Abstract

Abstract

Malaria is one of endemic disease in Indonesia that caused many deaths. Immune system plays important rules in preventing malaria severity. Bangle has been proven as an immunostimulant and could reduce parasitaemia in malaria infection. This study aimed to determine the activity of n-hexane fraction of bangle methanolic extract as complementary therapy of malaria. This study used 28 mice, divided into one positive control group, one negative control group, and five treatment groups. Bangle stimulation before induction was given to five treatment groups with dose: 0,005625mg/grbw, 0,01125mg/grbw, 0,0225mg/grbw, 0,045mg/grbw, and 0,09mg/grbw for 14 days. Plasmodium berghei induction was given to all groups, and then treatment groups were given ACT and bangle fraction, and positive control group was given ACT without fraction for three days. Parasitaemia was observed everyday, then plasmodium growth inhibition percentation was counted. Bangle fraction stimulation gave lower parasitaemia at the begining and Pearson correlation test showed strong positive correlation between dose of bangle fraction and plasmodium growth inhibition percentation (p<0,01). We can conclude that n-hexane fraction of bangle methanolic extract was active as complementary therapy of malaria (IC50=0,013 mg/grbb). Keywords: malaria, bangle, n-hexane, complementary therapy

Abstract

The data from the Health Research Association of Indonesian Ministry of Health in 2010 showed approximately 35.6% infants having PEM. The diet therapy for severe PEM is modisco. However, due to protein deficiency such as a protease enzyme resulting in nutrients malabsorption, modisco has not been able to compensate the lack of protein in PEM. It requires an active substance to increase protein absorption by adding a proteolytic enzyme. One of the source of proteolytic enzyme is pineapple. The study aimed to prove that addition of pineapple extract on modisco can increase levels of albumin and hemoglobin in severe PEM rats. This was a true experimental study with pre-post test control group design. The sample were 25 male Wistar rats aged 2 months. The data analysis using the Pairwise T test, one way ANOVA followed by LSD showed a significantly difference between pre and post test for both albumin and haemoglobin. The pineapple extract at a dose of 9 and 11 mg/day increased albumin level. And the dose of 7, 9 and 11 mg/day pineapple extract increase haemoglobin level. In conclusion, a modisco modification using pineapple extract for nutritive therapy increased both albumin and hemoglobin levels on severe MEP rats.   Keywords: Severe PEM, Modisco, Pineapple extract

Abstract

High dose of paracetamol is metabolized by cytochrome P-450 become free radical N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI) but liver Glutathione (GSH) is not adequate to change it become nonreactive metabolite so that NAPQI bind to unsaturated fatty acid of cell membrane, causing lipid peroxidation and increase liver Malondialdehyde (MDA). 'A' apple vinegar contains anthocyanin with an antioxidant effect by electron donor to NAPQI and acetic acid to improve liver GSH level. The aim of research was to investigate the effect of 'A' apple vinegar on the rat liver MDA induced by toxic dose of paracetamol. Research groups consist of normal control (CMC Na 1% 1 ml for 14 days), negative control (CMC Na 1% 1ml for 14 days + paracetamol 291.6 mg/200gBW on the day 12nd,13rd,14th), and treatment group ('A' apple vinegar 0.4 ml/150gBW for 14 days + paracetamol 291.6 mg/200gBW on the day 12nd,13rd,14th). Liver MDA was measured on the day 15th with competitive ELISA. The average of normal control group was 21.58 ng/ml, negative control group was 70,71 ng/ml, treatment group was 37,67 ng/ml. One way ANOVA and Post hoc LSD test showed significantly differences between all groups (p<0,05). It can be concluded that 'A' apple vinegar had an effect on the liver MDA induced by toxic dose of paracetamol. Keywords: Paracetamol, NAPQI, MDA, 'A' apple vinegar, antioxidant

Abstract

Watermelon rind water extract contain of citrulline. Citrulline is a precursor of generating Nitric Oxide (NO). NO possibly reduced the level of blood glucose in streptozotosin-induced diabetic rats. This study was a laboratory experimental study completely randomized design. A number of 30 male albino Wistar rats weighting 100 – 200 gr were devided into six groups (N=5), with group 1 served as normal control group. The other groups were given streptozotosin to induced diabetes mellitus. The rats in control diabetic group were given CMC 0,5%, the others were given watermelon rind extracs for 8 days with different doses for each group. The results showed that serum glucose levels in posttest control group was significantly different, from that group of the watermelon rind extract 250 mg/kg bw/day (p = 0,000), groups of watermelon rind extract 500 mg/kgbw/day (p = 0,000) and groups of watermelon rind extract 1000 mg/kgbw/day (p = 0,000). The level of triglyceride in postest control was significantly different from that group of the watermelon rind extract 250 mg/kg bw/day (p = 0,000), groups of watermelon rind extract 500 mg/kgbw/day (p = 0,000) and groups of watermelon rind extract 1000 mg/kgbw/day (p = 0,000).The conclusion, the watermelon rind water extrac can be used to reduced glucose serum level (250, 500, 1000mg/kg bw) with the optimal dose was 500 mg /kgbw/day with the optimal dose was 1000 mg /kgbw/day.

Abstract

Epidemiological studies show an increased incidence of diabetes mellitus. The initial therapy of diabetes mellitus is a diet treatment. The recommended intake of fat is a Saturated Fatty Acids (SFA) <7% and a Polyunsatturated Fatty Acid (PUFA) <10% of calories. The corn oil contains PUFA and the virgin coconut oil contains SFA as the main component. Aims of this study was to compare the effectivity of corn oil (Zea mays) and virgin coconut oil (Cocos nucifera L.) in decreasing blood glucose level in alloxane-ijnected wistar rats. This was a laboratory experiment research, used the posttest-only control design. The negative control group was wistar rats injected by aquabidest and standard feed diet (K-); the positive control group was alloxane-injected rats with standard feed diet (K+); alloxane-injected rats with standard food diet and 0.54 mL of corn oil/day for 28 days were P1 group; alloxane-injected rats with standard diet food and 0.54 mL of virgin coconut oil/day for 28 days were P2 group. Statistical analysis using the one way ANOVA test showed that the corn oil and virgin coconut oil decrease blood glucose level, but there was no significantly difference in decresing of blood glucose level between P1 and P2. This study concluded that the corn oil and the virgin coconut oil have the same effectiveness in decreasing blood glucose level in wistar rats injected with alloxane. Keywords: Corn oil, virgin coconut oil, blood glucose level, alloxane
