Abstract

Political Cartoons (PCs), which have long been media hype, are simple drawings used to send specific critics/messages to the readers. They are, however, often overlooked and even seem to be useless in human life, i.e. in ELT. As a result, they serve as ornaments decorating the walls of the print, electronic, or online media’s columns. The messages sent desolately go far away. To linguistically benefit them, the objectives of this mini research were to identify the techniques of analysing PCs and cartoonist’s goals, and explain their contributions to the EFL students’ Pragmatic Competence (PC), Authentic Vocabulary Knowledge (AVK), and language Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The qualitative paradigm used as a method of searching, collecting, processing, and analysing the data. The subject (respondents/informants) was the PNP’s English department students while the object (source of the data) was the two PCs which were then distributed to be analysed by the students. The library study and documentation were techniques of data collection while interpretational analysis used to analyse the data. The findings are (1) techniques of analysing PCs are Subject, Caption, Action, Message/theme, Symbols (SCAMS); (2) persuasive techniques used to identify the cartoonist’s goals in persuading the readers to think a certain way about a current issue are Symbolism, Exaggeration, Labelling, Analogy And Irony (SELAI). (3) These techniques contributed to enhance students’ PC, AVK and HOTS. In conclusion, PCs are media which can be used in enhancing EFL students’ PC, AVK and HOTS.

Abstract

The facts disclosed that some Indonesian ED students have difficulty disassembling the SIM in a practical sense. The scopes, focusing on merely learning factual knowledge of linguistic pragmatics and plus discussing the Western-based cases in point provided which are contrary to the Indonesian ED students’ real-world life social contexts, are the major quandaries of the students’ difficulties. The researcher, therefore, proposed such a title to practically bridge the students’ critical quandaries in interpreting the SIM. This was a qualitative method whose complete participation, field-notes, interviews, and iterative model and the 1984 Miles and Huberman Interactive model were the techniques of collecting and analysing the data respectively. The principal results practically signified that the poem-based SofLP’s inculcation better improve the Indonesian ED students’ pragmatic competence, HOTs (cognitive process and knowledge domains), linguistic intelligence and language skills. Besides, through poem, the pragmatic language teacher is encouraged to exploit the instructional strategies to establish and develop the students’ space practice, retrieval practice, elaboration, and collaboration. In conclusion, even though it seems weird, the poem or other literary works and digital media can critically serve as the learning media assisting the students acquire the SofLP.

The 25 preschool children were judgementally selected as research participants. The finding indicated that this study practically affects the children’s linguistic intelligence of “word smarts, “lexical meaning smarts,” “semantic meaning smarts” and “grammatical word order smarts,” “digital awareness,” “digital competence,” “critical thinking skills (HOTS),” and 4C skills. In conclusion, this research enables the children to make connections between known and new words, to distinguish shades of word’s meaning, help them become word choosy, and ease them to gradually understand spoken and written language along with the abilities to talk and write themselves. It also enhances the children knowledge and understanding of related lexis and vocabulary skills, assists them to make connection and predictions, and improve comprehension.

Abstract

“Freedom of Learning” is the MECRI Nadiem Makarim’s sensational policy. Its top goals are to provide students with freedom of thinking and urge teachers to shift their education paradigms from traditional to contemporary ones. However, the facts assume that such a policy is trumping up and secretly includes Indonesian education in a list of the secular capitalist-style curriculum. The facts seem biased and even counter-productive if they are left unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to diagnose the meaning of the policy in John Dewey’s pragmatic philosophy and its effects. This was qualitative research. Observation was a technique for collecting the data. Miles and Huberman’s model was a technique for analyzing the data. Credibility and dependability were used to examine the validity of the data. The results showed that the implied meaning of Makarim’s freedom of learning policy is interpreted as a process of building students’ reality through interaction with their real life. Knowledge is based on students’ experiences and constructed using scientific methods. The teacher’s role is to develop the students’ critical and creative thinking skills through scientific process. The curriculum prepares students for changes, research and verification, and problem-solving activities. More importantly, the policy urges to bring the classes closer to digital technology and e-devices, arouses students’ global awareness and learning skills of the 7C’s X 3C’s + 1I’s. In conclusion, the policy aims to advance the value and quality of education for Indonesian in the current era of digital technology.   “Merdeka Belajar” adalah kebijakan sensasional Mentri Pendidikan R.I.
