Abstract

Language study relates itself to both ontology and epistemology. Both ontological and epistemological investigations have been the subject of debate and discussion in different civilizations producing a number of grammatical traditions other than the West. Arab, China, India and the ancient Near East can also boast of language traditions of greater antiquity. In terms of richness of insight and comprehensiveness of scope, both India and the Arab compete on equal terms with the West, where each grew independently of the others and for the most part developed separately, drawing on the resources of the culture within which it grew. Hence, there is strong need to have a study of comparative grammatical theory to which Indian, Arabs and Chinese also belong, centring on the questions of: What has been the importance of these theories explanatory categories appear in historically unrelated linguistic theory, and if they do, why? This perspective would bring new dimension to the study of linguistic theory and would not remain at the level of redressing the overwhelming emphasis on the European tradition in the study of history of linguistics.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the errors made by Chinese-Indonesian students of the English Department of the University of Sumatera Utara in pronouncing English vowels; to discuss the reason for those errors this research uses Richard’s theory on causes of errors; and to overcome those errors using the phonetics transcription method and repetition drills. This research uses the Praat software to analyze the phonemes through the samples’ voice recordings. This research is qualitative and quantitative research. The data of this research are voice recordings of the samples and native speakers and the questionnaire answers of the samples. It is found that the Chinese-Indonesian students of the English Department who have passed the phonology subject still produce errors in pronouncing English vowels. It is concluded that these errors are found due to the effect of their mother tongues, namely Hokkien-Indonesian. The errors are also caused by the samples’ intralingual and developmental errors. In order to overcome those errors, this research employed the phonetic transcriptions method and repetition drills and found that the methods improve the overall values of selected English vowel phonemes.

Abstract

This research focused on the types of illocutionary acts as the part of speech act use in criticism, specifically on Bima Yudho Saputro’s Criticism of Lampung Government that recently gone viral in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to find out the illocutionary acts used by Bima on his criticism. The methodology applied in this research is qualitative research with case study as the research design, and documentation as the research technique. There are 15 illocutionary speech acts in the criticism found, with 60% of representative utterance, 20% directive utterance, and 20% of expressive utterance. The result show the most frequent illocutionary speech act found in the data is representative. The researchers found the criticism indicates that Bima, the critic, mostly used his words to affirm the truth of a claim he made about something in his criticism. Cutting (2002: 17) provided evidence to support this conclusion when he said that representative speech or utterance are performances in which the speaker's beliefs are expressed through the use of language.
