Abstract

Paederus fuscipes is an important predators in soybean fields, including toward Helicoverpa armigera. Predation evaluation using a cage are very common, giving significant suppressed the exposed pest population. However, predation evaluation in open space is rarely conducted. This study was to investigate the dispersal capability of P. fuscipes, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the beetle release in the predation on H. Armigera eggs and larvae. Observations were made in a soybean field in Mekarwangi Village, Cianjur, during soybean planting season in 2005 and 2006. In the dispersal study, all beetles were collected from the field and tagged on the elitra. As many as 1187 tagged beetle were released. The dispersal was observed in the area within a radius of 40 m from the release point. In the predation study, eggs and larvae of H.armigera from laboratory rearing were used as the prey. Soybean plots with exposed prey were treated by releasing the beetle with different densities, i. e., 100-400 beetles, and a control. The released beetles were from laboratory rearing and beetles were collected from the field. The study indicated that the tagged beetles that were released to the soybean field actively move but their dispersal were relatively slow. Until 5 days after release, most beetles were remain in the area surrounding release point, within a radius of 5 m. Release of predators to the soybean field, suppressed H. armigera egg and larva populations for both vegetative and generative stages, but were not significantly different between treatment and control plots, except for the egg population on vegetative stage. It indicates that population of the natural predator in soybean field were very complex and potential to be used for controling pest populations. Thus, it is important to manage soybean field that can support the role of predators in the field. Key words: predator release, Paederus fuscipes, predation, Helicoverva armigera

Abstract

Kalimantan forests are mostly managed by human. Deforestation will affect the ecosystem and species inside. Oribatids are the most abundant soil mesofauna. They have an important role in decomposition of organic matter in the soil. Here, we investigated the effect of six different land use types (i.e. primary forest, secondary forest, jungle rubber, slash and burn, young fallow and old fallow) and evaluated the effect of environmental factors on the abundance and diversity of oribatids. The oribatids were collected using transect method along 100 m with 10 sampling points with the soil depth of 0-5 cm. Oribatids were extracted using Berlese Funnel Heat Extractor. Identification of oribatids was done to family level and diversity index was determined according to Shannon's diversity index. As much as 36 families of oribatids were recorded from the site at Mentebah, Kapuas Hulu. Oribatids in the jungle rubber showed the highest abundance (592.5 individuals/m2), followed by secondary forest (317.5 individuals/m2), primary forest (287.5 individuals/m2), slash and burn (195 individuals/m2), young fallow (157.5 individuals/m2) and old fallow (142.5 individuals/m2). The value of diversity index according to Shannon Wiener (H’) ranged between 1.71-2.64 or categorized as moderate diversity values. The results of the research showed that there were strong coefficient correlation values of some families of oribatids with soil pH, C-organic, N total, C/N ratio, water content and soil temperature

Abstract

Most of the forest area of PT Perkebunan Nusantara VIII have been converted to the plantation (tea, cacao, coffee) and agriculture, such as crops (intercropping of oranges and pineapple) areas. The forest conversion will affect soil biodiversity, which will reduce soil mesofauna population, such as the Oribatids group. Oribatids is one of the soil mesofauna which has a very important role in the soil as a decomposer. Because of its important role and their huge numbers in the soil, Oribatids can be used as a bioindicator of soil fertility. This study aimed to elucidate the abundance and diversity of Oribatids and the relationship between soil properties and population of Oribatids in three types of land use at PT Perkebunan Nusantara VIII. Soil and litter samples were taken in three different types of land use (tea gardens, intercropping, and secondary forests) using a simple random sampling method with a distance of each of the 15 sampling points of 100 m at a soil depth of 0-5 cm. Soil and litter samples were extracted using Berlese Funnel Heat Extractor. Oribatids identification was carried out until the family level, and the Oribatids diversity index were determined according to Shannon's diversity index. The identification results obtained in the three types of land use amounted to 24 families from 172 families found previously. The highest abundance of Oribatids was found in secondary forests both in the soil and litter layer (169.85 and 428.87 individuals/m², respectively), the lowest abundance of Oribatids was found in intercropping both in the soil and litter layer (89.17 and 229.30 individuals/m², respectively). According to Shannon Wiener (H'), the diversity index value ranges from 1.48-1.85 or it was categorized as a low-medium diversity value. The results of this study indicated that there was a positive correlation coefficient value from several families of Oribatids with soil pH, organic C, total N, C/N ratio, water content, and soil temperature.

Abstract

Pineapple is one of important fruit crops in Indonesia. One of important problems in pineapple production is pest infestation.. This study aims to investigate the biology, demography, and life cycle of Dolichotetranychus floridanus Banks on two pineapple cultivars (Queen and Cayenne). Observation of mite development (eggs-adults) were conducted every 6 hours. Adults were observed everyday to record the fecundity. The life table was constructed from the survivor and fecundity of D. floridanus. Based on this table, the variables of population growth, including gross reproduction rate (GRR), net reproductive rate (R0), mean generation time (T) and increase intrinsic rate (r) were determined. The results showed that the GRR, R0, and r of D. floridanus in the Queen cultivar were higher than Cayenne cultivar, while the T in the Queen cultivar was lower. Queen cultivar more suitable for D. floridanus than Cayenne cultivar.

Abstract

Aphis craccivora is one of the important pests on yard long bean. It causes direct damage and also has an indirect effect as insect vector of the Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). The research was done to test the effectiveness of chitosan in suppressing aphid population growth, feeding preference and its ability in transmiting BCMV. Chitosan with concentration ranging of 0.1–1.0% were applied on leaves using spraying method at 1 day before BCMV transmission. BCMV was transmitted by using 3 individuals of viruliferous aphids on each plant. Results show that chitosan treatments on leaves or plants significantly suppressed the population and feeding preferences of A. craccivora. Further, treated plants showed lower disease incidence, severity and BCMV titre significantly compared with untreated control plants. The positive effects of chitosan in suppressing population growth as feeding preferences and BCMV transmission might be due to the anti-feedant effect of chitosan on A. craccivora. Based on the result, chitosan at concentration 0.9% is the most effective concentration in suppressing BCMV and its vector A. craccivora.

Abstract

Red spider mite Tetranychus sp. is one of the most important pests attacking leaves of Jatropha curcas. The objective of this study was to elucidate life history parameters and abundance of spider mite on two J. curcas cultivars. Field studies were carried out in BALITTRI Pakuwon Sukabumi, and laboratory experiments were conducted at the Department of Plant Protection, Bogor Agricultural University, from June to November 2008. Cultivars significantly affected several life history parameters of the spider mite. Spider mite reared on IP1-P cultivar have longer oviposition period and higher fecundity than those on IP2-P (7.00 days and 25.56 eggs against 5.00 days and 10.00 eggs). The sex ratio of spider mite was 3.2 : 1 on IP1-P and 2.5 : 1 on IP2-P. Intrinsic rate of increase was also higher on IP1-P. However, field studies indicated that the spider mite were less abundant on this cultivar. These might be due to the presence of other arthropods which were higher on IP1-P. In general, the highest population of spider mite occurred in August and the lowest in October–November. Predatory mite Family Phytoseiidae was found associated with spider mite, however its role as natural control agent was not significant.
