Abstract

ABSTRACT Asian financial crisis in 1997 marked as a momentum of new cooperation in East Asia especially on financial sector. Several arrangements were established during and after the crisis. In 2000, the ASEAN countries along with China, Japan, and South Korea launched Chiang Mai Initiative (CMI) as a financial assistance through bilateral swap agreements among members. This achievement shows the changing foreign policy of China since its rejection of Asian Monetary Fund (AMF) proposed by Japan during the crisis. This changing behavior of China is related to its relative position compared to Japan’s at that time. Due to that, Japan in this case remains as the key factor of China’s foreign policy decision making in East Asia. Using rational actor model and the concept of national interest, this research aims to analyze the changing foreign policy of China by joining CMI as its response to Japan. Keywords: China, Japan, Chiang Mai Initiative, Sino-Japanese Competition

Abstract

ABSTRACT Australia is the seventh biggest cattle exporters in the world. It is estimated that around 60% of the cattle exported are directed to Australia’s nearest neighbor. However, according to the investigation of violations of the Australian cattle management standards in Indonesia, Australia was forced to temporarily suspend the export in 2011. Instead of providing a deterrent effect against abattoirs in Indonesia, the policy became a domestic loss for Australia, primarily the cattle producers. This study aims to describe the threat of the cattle export restraint policy in 2011 on the economic security, especially for the cattle producers in Australia. This study will be assessed by using the Economic Security, Galtung’s Violence Concepts, and theoretical approach by group in creating the public policy. Abstract

ABSTRACT China realized the economic statecraft strategy through Approved Destination Status (ADS) in Canada. ADS is an outbound tourism policy that functions as a control scheme for China's relations with countries that have been approved as tourist destinations and control of its citizens who conduct outbound tourism. The use of ADS as a form of diplomacy is because China seeks to eliminate the image of China Threat so that China can further expand its foreign policy and economic interests. The international situation also influenced China's decision to use ADS as a form of diplomacy. But since the Harper government, Canada has given harsh criticisms to China on issues of human rights, finance, investment, etc. Besides that, Canada gave an honorary citizenship title to the Dalai Lama, known for his anti-china views. China then postponed the administration of ADS as a reaction to Canada's attitude. Furthermore, this research will describe the use of ADS as economic statecraft in Canada. This research shows that ADS can function as a stick with the delay as well as providing ADS as a reward after normalization of relations after Harper's visit to Beijing in 2009. Data in this research were collected from many sources such as website, reports, journals, books etc. To analyze, this research used determinants foreign policy and economic statecraft concept. Keywords: Approved Destination Status (ADS), Tourism Diplomacy, Economic Statecraft.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to describe policy changes made by the United States to stabilize its domestic situation. During the Bush administration the United States received a shocking attack from terrorist groups. Bush made NSEERS policy to secure his country and improve the image of the United States as a large and powerful country. But the NSEERS policy implemented by Bush had a significant economic downturn for the United States. So through the next Obama era, the United States terminated the NSEERS policy. This study uses the concept of Rational Actor Choice and Determinant in an effort to explain the NSEERS policy termination decision. By using quasi-qualitative writing methods the author concludes that the United States through Obama has calculated the termination of the NSEERS, the Obama administration prioritizes economic goals rather than emphasizing security interests or public opinion during the government era before that was Bush. Abstract

ABSTRACT Territorial integrity is of paramount to a state. It is an absolute interest needed to be guarded at all cost. However, Kazakhstan agreed to support The Northern Distribution Network (NDN) and allowed US troops crossing its territory. This was done amidst existing pressures from Kazakh's two great power neighbors, Russia and China. Both states are knowingly giving potential security threats to Kazakhstan. This qualitative research analyzes the interest of Kazakhstan behind its support toward NDN access. Using Balance of Threats and National Interest concept, the research finds that Kazakhstan's border was no longer rigid as it faced far more beneficial interests both in economic and security. This suggested that guarding territorial integrity was not that absolute, at least in the context of Kazakhstan's multi-vector policy. Keywords: Northern Distribution Network, balance of threat, multi-vector policy
