Abstract

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to know the incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED) after transurethral resections of the prostate (TURP) and transvesical prostatectomy (TVP). Material & method: Data were collected in 1 year period from January until December 2005 with cross sectional study design. There were 60 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and patient who participated in this study underwent TURP and TVP and divided in TURP group and TVP group. Erectile Dysfunction measured by International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) data was analyzed by statistic chi-square and independent t-test. Results: Sixty patients include this study with 30 patients in each group. The mean age of TURP was 64 ± 5,68 and TVP was 63,23 ± 4,83 with age ranging from 50 – 70 years. The incidence of ED after TURP and TVP was 36,67% and 16,70% respectively with p = 0,08. The IIEF-5 scores for TURP and TVP was 19,40 ± 3,95 and 21,03 ± 2,57 respectively and by statistical analysis the differences was not significant. Conclusion: The incidence of ED after TURP showed higher than TVP and by statistical analysis the differences was not significant. Keywords: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, transurethral resection of the prostate, transvesical prostatectomy.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the dysfunction rate of Tenckhoff catheter insertion for end stage renal disease patients at Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta. Material & method: Data were collected from medical record retrospectively for all chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients underwent continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), by open surgery at Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta, from January 2010 until Desember 2013. The cause of CKD and dysfunction rate was studied. Data was analyzed using SPSS ver 18.0 (IBM corp, USA). Results: There were 43 CKD patients underwent Tenckhoff cateter placement using open surgery. Tenckhoff catheter dysfunction was found in 11.7% patients. Disfunction was caused by blockage of the catheter by omentum (6.9%) and catheter migration (4.8%). Peritonitis complication was found in 2.3% patients. The cause of CKD at Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta was diabetes mellitus (53.5%), hypertension (44.2%), and glomerulonefritis (2.3%). There were no correlation of dysfunction rate with gender and the cause of CKD. Conclusion: Tenckhoff catheter placement by open surgery at Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta have good outcome.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the epithelial cell counts in each lobe of prostate glands with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Material and methods: Twenty-two BPH patients who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in Diponegoro Dua Satu Surgery Hospital Klaten, from May until November 2006 were enrolled in this study. Tissue from each lobe of the prostate gland was separately collected, from the middle (A), left lateral (B), right lateral lobes (C). All samples were fixed in 10% formalin buffer, embedded in paraffin and sectioned in 4 micrometer slices with microtome. After hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining, number of epithelial cells was counted under light microscopy. Difference in epithelial cell counts in each alveolus between the three lobes was statistically analyzed using t-test (p<0,05). Results: Twenty-two patients were included in this study from May to November 2006, mean age was 66,64±7,6 (54-88) years old. The most common occupation was farmer. Almost all patients had symptoms of chronic urinary retention (95,45%). Length of hospital stay was 8,77±2,7 (6-17) days, mean weight of prostate resected was 47,05±23,2 (5-90) grams, mean operative time 77,73±22,24 (45-115) minute, mean volume of irrigation fluid (sterile water) was 24,18±7,87 (5-34) liter. Mean number of cells in groups A, B, and C were 23,67±8,4 (13,6-44,4), 29,22±8,8 (16,4-41,2), and 29,11±8,7 (16,4-41,2) respectively. There was significant difference between groups A and B, and between groups A and C (p<0,05) respectively. Conclusion: There was statistically significant difference in epithelial cell count between the middle lobes compared to lateral lobes of the prostate in BPH surgical samples. These findings are supported by cystoscopic observation of smaller middle lobe compared to the lateral lobes in BPH.
