Abstract

This study deals with authorial and non-authorial affect in speech. The aim is to find out the types of affect, graduation and engagement. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained through content analysis from speech transcript. The data was analyzed by using domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis. The result shows that there are 10 types of affects found in authorial affect, 13 types of affects found in non-authorial affect, and 10 types of affects found in authorial-non-authorial affect. Authorial affects and combinations are used more frequently than non-authorial It indicates that the speaker as first person often expresses his/her own feelings and also expresses his/her and others’ feeling upon something.

Abstract

The ability to speak English is an obligation in the era of globalization. However, there are still many phenomena where English proficiency is still considered low, especially for the class of society who still considers English a difficulty. Community service is carried out to invite the community back about English and things that help to improve English language skills. The results show that the importance of English has been fully realized but the obstacle lies in the approach used to improve English language skills. An introduction to the importance of the number of vocabularies is introduced to help improve English language skills. This is important to do as a form of step that can be used to improve and invite the community (especially school children who live in the community) to determine the right steps.

Abstract

Language awareness is a term that can help students use and learn English better. Language awareness that is owned will help motivate when someone learns a language. However, English as EFL (English as Foreign Language) in Indonesia presents a challenge to students who have minimal exposure to English. This community service aims to promote language awareness by using activities such as the interactive Fun Listening Activity. Respondents in this activity were parents of school students. The evaluation of this activity was considered good and enthusiastic parents could get ideas for a fun way of learning English for their children. After the community service activities were completed in the form of counseling, it can be concluded that respondents who took part in the activities were able to get new and fun ideas while learning English.

Abstract

Recent studies on appraisals signifies the continuous development to delve further on appraisals theory. Like previous studies, this study focuses on one of aspects in appraisals called affect. The main concern is to study the authorial and non-authorial, authorial-non authorial affect in speech. The aims are to find out the types of affect used and its relation with speakers’ intentionand also the graduation shift that occurs in its Indonesian translation. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained through content analysis and were analyzed by using domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis. The result of this study shows that the amount of authorial-non authorial affect is higher than the amount of authorial and non-authorial affect. In relation to translation study, it is also found that there are 10 graduation shifts that occur in in the target text caused by translation techniques. The study implicates that the speeches mainly used authorial-non authorial affect to shows that the speakers and audience are on the same page on certain issues and the graduation shifts in target text change the affect perceived by the target readers.

Abstract

Kesadaran berbahasa adalah sikap manusia yang bertanggung jawab baik secara pribadi maupun kolektif untuk menciptakan rasa saling memiliki bahasa. Communication excellence merupakan kebutuhan yang meningkat seiring dengan tekad seseorang untuk mengikuti perkembangan teknologi dan waktu. Untuk penelitian ini peneliti mengambil sampel perawat yang bertugas di RS Arosuka Sumatera Barat. Data akan dikumpulkan dengan memberikan kuesioner kepada perawat yang diambil sebagai sampel penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perawat di rumah sakit menyadari sepenuhnya bahwa kemampuan berbahasa Inggris merupakan syarat penting bagi mereka. Namun, perawat jarang menggunakan bahasa Inggris di tempat kerja. Alasan yang diberikan adalah kondisi atau situasi langka yang mengharuskan perawat menggunakan bahasa Inggris di tempat kerja. Sebaliknya, sebagian besar responden menunjukkan antusiasme yang besar terhadap pelatihan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris jika pelatihan diadakan di rumah sakit.
