Abstract

Research on the reproductive biology of fish can provide information on spawning frequency, spawning success, spawning time, and size at first maturity. This research aimed to determine the reproductive biology of common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758) landed at the fish landing site (PPI) Kedonganan, Badung, Bali. Sampling was conducted in May - September 2018. A total of 42 female common dolphinfish with length ranged between 41-110 cm FL were obtained from hand-line fishery based on FADs. Ovaries were prepared using the paraffin method and Harris Haematoxylin-Eosin staining for histological observation. The results showed that the gonad maturity level in adult females was: spawning (38.10%), spawning capable (35.71%), regressing-potentially reproductive (4.76%), regressed 1 (2.38%), regressed 2 (2.38%), and regenerating (2.38%). Immature female: immature (9.52%) and developing (4.76%). Oocyte diameter ranged between 43,20 – 864,66 µm with an average of 430,99 µm. Fecundity in fish size 49-75 cm FL ranged from 30,720-433,080 eggs / fish with an average of 129,594 eggs / fish. The difference in the level of oocytes in the ovaries at the same time showed that female common dolphinfish in the southern Bali waters has an asynchronous ovary development and indeterminant fecundity with multiple spawning strategies and size at first maturity (Lm50) was 43.2 cm FL. Keywords: common dolphinfish, gonad histology, size at maturity

Abstract

This study aims to determine the side effects of high-dose injections of vitamin C in a long term against liver histology. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with different long treatments of vitamin C injection in various doses of P0 (control), P1 (30 days injection), P2 (50 days injection), P3 (70 days injection) and P4 (90 days injection). Parameters measured were plasma levels of SGPT and SGOT, the percentage of hydropic degeneration,  fatty degeneration, pyknotik nuclei, and necrosis of liver cells, and also inflammatory cell infiltration and sinusoid congestion. SGOT levels showed a significant differences (P=0,009) between the treatment and control group by ANOVA test. The Kruskal Wallis test showed that ALT levels were not significantly different (P=0,86), however, the levels of creatinine showed significant differences (P=0,002). The hydropic degeneration were not significantly different (P=0,054) by Kruskal Wallis test, whereas the fatty degeneration were significantly different (P=0,000) between the treatment and control groups by ANOVA test. Pyknotik nuclei and necrotic cells showed significant differences between the control and treatment with the P value of 0,016 and 0,01 respetively. The injected white vitamin C in high doses for long periods decreased the physiological functions of female mice liver.

Abstract

The pituitary gland of broiler chickens (Gallus sp.) is empirically known to have gonadotropins to accelerate ovulation in fish. This research was conducted to determine the reproductive performance and survival of sangkuriang catfish (Clarias sp.) Larvae of adult male and female mature gonads by 20 pairs. This study used a Completely Randomized Design consisting of 4 treatments and 5 replications to obtain 20 experimental units. Doses of pituitary extract used is without injection of pituitary chicken pituitary extract (P0), injection of pituitary chicken pituitary extract with a dose of 600 mg/kgbb (P1), 900 mg/kgbb (P2) and 1200 mg/kgbb sangkuriang catfish (P3). Intramuscular injection of extracts in the ventral dorsal fin with a volume of 0.5 mL/kgbb. Descriptive data analysis for gonad maturity level, ovulation response, egg performance. Statistical analysis of data for morphometric aspects using the Wilcoxon test, for latency time, relative fecundity, fertilization success, hatching success, and larval survival aspects using One Way Anova using SPSS version 25. The results of statistical analysis showed significant differences in reproductive performance (relative latency and fecundity time), successful fertilization and successful hatching of eggs, but there was no significant difference in survival (number of live larvae, length and weight) larvae of sangkuriang catfish (Clarias sp.). Broiler chicken pituitary extract (Gallus sp.) can improve reproductive performance, fertilization and hatching success but does not affect egg performance and survival of sangkuriang catfish (Clarias sp.) larvae. Abstract

Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is a food preservative that is often added to processed meat products. Excessive consumption of NaNO2 can be detrimental to health. One effort to minimize the negative effects caused by NaNO2 is by consuming antioxidants. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Eucheuma cotonii seaweed extract on improving blood profile, liver and kidney function in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by NaNO2. This research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two control groups and three treatment groups. Each group consists of six replications. Negative control (K-) receive aquades and CMC NA 0,5%. Positive control (K +) was only received 22.5 mg/kgBW NaNO2 for 35 days then on the day 36 until the day 45 only given 0,5% CMC Na. The treatment groups P1, P2, and P3 respectively on day 1 to day 15, only received 22.5 mg/kgBW NaNO2 in the morning, and then day 16 to day 35 received 22.5 mg/kgBW NaNO2 in the morning and received 150 mg/kgBW (P1), 300 mg/kgBW (P2), 450 mg/kgBW (P3) Eucheuma cottoni seaweed extract in the evening. Day 30 to day 45, the treatment groups only received Eucheuma cottoni seaweed extracts at each dose. Blood and liver were collected on day 46. Data analysis of serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) enzyme levels and liver histology were performed with Anova statistical test and continued with Duncan post hoc test. The results showed Eucheuma cottonii extract dose of 150 mg / kgBB significantly reduced the level of liver damage seen from the levels of ALT and AST and liver histology (percentage inflammatory cell infiltration, congestion, fatty degeneration and necrosis) in white rats induced by sodium nitrite (NaNO2). Abstract

