Abstract

For optimum utilization of coconut wood, there are necessity to improve the quality of the wood caused by higroscopicity, low dimensional stability, and extreme variability of dimension in lateral direction. The purpose of the research were to analyze the characteristics of coconut wood that had been treated by heating and densification. The treatment consist of one or two hours heating, one hour heating combined to 10 or 20% densification, two hours heating combined to 10 or 20% densification. Temperature that applied for all specimen were 180 oC. The research results are as follows: (1) Heating treatment combined to densification effective to reduce higroscopicity of coconut wood, (2) Heating treatment for two hours are suffice as pretreatment to densify the soft part of coconut wood for 20%, (3) Dimensional stability of coconut wood may improve using heating combined to densification treatments that indicated by decreasing rate of dimensional change, (4) Heating and densification treatment effective to improve the hardness of soft part coconut wood. Abstract

Kendala dari kegiatan pengabdian yang telah dilakukan sebelumnya adalah cepatnya produk kerajinan yang dibuat terserang organisme perusak kayu. Sehingga, diperlukan suatu pengetahuan mengenai metode pengawetan kayu terhadap bahan baku kerajinan. Metode yang dipilih adalah metode sederhana yang sebenarnya sudah sering dilakukan oleh masyarakat desa. Metode pengawetan dengan menggunakan pengasapan dan perendaman. Metode pengasapan dilakukan dengan menggunakan drum dan oven, sedangkan metode perendaman dengan menggunakan serbuk kayu yang tergolong awet yaitu kayu jati dan kayu bayam. Hasil yang diperoleh dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah peserta memperoleh pengetahuan tambahan mengenai teknologi tepat guna dalam peningkatan ketahanan kayu terhadap serangan organisme perusak dan pengetahuan dalam mengenali dan mengidentifikasi sumberdaya hutan yang potensial digunakan sebagai bahan pengawet dan praktik langsung pengawetan bahan baku untuk produk kerajinan. Kata kunci: pengawetan kayu, bahan baku, kerajinan

Abstract

The use of recycled carton as an alternative material for the layer of composite board may increase the board strength properties. The objective of this research was to find out the influence of face and back layer types on the quality of produced boards. Materials used in this study were wafer made from sengon wood (Paraserianthes falcataria L. Nielsen), water based polymer isocyanate adhesive, and several kinds of cartons such as duplex carton, recycled carton, and waste of corrugated board. The composite board was produced with the target density of 0.65 g/cm3 and the resin solid content of 6% based on oven dry weight of particle, face and back layers. The results are as follows : 1) Utilization of carton layers improved the dimensional stability and bending strength of board; 2) Composite board with recycled carton layer fullfilled the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) A-5908-1994 for wafer board type in terms of density, water content, and modulus of rupture (MOR) in lengthwise and widhtwise of board but, did not fullfill that for veneered particled board type; 3) The presence of those layer material types decreased internal bond of the board. Abstract

Fire resistance, termite resistance, and high dimensional stability are among critical attributes of cement board composite as alternative material to replace solid wood products. This study aimed to evaluate characteristics of cement boards made from various age classes of bamboo (1-2 year old, 3-4 year old, and 5-6 year old) and nature of bamboo stem (used and fresh bamboo). Cement board was produced with target density of 0.9 g cm-3, and 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm in dimension and the results showed that cement board made from younger bamboo (1-2 year old) had better physical and mechanical characteristics than cement board made from the older bamboo. Most of physical and mechanical characteristics, except for modulus of rupture and dimensional stability, of cement board made from younger bamboo fulfill the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) A 5417-2003. The results also showed that cement board made from used bamboo had similar characteristics with cement board made from fresh bamboo. Key words: Young bamboo, used bamboo, cement board

