Abstract

Abstrak. Reading is very important for the students in learning English, especially for the students. The students are able to comprehend what they read to get the ideas and make a conclusion about the information from the text as intended by the writer. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. This research began by conducting a preliminary study by interviewing the English teacher of the seventh grade students of SMPN 6 Jember. The data of this research were collected from the students of reading comprehension ability test that was analyzed by using the formula. The result of the students reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts covering word comprehension, sentence comprehension, paragraph comprehension and text comprehension were showed the highest percentage of four indicators was word comprehension with the percentage 83.08% which belonged to the “very good” category and the lowest percentage was the text comprehension with the percentage 57.89% that was classified as “poor” category. It showed that the teaching English in reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts needs to be developed especially in the lowest category that was belonged to text comprehension.   Keywords : Descriptive Research, Descriptive Texts, Reading Comprehension Ability.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research was intended to improve the VIII-C students’ participation and vocabulary achievement by using Pop-up Pictures at SMPN 1 Beji - Pasuruan. The research area was chosen by using purposive method. The data collection methods of this research were interview, observation, documentation, and vocabulary achievement test. The research participants were VIII-C students. This research was held collaboratively between the researcher and the English teacher. The research was done in two cycles while each cycle consisted of three meetings. The observation result in Cycle 1 showed that the average of the students’ participation was only 65%. It increased to 77.5% the observation result in Cycle 2. Additionally, there were only 65% students who got score 70 in Cycle 1 and it was 77.5% students got score 70 or higher in the vocabulary achievement test in Cycle 2. Abstract

This article investigates the language realizations of dispreferred social acts from an animation movie called the Lion King (1994) used a model how English was used to express dispreferred social acts naturally. Descriptivequalitative research design was usedto describe the phenomena about dispreferred social acts. This research qualitatively generates the narrative data about he realizations of dispreferred social acts in the movie that were performed in mitigated and unmitigated forms. The research findings showed that the movie characters mitigated the form of the language realizations of dispreferred social acts to maintain social relationship. Unless their relationship was established, they sometimes express their intimate expressions directly without mitigation. Therefore, teachers should use the mitigated form of English to appear polite.

Abstract

This research was intended to enhance the students’ participation and reading comprehension achievement by using Skimming and Scanning Techniques at MAN 1 Jember that was conducted collaboratively with the English teacher. The design of the research was classroom action research. The research participants was the X IPA 4 grade students of MAN 1 Jember. The implementation of skimming and scanning techniques could improve the tenth IPA 4 grade students’ active participation in the reading teaching learning process. The result of the observation showed that the percentage of students’ active participation improved from 75.76% in meeting 1 to 78.79% in meeting 2. Furthermore, the implementation of skimming and scanning techniques could enhance the tenth IPA 4 grade students’ reading comprehension achievement in the reading teaching learning process. The result of the reading test showed that the percentage of the students who got at least 75 was 78.79% or 26 students of 33 students. Based on the result above, it could be concluded that both the result of observation and reading comprehension achievement test had achieved the success criteria of this classroom action research in cycle 1.

Abstract

Textbooks have a vital role in the teaching and learning process, especially in a foreign language classroom. Unfortunately, not all the published textbook are appropriate to be used in the classroom. Therefore, this study focuses on teachers‟ perception towards the use of eleventh-grade textbook developed by Erlangga. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The research participants were teachers. Measured using Tentative Evaluation Checklist ByNimechisalem and Mukundan.The Participants were eleventh-grade teachers from MAN 1 and MAN 2 Jember. Based on the result from eleventh-grade teachers‟ perceptions showed that The English Textbook published by Erlangga have the most weakest aspect that need more development.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to solve the problems dealing with the students' active participation and writing achievement. The research design was Classroom Action Research. The area and subjects of this research were chosen purposively by using purposive method. The subjects were the VIII-D students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanggul in the 2013/2014 academic year. The data collected were writing test, observation, interview and documentation. The results of this research showed that there were improvement of students' participation and their writing achievement in Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. In Cycle 1, there were 54.05% of the students who actively participated during the teaching learning process. Meanwhile, there were 40% of the students who achieved the target score. Beside, in Cycle 2, there were 70.26% of the students who actively participated during the teaching learning process, while 70.27% of the students achieved the target score. It proved that the use of Spidergram technique could improve the students' active participation and writing achievement. Abstract

This research was intended to analyze the politeness strategy employed by the characters in expressing apology based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies in the movie The Princess Diaries (2001). Designed as a descriptive-qualitative research, the data was analyzed by using the descriptive method where politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) was applied to see the types of politeness strategies. The data was taken from an American Comedy, Family and Romance movie entitled The Princess Diaries (2001). The result of the analysis showed that there were 15 utterances that can be classified as apologizing expression which were analyzed by using Brown and Levinson (1987) Politeness Strategies. Those 15 utterances were divided into 11 utterances using positive politeness and 4 utterances using negative politeness. Based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, positive politeness happened in a group of friend and a group of family that have close relationship with the Speaker while negative politeness used to avoid offence of the Hearer by showing respect. Thus, it is concluded that positive politeness was the most politeness strategies applied by all the characters in the movie to express apology, and all the characters who applied positive politeness strategy are female. Abstract

 Abstract: This study attempted to investigate the language realizations of dispreferred social acts from an animation movie called the Lion King (1994). The study aimed to give examples on how the English native speakers express their dispreferred social acts naturally performed by the characters with intimate relationship. It is important to know this because different culture between Indonesia and English may lead to different ways of expressing it. The realizations of dispreferred social acts by the characters that have intimate relationship in the movie are performed in mitigated and unmitigated forms. The finding suggests that these characters choose the mitigated form of the language realizations of dispreferred social acts as they want to maintain the social relationship with others. It is better to use the mitigated as those are more polite. Abstract

Abstract: This research and development was intended to develop ESP reading materials for automotive students by using authentic materials at SMKN 2 Jember. This research used Research and Development (R&D) as the research design which consisted of conducting needs analysis, developing ESP Reading materials, conducting validation, doing revision, administering try out, and finalising the materials adapted by Gall et al., The research subject of this research were automotive students at SMK Negeri 2 Jember. The data was collected by interviewing the English Teacher and giving questionnaires to the students. Based on the result of interviewing the English teacher, it was found that the teacher taught general English like in Senior High School for Vocational students. Actually the vocational students needs English in specific purpose. ESP reading materials can help the students to face their future job. They can understand about their manual books written in English.  .  After the students learnt about ESP Reading Materials, they felt happy because they learnt English related to their major.
