Abstract

This research contains an analysis of the use of British and American English on writing skills on student accounts of the Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto University (UNU Purwokerto). The purpose of this study was to determine the British English and American English vocabularies used by students in developing writing skills. This study uses a qualitative approach using descriptive analysis methods. The sampling technique was carried out by means of purposive sampling of the captions used for English writing practice. The Instagram account analyzed was the Instagram account of the Purwokerto Nahdlatul Ulama University students. The accounts analyzed were 50 students accounts. The results of this study are first, the researcher will record the vocabulary contained in the results of English Writing on the Instagram account and classify British and American English. So that we can understand the differences between British English and American English in the captions on students' Instagram. Second, the researcher will analyze writing skills regarding the suitability of grammatical with sentence context. Third, that this research can be used as a reference for British and American English knowledge that supports the process of developing English writing skills.

Abstract

Today, the hegemony of American popular culture products is increasingly endemic throughout the world. Therefore, students who in fact live in Islamic boarding schools are expected to be able to use the popular culture, especially YouTube, positively. So that it can be useful for himself and others. This short documentary will be applied at Islamic Boarding School and the results will be published via YouTube. The purpose of this study was to apply the making of a short documentary film at Islamic boarding school as a media for English-language expression. As well as its influence on English Speaking. This research uses a qualitative approach using the method of "reception or aesthetic studies". With this method, students as audience become the main actors in making documentary film in Islamic Boarding Schools. The results of this study are that in the midst of the onslaught of American popular culture, students must actively participate in utilizing popular culture products, especially YouTube. Students can play a role and practice directly in making documentary short film in Islamic Boarding Schools. The short film was uploaded on YouTube. The direct participation of the students will certainly affect the students' speaking ability. This is influenced by the stages that involve the role of students actively and directly. An example is the process of determining themes and titles that are adapted to the activities of the students, then followed by writing and composing English dialogue. After the dialogue was arranged, students practiced speaking and expression according to the context of the dialogue in the documentary short film at Islamic Boarding School. The existence of Islamic Boarding School become more active in the digital era.

Abstract

KPop has fast developing into a global phenomenon almost all over the world. Kpop became a virus that spreads in the world of music and entertainment and even has to be able to compete with western music and rule the world charts. Among other social media, Twitter has received a lot of attention from Kpopers. English plays an important role in communicating among Kpop communities on Twitter. Kpop tweets become effective learning tools to improve English skill of Kpopers. Many of Kpopers use Twitter platform to post their thoughts or comments as well as get information in English. In addition, they also often interact with fellow Kpop fans abroad using English. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to analyze English language learning in Kpoper’s activities on Twitter, especially in the case of grammatical error in Kpop Tweet. The error analysis determines possible causes of the errors and the implication of the errors committed to language teaching and learning. Findings revealed that most errors were seen within the category of omission of helping verb, subject and punctuation or apostrophe. It was followed by tenses, subject-verb agreement and the use of part of speech and question order on the second until fifth ranks consecutively. The researcher focused more on taking data from Kpoper who use English as EFL (English as a foreign language). It was taken from Kpop Tweets randomly with various topics by screenshooting. Data analysis is carried out with a descriptive qualitative method, focused on finding the nature of the particular event on study.

