Abstract

This article examines heroic conceptions of terrorists, support, and sympathy for terrorism in Indonesia by undertaking a content analysis of four Indonesian online discussion forums in the aftermath of the 2002 Bali bombing. It is argued that online discussion forums are a particularly appropriate source of data from which to analyse Indonesians’ perceptions of the bombers, as these forums are widely thought to be representative of a new public sphere that allows for political debate and participation. From discussions between July 2008 and January 2009, the article outlines how the bombers were constructed as heroes and anti-heroes by different members of different forums. Drawing on a cultural sociological perspective, the article highlights the importance of understanding the reputation of individual terrorists, and the influence of established heroic types in understanding contemporary conflict in Indonesian society.[Artikel ini membahas konsepsi kepahlawanan teroris, dukungan, dan simpati terhadap terorisme di Indonesia dengan melakukan analisis isi terhadap forum diskusi online terkait dengan peristiwa Bom Bali tahun 2002.

Abstract

One of the influential factors in the formation of modern society in the Westernworld and subsequently spread to over the world has been the discovery of printing presswhich can be found in the form of printing method, printing company and print media.Since it was firstly used by Gutenberg in about 15th century AD, information which waspreviously delivered through oral medium with a limited audience, then through a methodof printing can be reproduced in large quantities and can be read by more audience, acrossdistance and time. Printing method which encourages the emergence of large printingcompanies and then print media has contributed in transforming modern cultural life ofsociety. In addition, the advent of the printing industries which has transformed intotransnational corporations as well as the emergence of journals and regular newspapersalso contributes significantly in raising public spaces as a medium for discussion andcritical thinking amidst society. Ultimately, this information media transformation brings achange in the state system which is more open and leads to the emergence of ideas ofnationalism which becomes an important milestone in transforming traditional societiesinto modern societies.

Abstract

This paper explores the veiling issues and the negotiation of piety among women in Komunitas Muslimah Beauty of Detik Forum. This paper examines to what extent this online community discusses hijab as fashion and piety? what the basis of the arguments for negotiating them? and how is piety constructed through commodity by women in that forum? The answers to this question are important to understand because they examine the assumption considering the lack of connection between piety and veiling when both are more materialized in such of commodity fetishism. To do this, I analyze the online discussion within the Komunitas Muslimah Beautiful in detik.com website. The findings of the paper inform both sociological understanding of the rise democracy in terms of the public sphere as well as the negotiation of women in their effort to connect veiling and piety within their online discussion. Keywords: agency, piety, commodity, public sphere, beauty

Abstract

The use of the ‘halal’ label was expanded. Label, which is originally shown on food and beverage products only, but currently also shown on non-food and beverage products, such as tissue, pan, and refrigerator. It is a phenomenon of halalization; an expansion of halal label for the product consumed by the Muslim community. Based on the qualitative method, the results of this study show that the Millennial Muslim generation’s understanding of halal is varying and affected by varying sources of knowledge and internet use. Knowledge source was no longer lies on Kiai/Ustadz only, but also on searching engine available in cyberspace. Social media and the internet also become media used by millennial Muslim generation to search for information on the product’s rightfulness. Millennial Muslim generation just wants to use a product with a halal label, and an affordable price. If it is unaffordable, they will choose other affordable products volitionally despite no halal label. The contestation in selecting and non-selecting the halal label shows the existence of interests and authority for millennial Muslim generation. This what is called the politics of the halal label.

Abstract

Abstract

Hijab (veiling) becomes a social imagination of piety for many muslim women. In Many areas in Indonesia, veiling even becomes one of the points of obligation in local regulations. This article discusses the social imaginary about the hijab for muslim women in Indonesia and Malaysia which then transforms into a social obligation supported by the state. The fact that these two countries run the multicultural politics that is required for accommodating religious, racial, and cultural differences is a challenge when the efforts of homogenizing identity continue to be fought by certain groups.[Jilbab menjadi imajinasi sosial tentang kesalehan bagi banyak perempuan muslim.

Abstract

Abstract

Sharia housing has mushroomed in Indonesia in recent years. It offers a different concept of housing as the developers claim to be following Islamic values. This study analyzes how Sharia housing advertisements on social media, especially Instagram, represent the halal lifestyle. The method used in this research was a semiotic approach to analyze the signs of Sharia housing ads in the realm of digital media and its meanings. The study results show that Sharia housing advertising on social media has commodified the halal concept of Sharia-based housing. The term “halal house” was also used to signify the meaning of Sharia image symbols that distinguished it from other housing. Sharia brands were also represented in advertising languages and the visualization of symbols displayed. These ads represented the halal concept not only as an image but also as a lifestyle. The halal lifestyle relating to Sharia housing has become a new trend in the Muslim communities constructed through religious symbols in Sharia housing advertisements.
