Abstract

The Threatening of Skouw Language in Jayapura. This local research aims mainly to faind out (1) The What factors that threatening the Skouw Language in Jayapura ?This local research takes places in Jayapura particularly in Skow area. The method used descriptive qualitative research the data are in the questionnaire form this study uses the descriptive method and supported by quantitative data. This study used two instruments, namely: observation and questionnaire, as a data collection tool. From the research, a community of Skouw residing in the Skouw Mabo village, Skouw Yambe village and Skouw Sae village, which use Skouw language only the elderly speakers or parents, while the young generation, use the Indonesian language. In general, seen from the results of research, will be extinct in a relatively short period of time when there was no awareness of the native speakers to teach the young generation and local governments, especially in Jayapura city government issued a policy for the preservation of Skouw language, which was one of Papua rich culture.

Abstract

The tittle of local research is The Students’ Ability In Translating English Idiom which researching the student of English letters students and graduate student in Titip Sentani Courses . The main problem of this research is to see the quality of translation English idiom result that done by fifth semester students of English letter in USTJ and Titip students course. The purpose of this study is to see whether both fifth semester of English letters and Titip students able to translate English idiom expressions of the source language to the target language (English to Indonesian), and whether students used many translation types in their translation. The method is used to take the data collection of this study are giving a set of test and questioners to the students. By using both of those procedures above, the data can be known and also students result that have translated, were analyzed to see that how far are the fifth semester students and Titip students able to transfer the core meaning of the source language to target language. There are many problems faced by students in translation process that is, students in fifth semester of English letters and Titip students found difficult words and the new idiom meaning to construct the sentence into the target language. The result of this local research show that students in fifth semester and Titip graduate students used free translation, word for word translation and literal translation types in their translation. The better translation result in translation done by a big part students of Titip students course that be able to transfer the idiom from the source language into the target language which is Bahasa Indonesia by using their existing language knowledge of both these language.

Abstract

Many forms of language can be used to measure our thinking ability. The different area has different way in communicating language. Karume or riddle is a language model that contains many signs, it is worthy to be preserved for the sake of cognition and creativity thinking of Toraja’s Millennium generation. This research aims to find the significances of local riddle, called karume, by using de Saussure’s theory that elaborates the idea of signifier, signified, and significance. For the further analysis, this research also investigates meaning of signs either denotatively or connotatively, the data then analyzed by combining both word-level analysis and sentence level analysis.  The method used in this research was a descriptive qualitative method. To obtain the data, the documentation technique was used. Firstly, the data downloaded from internet then translated lexically and contextually to get the cores that facilitated signifier and signified. In simplifying data analysis, the data was classified based on its forms and then put into a table and then the data analyzed structurally and denotatively-connotatively. The Result of this analysis revealed that there were three features of semiotics embodied in karume. They were 1. Analogy, 2. Language style, and 3. Entailment. They can be used to show referential significance of riddle in Toraja
