Abstract

This research aims to describe the semantic components of the metaphorical expressions found in the law discourse of the Jawa Pos daily newspaper by contrasting  the semantic components of the source domain (the literal expressions) and the target domain (the metaphorical expressions) to discover the similarities of meanings of, and to reveal the functions of the metaphorical expressions used in the discourse. The data were collected using non-participatory observation, critical reading, and note-taking. The data were analyzed using referential identity and distributional methods with substitution and paraphrasing techniques. The result of the research reveals two main findings. First,the association of the source and the target domains can be elaborated by analyzing the diagnostic components of each domain. The analysis uncovers four similarities of meanings: in action, qualities, movement, and attributes. Secondly, the metaphorical expressions in this discourse are mainly used for popularizing or dramatizing the issue to draw the readers’ attention to increase the sale of the newspaper, and to criticize and denigrate the law executers (prosecutors and judges) to be more objective in doing their jobs so that law enforcement in Indonesia will be more powerful.Keywords : metaphorical expressions, semantic components, source,target, meanings, functions

Abstract

Delivering request is not only influenced by linguistic factors, but also by socio-cultural factors. Some studies have reported the interaction between linguistic and socio-cultural factors in delivering requests in many different languages. However, this issue is rarely explored in Javanese (language). The aim of this study is to investigate the politeness strategies, the linguistic markers, and the social contexts commonly used to deliver requests in Javanese. The data were collected and sorted from the conversations among the Javanese people in Jember, East Java, Indonesia, when making speech acts to deliver requests. Having been sorted, the data were analysed using the deconstructive method to reveal the linguistic markers commonly used by the Javanese speakers to deliver requests and the social-cultural backgrounds which influence the choice of the politeness strategies. This research shows that (1) there are four types (most direct, direct, less direct, and indirect) of politeness strategies in Javanese, (2) there are four linguistic devices (sentence moods, speech levels, passive voice, and supposition/condition) as the markers of the politeness strategies and (3) the choices of the levels are strongly influenced by the social contexts (social distance, age, social status or power, and the size of imposition) among the tenors. The appropriate strategies for delivering requests in Javanese will make the communication among the interlocutors run harmoniously.

Abstract

The Adjustment Bureau movie depicts the character David Norris who struggled to get the autonomy of himself because his life is under controlled by The Adjustment Bureau which has full control of human?s life to make people live life based on their plan. David Norris as the main character in the movie is believed to construe individualism. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) reveal the delineation of individualism in the movie through its linguistic data, (2) convey the interpretation of the relation between linguistic data and the discourse practice to reveal individualism in The Adjustment Bureau movie, and (3) explain why individualism exists in the movie. Further, this study applies qualitative method since the data are in form of clauses taken from the clauses of David Norris and the members of The Adjustment Bureau in the movie. In analyzing the data, it is used Fairclough three stages in critical discourse analysis; describing the text, interpreting the discursive practice, and explaining the sociocultural context. From the analysis, it reveals that David using his power through the use of linguistic choice succeed to defend his ideology.

Abstract

Abstract:  Javanese has been studied from many different perspectives. However, no one discusses how Javanese respond to compliments politely. The aim of this study is to investigate the politeness strategies as applied to respond to compliments by the Javanese people in Jember, East Java. The notion of politeness plays crucial role in the realization of speech acts (utterances and verbal communication) in Javanese, such as responding to compliements. As utterances and verbal communications should be interpreted based on the sosio-cultural background, the politeness strategies in responding to compliments in Javanese cannot be separated from the concepts of the Javanese culture, such as: andhap-asor (lowering oneself, while exalting the others) and tanggap ing sasmita (understanding the hidden meaning). First, as a Javanese, one must be able to apply the concept of andhap-asor in responding to compliments by denigrating himself. Second, a good Javanese should also have a sense of tanggap ing sasmita while responding to compliments. Consequently, failure to apply one of the cultural factors can be detrimental to the speaker, reducing the harmony of the conversation. This paper examines how politeness is manifested and conveyed within the major framework of the Javanese culture. This study is about socio-cultural pragmatics in which utterances are discussed in relation to their situations, and the cultural background which support them. The data are in the form of dialogues among students-teachers, and students-students which show the different social status among the interlocutors. The data of this research were collected by recording, and by note taking (for the parts in which recording is not possible). The data are aimed to generate the strategies used by the Javanese (in Jember, Indonesia) to build politeness strategies in responding to compliments. Finally, the data of this research are examined both from the general theory of politeness, and the Javanese cultural concepts (andhap-asor and tanggap ing sasmita). This study provides important findings which reveal that responding to compliments in Javanese can be achieved in five strategies: (1) disagreeing and denigrating, (2) disagreing and raising a question, (3) accepting and turning back, (4) accepting and giving explanation, and (5) accepting only, or accepting and offering.