Abstract

This study was aimed to analyze the resistance of composites board made from wafer and carton or paper overlaid on drywood termite and subterranean termite. Materials used in this study were wafer from sengon wood (Paraserianthes falcataria L. Nielsen), water based polymer isocyanate adhesive, veneer, and several kind of carton and paper such as duplex carton, recycle carton, corrugate board, and waste of cement sack. The target density was 0.65 g/cm3, while the resin solid content was 6%. The result of this study showed that no significantly different on infection rate of drywood termite among of composite board types and solid wood. The weight loose of composites board were 1.2–3.8%, while solid wood was 2.7%. Composites board more favorable to infection Macrotermes gilvus than solid wood. The weight loose of composites board were 19.3 – 28.8%, while solid wood was 12.6%. Key words: Composites board, drywood termite, subterranean termite

Abstract

Sabbeta Village ', Pising Village, Soppeng Regency is a pilot village for silk development in Soppeng Regency. Service activities undertaken are Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and training. Partners of this community service activity are the Sabbeta Village Farmers Group and the Mega Sutera Farmers Group. The purpose of the FGD is to examine the debates and challenges raised by silk farmers in developing women's relations in Pising Village. From the results of the FGD chose a number of problems to make training materials as a solution for farmers. In general, topics related to farmers are silk related to marketing, low productivity and eco print on silk fabrics. Monopoly-producing marketing makes the price of yarn produced very low. Until now, silk farmers in Soppeng Regency only produce silk yarn, while silk fabric production is in Wajo District. Low productivity because it is related to the importance and the product, especially the yarn produced, is not standard. In addition, women-only societies develop eco-print techniques on silk fabrics. The FGD was closed with a visit to the houses of the people which were used as caterpillars, seed gardens, spinning and souvenir galleries. Based on a review of the FGD results, the activities carried out were training on entrepreneurship, silkworm maintenance and eco print. The business of silkworm maintenance can be optimal if carried out in accordance with the procedure so as to produce threads that meet the standards. The maintenance of silkworms by farmers is very conventional, not in accordance with standard procedures. The results of the eco print technique were not satisfactory because the coloring was not optimal. The training provided is expected to increase their knowledge, so that it becomes a solution to the problem so far.Keywords: Sabbeta Village, Pising Village, silkworm maintenance, eco print. ABSTRAKKampung Sabbeta’, Desa Pising, Kabupaten Soppeng merupakan kampung percontohan untuk pengembangan sutera di Kabupaten Soppeng. Kegiatan pengabdian yang dilakukan adalah Focus Group Discussion (FGD) dan pelatihan. Mitra dari kegiatan pengabdian ini, yaitu Kelompok Tani Kampung Sabbeta’ dan Kelompok Tani Mega Sutera. Tujuan dari FGD untuk mengkaji permasalahan dan kendala yang dihadapi para petani sutera dalam mengembang-kan persuteraan di Desa Pising. Dari hasil FGD dipilih beberapa masalah untuk dijadikan bahan pelatihan sebagai solusi dari permasalahan para petani. Secara umum, permasalahan yang dihadapi petani sutera terkait pemasaran, produktifitas yang rendah dan eco print di kain sutera. Pemasaran yang bersifat monopoli membuat harga benang yang dihasilkan sangat rendah. Sampai saat ini, petani-petani sutera di Kabupaten Soppeng hanya menghasilkan benang sutera, sedangkan produksi kain sutera ada di Kabupaten Wajo. Produktifitas yang rendah disebabkan karena ketergantungan akan bibit impor dan produk, khususnya benang yang dihasilkan, tidak standar. Selain itu, masyarakat khususnya para wanita mengem-bangkan teknik eco print di kain sutera. Kegiatan FGD ditutup dengan kunjungan ke rumah-rumah penduduk yang dijadikan tempat pemeliharaan ulat, kebun benih, pemintalan, dan galeri souvenir. Berdasarkan kajian dari hasil FGD, kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah pelatihan yaitu kewirausahaan, pemeliharaan ulat sutera dan eco print. Usaha pemeliharaan ulat sutera dapat optimal jika dilakukan sesuai dengan prosedur sehingga menghasilkan benang yang memenuhi standar. Pemeliharaan ulat sutera yang dilakukan petani sangat konvensional, tidak sesuai dengan prosedur standar. Hasil teknik eco print yang dikerjakan kurang memuaskan karena pewarnaan belum maksimal. Pelatihan yang diberikan diharapkan dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka, sehingga menjadi solusi dari permasalahan selama ini. Kata kunci: Kampung Sabbeta’, Desa Pising, pemeliharaan ulat sutera, eco print.