Abstract

The research contains the analysis of the use of Wattpad  for  practicing  a fiction writing  as an alternative learning media and method to improve the students’ writing skills, It was conducted  in English Language Teaching Department, UNU Purwokert by taking 37 students as research object. This study used mix method approach by using qualitative and quantitative. Data collection was carried out  by purposive sampling where researchers collected data through pre-test and post-test, questionnaires and interview to 37 students. It aimed to perceive the improvement of students’ writing skill, the students’ perception about Wattpad in building writing habit, interest, motivation and confidence in writing. The result of study showed there are improvements in writing skill after treatment mainly in idea/imagination development, organization such as building plot, characterizations and conflict. For grammar wise, it showed the improvement in vocabulary, part of speech and tenses, The activity also stimulates students' motivation and confidence to learn English, especially in terms of writing. It affects to the classroom atmosphere between lecturers and students because the class becomes more lively and interactive.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a hereditary disease caused by abnormalities in red blood cells in which the individual has a gene disorder that causes reduced production of hemoglobin in red blood cells. People with Thalassemia, especially the type of Thalassemia Major, need routine therapy and medication. These routine therapy and medication activities sometimes cause various problems and obstacles in the lives of people with thalassemia both physically and psychologically. Individuals with thalassemia also show impaired psychosocial and school functioning. The desire and enthusiasm for learning decreased, giving rise to human resources with low educational backgrounds. The lack of education especially the knowledge of health terms in English is one of the problems. The program of English Injection for Thalassemia intended to create an English learning space for people with Thalassemia. English Injection for Thalassemia aimed to provide English education, especially information about medical terms which are important in the treatment of thalassemia. The object of the program is the members of the Association of Indonesian Thalassemia Patients, commonly called PPTI Banyumas. The method of implementing this program was used fun learning methods and media. It provided English training in groups through indoor and outdoor activities with basic English expressions and English medical terms for Thalassemia

Abstract

This research contains an analysis of grammatical differences in British and American English in the students’ Instagram accounts of the Nahdlatul Ulama University of Purwokerto (UNU Purwokerto). The purpose of this study was grammatical differences in British and American English that were used by students in developing writing skills. Abstract

This was a descriptive research project. The goal of this study was to find out how well students could write descriptive texts. The goal is to evaluate the pupils' abilities to write descriptive material. The study looked at five aspects of the students' writing. They're working on formulating ideas, organizing them, using syntax, vocabulary, and mechanics. In addition, there are five categories in which students' writing might be evaluated. Excellent, good, satisfactory, weak, and poor are the four options. The findings of this study concern text composition, the difficulty of performing well-organized writing, the processing of writing order, and language selection. They write the words that aren't appropriate. They use words that are inappropriate for the circumstance. It's all about the grammar here. The kids were grammatically correct. That is the present tense in its simplest form. The students can also put mechanics together well. In their writing, they are things like punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. It occurred as a result of the students' own lack of effort. The kids are aware of the rules of writing, but they are unable to apply them. As a result, the students' writing skills are still lacking.

Abstract

Everyone has an Instagram account in this digital age. Lecturers use Instagram as a medium for developing English language teaching. The lecturer asked the students to write their ideas in English on Instagram caption. This study presents an analysis of English skills in teaching English online through the use of Instagram in the New Normal era of Covid-19. The data will be analyzed using quantitative and qualitative research standards. The first data of this quantitative study was taken from the Survey through a questionnaire. Survey is a procedure in quantitative research that involves the use of a questionnaire to explore population characteristics, attitudes, behaviors, and opinions. Then, the researcher used qualitative research to serve the results of the interview data. The results of this study are first, that English skills are dominant in teaching English online. Second, students' perceptions of English language skills that are difficult to develop in online teaching through the use of Instagram in the new normal era of covid-19. Third, Instagram is a media solution for teaching English online for students.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most challenging skills in learning English. Many obstacles are faced when learning to speak, such as lack of motivation, fear of making mistakes, and lack of self-confidence. These problems are often found during the teaching and learning process in the classroom. A teacher is expected to continue innovating for exciting and fun learning methods and media to increase learning interest, motivation, confidence, and creativity in speaking. It is needed not only in the classroom but also in independent learning. This study aims to discover students' perception of the learning process for their speaking skills through using vlogs as a self-learning media and the effect of using vlogs on students' motivation, confidence and creativity. The researcher took the research object of the English Language Teaching Department students in UNU Purwokerto. The data were obtained by giving a speaking project as a vlog with a specific theme. Data collection was conducted by providing questionnaires and interviews to find out students' perceptions about the effect of using vlogs for the improvement of motivation, confidence and creativity and also observing the students' vlogs to find out the learning process of speaking from the aspect of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Data analysis is qualitative descriptive with theories from Dulay and Fromkin (1982). This study found that based on students' perceptions, they agreed that using vlogs improved their motivation, confidence and creativity. Meanwhile, based on the observation, it was found that there were some pronunciation errors and grammar mistakes in the students' speaking, but they showed improvement in choosing vocabulary. Some students used a variety of vocabularies that were rarely used in the class.