Abstract

Para pelaku bisnis Multi Lavel Marketing (MLM) seringkali memanfaatkan retorika persuasi untuk untuk merekrut nasabah sebagai anggota baru dalam bisnis MLM yang mereka geluti. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyingkap jenis-jenis strategi dan teknik persuasi yang digunakan oleh para pembicara untuk memengaruhi dan merekrut calon anggota baru pada bisinis MLM Bodong. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif, pendekatan yang digunakan adalah kualitatif kritis dengan model analisis ujaran yang mengandung unsur persuasi.  Data penelitian berupa frasa dan atau penggalan-penggalan kalimat yang mengandung unsur persuasif dikumpulkan dari empat video seminar dan testimoni oleh pembicara PT.QNET International.  Keempat video seminar dan testimoni tersebut diunduh dari empat kanal YouTube pada tanggal 13, 15, dan 18 Maret 2020. Data yang talah terkumpul diseleksi dan diberi kode menurut strategi yang digunakan dan teknik penerapan masing-masing persuasi. Selanjutnya, data dianalisis berdasarkan teori persuasi Aristoteles (1984) untuk mengungkap jenis strategi dan teknik persuasi yang digunakan guna merekrut anggota baru. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga jenis strategi persuasi, yaitu: Logos, Etos, dan Patos. (1) Strategi logos diterapkan dengan teknik pembuktian keberhasilan, sebab akibat, slogan, penggunaan gaya bahasa, (2) strategi etos diterapkan dengan teknik penggunaan nilai keagamaan/sosial, citra positif, rendah diri, dan ungkapan, dan (3) stretegi etos diterapkan dengan teknik cerita anekdot, penciptaan emosional, dan penggunaan kalimat imperatif. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi pembelajaran dan masukan kepada masyarakat agar tidak mudah terpengaruh oleh bujuk rayuan pihak-pihak yang kurang bertanggung jawab terkait dengan penanaman modal (investasi) pada kegiatan bisnis yang menjanjikan keuntungan yang tidak wajar.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan dominasi dan ketidaksetaraan hubunganantara Kreditor dan Debitor dalam Surat Perjanjian Pembiayaan Kendaraan (SPPK).Sumber data adalah dokumen SPPK yang dikeluarkan oleh PT Toyota Astra FinancialServices Cabang Jember. Pengumpulan data dengan teknik simak dan catat. Analisismenggunakan kerangka teori wacana kritis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwaKreditor sebagai pihak yang berkuasa mendominasi pemroduksian teks SPPK, mencakup:perumusan isi surat perjanjian, penataan urutan bagian-bagian, proses pembuatan, danpenandatanganan. Mengacu pada isi perjanjian, pihak Kreditor menunjukkan dominasiterhadap Debitor. Hal itu terungkap melalui pasal-pasal yang selalu berpihak danmelindungi kepentingan Kreditor serta tidak adanya pasal yang berpihak pada Debitor.Fakta tersebut membuktikan bahwa relasi sosial didominasi oleh Kreditor, sehinggaterjadi hubungan yang tidak setara.Kata kunci: Kreditor, Debitor, dominasi, ketidaksetaraan, surat perjanjian

