Abstract

This article discusses the development of the Charismatic church on the Christians life in Semarang City in 1970-2015 using historical methods and using social religion approach. Since its inception in 1970, the Charismatic church in the city of Semarang has had a major influence on the Christian life in the city. A series of innovations in worship and evangelism that are adapted to the times have made the Charismatic church much in demand by Christians in big cities, one of them is Semarang. Christian interest in the Charismatic church can be seen from the development of the number of Charismatic churches in the city of Semarang. One of the Charismatic churches that is experiencing rapid development is JKI Injil Kerajaan. In the beginning, there were 25 people in the congregations. One decade later it reached 3,557 people and continued to increase to 13,324 people on the next decade. This rapid development has brought significant changes to the Christians life in the city of Semarang. It can be seen, among others, from the increasing number of churches that are full of Charismatic churches at worship services. But on the other hand, the presence of Charismatic church with a new pattern of worship caused less harmonious relationship between non-Charismatic churches and charismatic churches as the result of the high increasing number of original church people who moved to the Charismatic church. It is because Christians in Semarang are mostly more interested in taking worship in the Charismatic church.

Abstract

The non-cooperative nationalist organization movement in the 1930s came under pressure from the colonial government through the enactment of vergader verbod so that most of the non-cooperative nationalist organizations dissolved and their former cadres joined the cooperative organization movement. The New PNI as a non-cooperative nationalist organization was still able to survive in the midst of a repressive government and economic depression that hit the Dutch East Indies economy. The discussion in this article focuses on the ups and downs of the New PNI movement in 1931-1942. The method used in this research was the historical method consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings indicated that the New PNI was still able to survive in the dynamics of the Indonesian independence movement even though it had to experience downturn from August 1933 to 1942 as an implication of vergader verbod. The factors that allowed the New PNI to survive were changing the movement pattern to an underground movement and rearranging the organizational structure when the New PNI leaders were arrested by PID. The survival of the New PNI in the dynamics of the independence movement proved the success of cadre education carried out by the New PNI.

Abstract

This study focusses on Hati Kudus Tuhan Yesus Church (Gereja Ganjuran) which built in the early 20th century by two brothers namely Dr. Joseph Ignaz Julius Maria Schmutzer and Ir. Julius Robert Anton Maria Schmutzer. These brothers' missions are different compared to other missions. They emphasize acculturation between Catholic values and Javanese culture. Explicitly, Catholic and Javanese culture are seen as different values. However, in its mission journey, the Schmutzer brothers were able to prove that those two values could be combined, matched, made interconnected with other values and they did not conflict with each other. Their Catholic mission was running well and achieving huge success. By using the historical method and emphasized archival studies, this study identifies the success factors of disseminating and maintaining local cultural values in spreading Catholic missions among Ganjuran Parish. This article answers that strong and maintained acculturation in Ganjuran is inseparable from preservation activities by the local community. One of the efforts is the Catholic community's ability to survive during a transition period. Besides, the mission has conducted a development in economics, education, and health. So, it is not surprising, if Ganjuran Church becomes one of the monuments that symbolize the Catholic mission's success conducted by Dutch people.