Abstract

Optimum utilization of raw materials is very important to overcome the limited raw materials supply. The objective of this study was to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of cement board made of stem and branch of tree. Materials used in this study were three wood species from community forest, namely; sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria), candlenut (Aleurites moluccana), and gmelina (Gmelina arborea). The raw materials taken from stem and branch of tree were converted into particle using hammer mill. Composition of particle, water, and cement weight based were 1 : 1,25 : 2,5 for produce cement board, while density target of the boards were 0.85 g cm-3. To improve the board quality, 2.5 % CaCl2 based on cement weight was added. Mixed meterials then cold pressed during 24 hours and then conditioned for 1 month before tested. The research resuts are as follows: 1) Dimensional stability of cement board made from stem were superior compared to cement board made from branch of tree, 2) The MOR and Internal Bond of cement board have no clear different pattern between stem and branch of tree, 3) The MOE of cement board made from branch were higher compared to cement board made from stem of the three wood species. Abstract

The effect of preservative treatment using carbon dioxide as a carrier solvent on wood physical properties and dimensional stability had been observed on three commercial wood species (Agathis sp., Palaquium sp., and Heritiera sp.). For the purpose of the study, wood samples measuring 1,5 (R) x 1,5 (T) x 15 (L) cm were prepared. Treatment was conducted at elevated temperature (50C - 350C) and increased pressure (60 - 80 kgf/cm2) on one occasion with five replicates using two specimens of each wood species for each treatment. The final treatment condition was maintained for three different periods (10, 20, 30 minutes). Results indicated that the physical properties and dimensional stability of the preserved wood were not significantly affected by the application of CO2 impregnation as carrier solvent. Abstract

Salah satu kecamatan di Kabupaten Soppeng adalah Kecamatan Lili Riaja. Kecamatan ini memiliki tujuh Kelompok Tani Hutan (KTH) yang aktif memanfaatkan sumberdaya alam di sekitar hutan. Salah satu KTH yang menjadi mitra pada kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah KTH Mallapaowe. Permasalahan yang dihadapi mitra, produk mereka memiliki daya saing dan nilai jual yang sangat rendah. Produk yang menjadi andalan KTH Mallapaowe adalah “coin kalua” dan gula semut dari pohon aren. Bentuk kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah transfer ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi guna meningkatkan nilai jual produk para anggota KTH serta strategi pemasaran untuk meningkatkan daya saing produk dalam bentuk ceramah dan Focus Group Discussion (FGD) serta Pelatihan. Selain itu dilakukan pre test dan post test untuk mengukur tingkat keberhasilan kegiatan kami. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat dilaksanakan dan dikembangkan oleh anggota KTH guna meningkatkan daya jual dan daya saing produk mereka. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah meningkatnya pengetahuan anggota KTH terkait cara pengemasan dan pemanenan madu dari lebah Trigona sp sebesar 37% dari sebelum hingga setelah kegiatan pengabdian ini. Bentuk kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah Ceramah dan FGD mengenai: 1). Strategi pemasaran produk; 2). Berbagai cara pemanenan madu; dan 3). Berbagai contoh kemasan produk. Pelatihan yang diberikan kepada anggota KTH antara lain pembuatan kertas daur ulang untuk bahan pengemasan, cara pengemasan dengan menggunakan mesin fortable “Seal and Vacuum”, membuat berbagai macam contoh kemasan produk yang menarik serta cara pemanenan madu lebah Trigona sp dengan Metode Sedot Madu dengan Spoit/Pipet. Kata Kunci: Kelompok Tani Hutan Mallapaowe, pengemasan, coin kalua, gula semut, Trigona sp.