Abstract

English translation of the Holy Qur’an comes as solutions for Muslims and non-Muslims worldwide to be able to understand the message of the Holy Qur’an besides its authentic Arabic text. Two of the most famous versions are translated by Saheeh International SI (2004) and Abdel Haleem hereafter AH (2004). Since Arabic and English belong to different language families, the translations resulted in the variation of lexicons and grammatical structures to express the same meaning in English from the Holy Qur’an. This research attempts to reveal how lexical and grammatical differences happened in two different English translation versions of surah al-Fatihah by SI and AH. The data were analyzed using a contrastive analysis method with content analysis. The results showed that firstly, there are lexical and grammatical differences in the five ayats. Secondly, SI used procedures that are mostly oriented to the SLT such as transcription and componential analysis while AH used procedures that are mostly oriented to the TLT such as modulation and contraction. Lastly, the two translators applied different dominant ideologies on their translations. SI represents the foreignization ideology while AH represents domestication ideology. Keywords: al-Fatihah, English translation, contrastive analysis, translation procedures, translation ideology PROSEDUR PENERJEMAHAN DAN IDEOLOGI DALAM DUA VERSI  TERJEMAHAN BAHASA INGGRIS SURAT AL-FATIHAH:  SEBUAH ANALISIS KONTRASTIF AbstrakTerjemahan bahasa Inggris dari kitab suci AlQur’an adalah sebuah solusi untuk orang-orang muslim dan nonmuslim di seluruh dunia untuk dapat memahami isi dari kitab suci AlQur’an di samping teks Arab aslinya. Di antara versi terjemahan-terjemahan kitab suci AlQur’an, dua yang paling terkenal diterjemahkan oleh Saheeh International yang disingkat SI (2004) dan Abdel Haleem (2004) yang disingkat AH. Karena bahasa Arab dan bahasa Inggris berasal dari keluarga bahasa yang berbeda, terdapat beberapa perbedaan leksikal dan gramatikal dalam terjemahan dari kitab suci Al-Qur’an untuk menunjukkan makna yang sama di dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana perbedaan leksikal dan gramatikal terjadi pada dua versi terjemahan surah al-Fatihah oleh SI dan AH. Data dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis kontrastif dengan analisis konten. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pertama, terdapat perbedaan leksikal dan gramatikal yang dapat ditemukan di 5 ayat. Kedua, SI menggunakan prosedur yang kebanyakan berorientasi pada bahasa sumber seperti transkripsi dan analisis komponen, sedangkan AH menggunakan prosedur yang kebanyakan berorientasi pada bahasa sasaran seperti modulasi dan reduksi. Selain itu, SI cenderung menggunakan ideologi foreignisasi, sedangkan AH cenderung menggunakan ideologi domestikasi. Kata kunci: Al-Fatihah, terjemahan bahasa Inggris, analisis kontrastif, prosedur penerjemahan, ideologi penerjemahan

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas perubahan-perubahan bunyi yang terjadi pada morfem bahasa Inggris yang bermakna lampau. Ada dua kelompok bentuk lampau dalam bahasa Inggris, yaitu teratur dan tidak teratur. Yang pertama merupakan phonologically bound, sedangkan yang kedua merupakan phonologically bound. Artikel ini hanya membahas bentuk teratur yang mana perubahan bunyi dapat diperoleh dengan menggunakan rumus fonologi. Teori yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah fonologi generatif yang dapat menghubungkan struktur dalam ke struktur luar. Studi ini menggunakan penelitian kepustakaan (kamus, buku teks berbahasa Inggris), data kualitatif, studi dokumentasi, metode deskriptif dan pendekatan intrinsik-obyektif. Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa kata kerja lampau dalam bahasa Inggris mempunyai tiga allofon, [d], [t], dan [id]. Perubahan-perubahan pada fonem ke allofon dapat dihasilkan melalui dua rumus: voicing agreement rule, dan vowel insertion rule pada proses derivasi. Dalam hubungannya dengan keteraturan rumus, the insertion rule tidak dapat didahului oleh the assimilation rule.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the gender inequality between male and female in the novel entitled Sold. It is the representation of Nepalese culture in social life. The data sources data are the novel of Sold. The data in this study are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences that found in the Sold which contains gender inequality. Critical discourse analysis by Van Dijk’s theory is applied in this study. The result of this study shows that male tends to dominate over female. Male points how irresponsibility they are to their own family. Moreover, women have limited decision powers. They will be abandoned by their husbands and they are not allowed to make their own choices due to cultural or religious instructions.Keywords: Gender inequality, critical discourse analysis, sold, domination.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze a poem from linguistic framework. This is a library research, using qualitative data, documentary study, description, deconstruction and content analysis method. An intrinsic-objective approach is also employed in this research. The analysis commences from lexicogrammar which produces automatized pattern and non-automatized one. The automatized pattern produces the subject matter while the non-automatized pattern yields the first order of meaning. In addition, the first order of meaning serves as symbols to generate the second order of meaning or literary meaning. Finally, the literary meaning navigates us to generalize the deepest meaning of the poem. The research result proves that the subject matter of the poem is ‘the prostitute took the man and the hermit to the indecent swamp and killed them in the morning’. The first order of meaning of this poem refers to the clause six to ten. The literary meaning is ‘in immoral, wicked, and evil places, people do not believe in God anymore’. They do anything to get their ambition-such as wealth, rank, and women. Even, they are proud of their wealth, rank, and of showing their lust. Eventually, the deepest meaning of the poem is about ‘the moral degradation’.