This experiment was performed to examine the effects of young pineapple (Ananas comosus) fruitextract on reproduction performance and foetus skeletal development given during organogenesis period.Twenty pregnant mice were randomly divided into four groups. The young pineapple fruit extract wastreated orally by gavage with doses 0% (control), 20%, 40%, and 80% since gestation day 6 to 15. Caesareansection were performed to pregnant mice on day 18 to remove foetuses. Observation covered : reproductionperformance (uterine weight before and after foetus removal), the foetus number (reabsorptions, dead/alive foetus), morphological of the foetus (weight and length of the litter, and malformations), and skeletaldevelopment (ossification number of metacarpus, metatarsus, vertebrae caudalis) and malformations ofcostae, sternebrae, and vertebrae. Statistical analysis was performed using Anova and Duncan’s MultipleRange Test.Teratogenic effects caused decreasing of earlier uterine weight and alive foetus, increasingdead foetus and hemorrhage, delayed skeletal ossification (decreasing ossification number of metacarpusand metatarsus) and caused costal malformation (intercostal fusion and convulated costal structure).Young pineapple fruit extract given to pregnant mice during organogenesis alter reproductive performancepregnant mice. The extract also caused morphological abnormalities (cretinism), hemorrhage, delayedossification on metacarpus and metatarsus, and costae malformation of the foetus.

Abstract

Calliandra calothyrsus leaf contains 17-28% protein which is hihly potential for use as source of protein supplement for animal feed. However, the plants also contain high level (>10%) of condensed tannins as antinutritional effects which may reduce consumtion efficiency of diet. The addition of protease (bromelain) into feed containing tannin is expected to decrease the negative effects of tannins. Bromelain can be obtained from the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus) including on the peels. This study was conducted to determine the effect of calliandra tannin combined with bromelain protease of pineapple peels in the feed on testicular histology and testosterone level of rats feeded during the growth period. The feeding experiment on post-weaning male rats was conducted using a completely randomized factorial design (4 main factors x 4 subfactors). The main factors were calliandra leaf meal substitution of 0; 10; 17.5 and 25% in the diets and subfactors were addition of pineapple peels, 0; 4.35; 8.70 and 13.05 g/rat/day. Rats were divided into 16 groups and were feeded the diets for two months (during the growth period). The results showed the susbtituion of feed with calliandra leaf had no sigbnificant effecton the thickness of the seminiferous tubules, but it appeared to have significant effect on the histology of seminiferous tubules. Increased pineapple peels level in the diets containing calliandra decreased wall thickness of the seminiferous tubules of the rat testes, indicating that bromalein fastened the maturation of spermatozoa. The addition of pineapple peels into the diet containing calliandra had a significant interaction effect on testoteron levels of male rats, but the testoteron levels among all treated rats were still within the normal range.

Abstract

Fish cultures in rice fields or areas that use water from a pesticide-polluted irrigation or river, are particularly vulnerable to the negative impact of pesticides. This study aims to assess the effect of organophosphates on growth, ovarian histopathology and fecundity of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). After acclimatization, 160 fishes (fingerlink stage) were kept in four ponds sized 2x1,5x0,8 m each. This study used a complete randomized block design and organophosphate administration through the feed. The study used four groups: control, and variations in dose of 2 ml (D1), 6 ml (D2), and 10 ml (D3) of pesticide per 100 grams of pellet, which is given in the morning (treatment) and in the evening (regular feed). Data were taken at week 3, 6, and 9, then the organophosphate treatments were stopped, and the last data were taken at week-18. Statistical analysis was performed by Anova and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the organophosphate pesticide inhibits the growth by reducing fish length and weight, reducing ovarian weight, increasing the number of oocyte atresia, damaging structure of the ovarian histology, and decreasing fecundity by reducing the number of egg production in the ovarian of red tilapia.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The difference in height and weight is influenced by genetic traits and environmental factors. The study population was primary school children from one elementary school in the area of Pinang Sebatang Timur Village, Tualang Regency and one elementary school in urban areas covering Pekanbaru City. The two research areas are located in the province of Riau. The research sample was 60 students from Nusantara elementary school in Pinang Sebatang Timur Village and 60 students from Santa Maria elementary school, which consisted of (30 boys and 30 girls). The age range of the probandous is about 10-12 years old. The method that is being used for the research is purposive sampling method using online survey. The parameters studied were height, weight, age, parental education, parental occupation, parental income, body mass index (BMI), age of manarche and first wet dreams. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated by dividing body weight (kg) by height square (m2).According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, BMI is categorized based on 4 categories, namely underweight (<18), normal (18-25), overweight (25-27), and obese (>27). The average of heights, weights and body mass indexes of male and female students in Pekanbaru city are higher than in the Pinang Sebatang Timur’s village. Factors that are affecting student’s heights and weights are their parent’s job, their parent’s allowances, heights, the age of menarche on the female children or wet dream on the male children, and also the physical activities the students do. Keywords: Growing pattern, height, weight, age, Body Mass Index (BMI)
