Abstract

The two-season researches in Gua Jauharlin 1 site were carried out in 2018 and 2019. A human skeleton, sans its lower limbs, was discovered during the second season of excavation and coded GJL 1.1. However, a pair of human leg bones were found close to the cranium of GJL 1.1, which was suggested to belong to the individual of GJL 1.1. The research objective was to determine the identity of the GJL 1.1 in association with its individual attribute and the analysis of its burial context. This study uses a macroscopic analysis method to obtain individual data of GJL 1.1, as well as an archeothanatology approach to analyse the burial context. The macroscopic analysis yielded information on the biological profile of GJL 1.11 suggesting the individual is male, aged 26.9-42.5 years, height 155.1-165 cm, and has an affiliation with the Asian population. The brownish-yellow stain on the labial and buccal surface of human teeth of GJL 1.1 indicate betel nut chewing. The result of archeothanatological analysis suggests the architecture of the burial of GJL 1.1 with regard to laying-covering corpses and a primary burial. The results of the short tandem repeat combined deoxyribonucleic acid index system (STR CODIS) test, using samples from a pair of leg bones and the GJL 1.1 skeleton, indicate that the two came from different individuals.

The excavation findings analyses are quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative analysis was carried out to find out the quantity of findings. The qualitative analysis includes an initial classification, which divides archeological data according to the type, form and style. The results show that Batu Cave are cave dwelling with living activities that rely on the surrounding resources. Exploitation of environmental resources is seen in the use of several types of terrestrial fauna and water as one of the main food sources. Abstract

. The historiography of Kotawaringin Barat Regency cannot be separated from the existence of the 17th-19th century Kotawaringin Kingdom. The Kotawaringin kingdom grew and developed as a multi-ethnic region of Bugis, Dayak and Javanese. Some of the cultural resources of the Kotawaringin Kingdom, in Kotawaringin Lama, which still exists are the Astana Al-Nursari, the Kuta Tanah Cemetery, Kyai Gede Mosque, and the Masoraian Lake. The interview results suggest that Astana Al-Nursari will be developed into a museum that integrates with the other three cultural resources. The development plan was initiated by descendants of the Kotawaringin Kingdom, supported by the Regency Government of Kotawaringin Barat. However, until today research on the cultural resources of the Kotawaringin Kingdom, which is the first step in this development plan, is still limited to studying the historical aspects of the Kotawaringin Kingdom. This research is aimed at understanding the important value of the cultural resources of the Kotawaringin Kingdom based on current actual conditions. The understanding of these important values is expected to enable the depiction of the characteristics and potential of Kotawaringin Barat which can become the basis for cultural resources management of the Kotawaringin Kingdom. The results show that the cultural resources of Kotawaringin Lama, in Central Kalimantan, have important values that can become the foundation for the management of the cultural heritage region which is integrated with geoconservation. The integration of the management of the two protected areas is a first step before these regions can practically be used to improve people's welfare, especially the people living around the area and Indonesia in general.
