinary. The research method that researchers used was a qualitative descriptive method, because this research seeks to describe data objectively based on the data or facts found. The findings of this study indicated that (i) found 5 types of illocutionary speech acts in inter-player conversations in The Translator short movie, There are 4 assertive illocutionary data, 9 directive data, 13 expressive data, and 1 declarative data, so that the total number of data in the illocutionary type short film “The Translator” is 27 data, (ii) found 4 illocutionary functions in inter-player conversations in The Translator short movie, there are competitive functions is 5 data, convivial is 4 data, collaborative is 1 data and conflictive is 2 data.
