Abstract

The aim of this research were to determine antigenicity, sensitivity, and specificity of Toxocara canisprotein used as antigen in indirect-ELISA for the detection antibody against the worm in the infected hostin order to proper diagnose kit. The design used was true experimental, with Post-test Only ControlGroups Design. Mouse was immunized with various worm homogenates used to antigenicity, sensitivityand specificity tests of T. canis protein with indirect-ELISA technique. The independence variable werevarious immunogens (homogenates); the dependence variables were antigenicity, sensitivity and specificityvalues interpreted by optical density (OD) value of mouse sera; and controlled variable were mouse strain, feed and retrieval time of sera. The result showed that OD values of mouse sera immunized with T. canisand T.cati homogenate were signicantly difference (p<0.01) as compared to those immunized withAncylostoma spp., Dipylidium caninum and control sera. Using the diagnosis based on the finding ofToxocara, the sensitivity of OD value by ELISA result from mouse sera immunized with Toxocara spp.homogenate were 100%. Using negative OD value by ELISA from mouse sera immunized with Ancylostomaspp. and D. caninum homogenate, the specificity of the test was 87.5%. In conclusion, protein of T.canishas the same antigenicity against anti-T. canis and anti-T. cati sera, but they had the lower antigenicityagainst anti-Ancylostoma spp. and anti-D.caninum sera. As the sensitivity value of 100% and specificityvalue of 87.5%, in detecting antibody against toxocariasis, the possibility of obtaining false positive was12.5%.

Abstract

Katuk (Sauropus androgynus L Merr) is known to contain carotenoids, vitamin E, vitamin C, protein and phytosterol compound. This study was aimed to determine the ability of phytosterols in Sauropus androgynus (SA) leaf to obtain poultry product that has low cholesterol content. One hundred fifty female quails were raised from 2-27 weeks old, divided into three treatment diets, five replicates with 10 quails in each replicate. The treatment diets were: 1) Control group: diet without katuk leaf meal; 2) Diet with 9% SA ethanol 70% extract (SAE); 3) Diet containing 9% SA meal (SAM). Kolesterols were determined with CHOD-PAP-Method by Human, there is enzymatic Colorimetric Test for Cholesterol with Lipid Clearing Factor. The result showed that total cholesterol in the egg yolk, carcass and liver of SAE and SAM treated quails were lower (P<0.05) than that of the control-treated quails, except the cholesterol content in the serum. These findings indicated that the cholesterol concentration of female quails was decreased due to phytosterol content in katuk leaf. Key Words: Phytosterol, Katuk Leaf, Kolesterol, Quails

Abstract

Social capital is social energy in a community used to actuate a farmer group to be more dynamic to gain an end. Social capital cannot be formed by farmers individually, but it extremely depends on farmer group’s capacity and government to build trust, norms and social networks. Qualitative method is used in this research. The data collection is completed by using triangulation including non-participant observation, interview in depth, and documentation. The approach used is a case study that is to study the role of social capital in improving the dynamics of the Orange farmer group Sidomulyo IV, Sidomulyo village, Umbulsari subdistrict, Jember regency. The study results show that the members’ trust toward the farmer group Sidomulyo IV motivates their members to work together and to actively participate in the community’s activities to achieve their goals, so that their group becomes more dynamic. Cooperation creates the norms for the farmer group including the meeting schedule, the cash collection, the facility utilization, government help administration, and pest and disease management. It also builds social networks to fulfill the members’ needs involving the official kiosks of production utilities, gapoktan (farmer group alliance), government, Orange traders, and Hippa (association of waterusing farmers). Counseling activity through SL program (field school) also can increase farmer group’s social capital.

Abstract

Wastewater vehicle washing that discharged directly into water bodies can increase pollution levels. Wastewater treatment of small-scale vehicle washing businesses must be efficient, no need large areas, easy to operate and economical. The alternative technology is using simple wastewater filtration system. Banana stems can be used for filter media. Previous studies mention banana stems have cellulose content and have high hygroscopic ability. High cellulose content allows the potential to be used as an absorbent media. Hygroscopic properties are useful for absorbing harmful inorganic chemicals. The study was conducted by making a filtration reactor using banana stem filter media with a variation of residence time and filter media thickness. Sample testing by analyzing COD, TSS and Detergent parameters. The test results significant decrease in TSS and detergent parameters. The highest percentage decrease in TSS reached 91% and detergent 96%. COD decreased during the filtration treatment directly, but after that increased with the length of duration. This is due to biological influence and the high percentage of organic matter and biomass of banana stems. It can be concluded that the banana stem potential as a filter media for direct wastewater treatment and effective in reducing TSS and detergents for washing vehicles wastewater.

Abstract

Nutrition knowledge is principal issues related to various nutritional problems that occur in Indonesia. Maternal role in children’s growth and development is very dominant, that is in caring for and educating them. Parenting patterns applied by the mother can affect the growth of the children, especially the nutritional status. Goals to be achieved in this study are: 1) to inquire nutrition and health knowledge of mothers with malnutrition children; 2) to examine food and health parenting pattern applied by mothers with malnutrition children and 3 ) to analyze the relationship between nutrition and health knowledge and parenting pattern implemented by the mother. The method used in this study is the Cross-Sectional. The results show that more than half of mothers’ nutrition and health knowledge is in medium category. More than half of mothers’ food parenting pattern is in fairly good category. Whereas, mothers’ health parenting pattern is in good category. Toddlers’ nutritional status, as measured using anthropometry, is generally in normal category. Spearman correlation test results state that there is a positive and significant relationship, and thus it can be concluded that the higher the mother's nutrition knowledge score, the better the food parenting pattern.
