Abstract

Abstract

The essence of the implementation of the “Ngaben Massal” ceremony, is a deconstruction of hegemonic discourse in society, a deconstruction of the hegemonic tradition in the Ngaben discourse, starting from the rise of philosophical public awareness starting from the clearer understanding of society in religious literature. From this understanding, other reinterpretations emerge, such as reinterpretation of the meaning of economy, social solidarity and education. This reinterpretation of the meaning of the Ngaben ceremony is a very important basis for appreciation so that mass Ngaben can be widely accepted in most community groups. The implementation of the above is very important that can be grown in the implementation of the Mass Ngaben Ceremony, as a medium of education, is the emergence of public awareness of the essential values ??of a yajna ceremony such as the Ngaben Ceremony itself. So that the essential value of a yajña ceremony (Ngaben) is no longer buried by the routine of a tradition, which is nothing more than a traditional obligation which can give the impression that a yajñas ceremony like Ngaben with the hegemonic tradition is just a burden of tradition that is independent of its essence and meaning. The aim of this research is to analyze the use of deixis in Donald Trump’s speech. The descriptive qualitative method was used in analyzing the data found in this research. The collected data were analysed by observing how the deixis was used in sentences. In analyzing the data, Levinson’s (1983) theory about different usages of deixis was applied. Based on Levinson's theory of deixis usages, deixis can be used through a gestural, symbolic, and non-deictic way. This research found three ways of deixis usages in Donald Trump’s speech, namely gestural, symbolic, and non-deictic use. Symbolic way of deixis usage was the most frequent occurrence, that is 82 times. This finding was followed by the non-deictic usage which occurred 6 times, and gestural usage that occurred 3 times. By investigating the usage of deixis, this study is expected to give an understanding that in delivering a speech, deixis can be used in different ways to support the content meant to be shared by the speaker as well as to make effective message delivery.

Abstract

The research focuses on the analysis of category shift in the movie of Joker (2019). This study has two aims, namely (1) to identify the types of category shifts that appear in the English-Indonesian translation of Joker (2019) movie and (2) to describe the use of category shifts of Joker (2019) movie texts on transferring messages from the source language into the target language. Descriptive qualitative method was used in study to analyze the data. In this study, Catford's (1965) theory of translation shifts was applied. The data source of this study was the Joker (2019) movie by Todd Phillips in English with Indonesian subtitles. Observation and documentation method were applied in collecting the data. The subtitle of the film was the object of the observation. The results showed that all types of category shifts presented by Catford were found in the translation. The structure shift occurred in the highest occurrence, consisting of 46 data (43,40%) out of the 106 data. It appeared because there were different classes and functions of the word between English into Indonesian. The fewest occurrence was class shift consisting of 17 data (16,03%). The majority of the class shifts discovered in this study is shifts from noun to a verb. Unit shift occurred 24 cases (22,65%). Most of the unit shifts found in the source language were transferred from words to phrases in the target language and intra-system shift occurred 19 data (17,92%) from the total of 106 data found. This shift was represented by the plural forms in English that were mostly translated into singular forms in Indonesian because, as it can be seen in the translation, the markers of plural quantifier were followed by the singular noun in Indonesian. The plural forms were shown by the use of them in the noun phrases.
