Abstract

In this investigation, the currents in Eastern Indonesian region are simulated by using the equations of motion (Navier-Stokes Equation). These equations are solved by the Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM). Two cases are carried out, i.e. in the condition of west monsoon (February 1994) and east monsoon (August 1994). The simulation results are discussed for surface current, currents at 100-200 m, and the bottom current. In general, the results obtained agrees well with the work of Wyrtki, 1961 and Ahmat et al., 1995, but less with the work of Gordon and McClean, 1999.

Abstract

There are several resulting arguments from the research done on climate variation in Indonesia stating that the observed affects are through various phenomena such as ENSO, monsoon, dipole mode event, and MJO. However, the magnitude of the effect varies for each region in Indonesia. This research aims to identify the relationship among the global climate features (GCFs) in the Nino3.4 (5°S–5°N, 120–170°W) with the local climate features (LCFs) in the Aceh regions which represented by: I(2–3°N, 95–98°E), II(3–4°N, 95–98°E), III(4–5°N, 95–98°E), and IV(5–6°N, 95–98°E) using canonical correlation analysis (CCA) in the ENSO phenomena. The analysis shows that global GCFs variations have strong correlation with LCFs variations with the correlation values, 0.893, 0.899, 0.900, and 0.901, respectively. The result show that when there is a global change in any feature of GCFs, the same change also appears in each feature of LCFs. The canonical loading shows that there are original variables which have strong correlation with the first canonical global variable (X1) with correlations 0.987, 0.969, 0.987, and 0.865,respectively, and the local wind (Y1) with correlations 0.974, 0.952, 0.979, and 0.845, respectively. All the other climate features have weak correlations with the first canonical variables. From the MANOVA, we can conclude that the climate features (wind, SST, SSTA, and SLP) affect climate changes in both study regions. Our results also reveal that LCFs are significantly affected in the Nino3.4 99.5% and in I, II, III, and IV for given correlations 99.8, 99.7, 99.6, and 99.5%, respectively.

Abstract

Variability of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the climatic features that influence global and regional climate dynamics. Missing data (gaps) in the SST dataset are worth investigating since they may statistically alter the value of the SST change. The partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach is used in this work to estimate the causality relationships between exogenous and endogenous latent variables. The findings of this study, which are significant indicators that have a loading factor value > 0.7 are as follows: i) sea surface temperature (oC) as a measure of the latent variable changes in SST, ii) wind speed (m/s) and relative humidity (%) as a measure of the latent variable of weather, and iii) air temperature (oC), long-wave solar radiation (w/m2) as a measure of climate latent variables. The size of the Rsquare value is influenced by the number of gaps. The results of the boostrapping show that the latent variables of weather and climate have a significant effect on changes in SST which are indicated by the value of tstatistics > ttabel. The structural model obtained Changes in SST (η) = -0.330 weather + 0.793 climate + ζ. The model shows that the weather has a negative coefficient, which means that the better the weather conditions, the lower the SST changes. Climate has a positive coefficient, which means that the better the climate, the SST changes will also increase. Rising sea surface temperatures caused by an increase in climate can lead to global warming, impacting El-Nino and La-Nina events.

Abstract

We investigated the sediment properties and distribution in Balohan Bay, which is located in southern Weh Island, Aceh Province. The aim of this research was to clarify the sediment distribution mechanism in the Balohan Bay using a statistical approach. Samples were collected on January 2016 using coring method. Sediment grain-size distribution from 14 stations was obtained using wet sieve analysis. A large amount of fine sand and very fine sand were found in Balohan Bay, as a result of several tributaries discharged in those areas. The sediment distribution in eastern stations showed an indication as a coarser size and a poorer sorted area, as they were adjacent to the steep cliff.

Abstract

Kata kunci : Kepiting bakau (Scylla serrata), keong mas (Pomacea canaliculata), ikan rucah dan usus ayamThe study of feed differences and feeding ration of mud crab (Scylla serrata) on the growth, and survival rate was done. The objective of the present study is to find alternative feeds and daily rations for mud crabculture. Field experimental was used in this study and two factors were evaluated namely type of feed (trash fish, chicken intestine and golden snail) and daily ration of 10%, 15% and 20%. The crabs were reared in poly ethylene cages with stocking density of 9 crabs /cage for six weeks. The result shows that the differences of feed types and daily rations were no significant affected on growth performance and survival rate of mudcrab. However, feed of trash fish 20% have resulted in a higher growth performance than other feeds and higher survival rates were found at feed of golden snail 10% and 15%. Therefore, it is concluded that goldensnail and chicken intestine are possible to be used as alternative feeds for mud crab culture. However trash fish is still play a vital role in crab culture.Key words: Mud crab (Scylla serrata), golden snail (Pomacea canaliculata), trash fish and chicken intestine.

Abstract

Climate change can create a considerable impact in Indonesia. Aceh province is a province located on the island of Sumatra and it are located around in the Indian Ocean. Aceh Province has a considerable impact of climate change caused by the Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA). The SSTA in the Indian Ocean is a parameter that can affect climatic conditions in Indonesia. The SSTA changes can cause an extreme climate change on earth. There are several climate elements affected by SSTA including air temperature, rainfall, wind speed, solar radiation, and relative humidity. One of the methods used to look at SSTA's relationship with some climate elements is the Cross-Correlation method. The climate data used in this study was a daily time series data. The purpose of this study is to find out SSTA's relationship with some climate elements. The results showed that using the Pearson correlation, the highest relationship was SSTA and the air temperature was 0.45. Meanwhile, the lowest relationship was SSTA and the rainfall was -0.05. Similarly, the Cross-Correlation method where the highest relationship was SSTA and the air temperature was 0.469, and the lowest close relationship was SSTA and the rainfall was -0.075.

Abstract

Indonesia has abundant underwater natural resources, including coral reefs. Among coral reef ecosystems, reef fish make an important contribution to supporting the sustainability of underwater life. The more diverse reef fish in an ecosystem, it shows the healthier the condition of the coral reef ecosystem. The objective of the study was to investigate the diversity of the reef fish community including abundance, diversity, evenness, and dominance index in Ulee Kareung waters, Simpang Mamplam Sub-district, Bireuen District, Indonesia. We used a visual census technique (VCT)-belt transect by using a 50-meter transect and 3 times repetition at three observation stations. Each station had 2 depth categories such as shallow waters (3-5 m) and deep water (7-10 m). Results of the study found a total of 2094 individuals that consisted of 19 families and 59 species. The abundance value of reef fish ranged from 321 ind/ha - 610 ind/ha. The diversity index (H') ranged from 2.80 to 3.16. The evenness index (E) ranged from 0.79 to 0.88 and the dominance index (C) ranged from 0.06 to 0.10. Hence, it can be concluded that ulee kareung waters have a medium level of fish diversity.
