Abstract

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystem forests are tropical coastal vegetation communities, which has the ability to grow in coastal area with tidal and muddy environment. Several functions of mangrove ecosystem forest such as ecological functions can be used for coastal protection, trapping sediment and strengthen the coastal ecosystems. Coastal waters in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara have natural mangrove ecosystem with a huge potency and advantages to the region. This study aimed to understand the condition of mangrove ecosystem based on satellite image analysis of Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) in 2014 and assess the potency, information related to the utilization by community. Data collection in this study were combined from satellite imagery interpretation with interview and questionnaires. The results showed that the mangrove forest extent in Dompu Regency Coastal Waters were about 90,631 ha with uniformity index 0.68 (medium uniformity). Two mangrove species were found in the region namely Rhizopora stylosa and Rhizopora apiculata and used by the community for several purposes such as firewood, natural coastal protection from tidal, waves and abrasion, also for crabs and fish spawning ground.

Abstract

Parameter kimia; kebutuhan oksigen biologis (BOD), oksigen terlarut (DO), derajat keasaman (pH), kadar amonia, dan unsur hara (Nitrat-NO3, Fosfat PO4 dan Klorofil-a).

Abstract

This study aims to determine oceanographic characteristics such as tides, waves, and currents in Karimunjawa Coastal Waters during the 1st transitional season and to update the oceanographic database for spatial management evaluation in the region. The tidal characteristics were obtained from the least square method analysis using World Tide software based on Matlab programming language, while wave and current characteristics obtained from 2-dimensional numerical modeling using Mike 21 software on the flow model and spectral wave module. The primary data used were the significant wave height (Hs), wave peak period (Tp), and ocean current components (u and v velocity) on 13-26 May 2016 using the Sontex Argonaut XR type Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) equipment. Tide data were predicted for the Kemujan Islands station from 1-31 March 2020. Secondary data for additional numerical model input were obtained from ERA5-reanalysis in the form of Hs, Tp, u, and v wind velocity data for May 2020 with a temporal resolution of 20 minutes, while bathymetry data derived from GEBCO Satellite Derivated Bathymetry (SDB) data. The tide analysis results showed that Karimunjawa waters are a single daily mixed tidal type. The wave characteristic moves from east to west with high waves reached 0.9 meters and a peak period of 7 seconds. The eastern side of Karimunjawa Island, Kemujan Island, and the western area have a calmer wave. The current characteristic moves northeastward with a speed of 5-28 cm/s, which concludes that in several locations, such as the Menjangan Besar-Menjangan Kecil strait, the currents depend on the tidal conditions.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country with numbers of natural resources including bays. As a closed estuary, bay has a strategic role as one of the ecological resources and environmental services. Saleh Bay is an outstanding bay of West Nusa Tenggara province which is situated between Sumbawa regency and Dompu regency. The study aimed to explain the criteria for the determination of a bay based on UNCLOS and bathymetry system by using Geographic Information System (GIS). The results of the identification indicated that the Ocean Map issued by Dishidros had not entirely referred to the criteria of UNCLOS in determining an area as a bay, in which an indentation is regarded as a bay if its total area is larger than the area of t he semi-circle whose diameter is a line drawn across the mouth of that indentation. Subsequently, spatial analysis found out that the depth of the waters in Saleh Bay can be classified into eleven classes, which are: (1) 0 – 10 meter with area of 294.27 km2, (2) 10 - 20 meter with area of 205.45 km2, (3) 20 - 30 meter with area of 259.45 km2, (4) 30 - 40 meter with area of 146.25 km2, (5) 40 - 50 meter with area of 137,83 km2, (6) 50 - 60 meter with area of 148.19 km2, (7) 75 - 100 meter with area of 57.08 km2, (8) 100 - 150 meter with area of 73.78 km2, (9) 150 - 200 meter with area of 109.46 km2, (10) 200 - 300 meter with area of 533.42 km2 , and(11) >300 meter with area of 134.89 km2.

Abstract

Ornamental coral is one of the trading commodities targets with high demand in all of the world because of its color and unique shape. Various types of ornamental corals are usually found in a specific area and out of reach, where one of them situated in water depth that it so difficult to find. West Nusa Tenggara Province is known as one of the ornamental coral suppliers that has not been touched much by research related to the existence of ornamental coral natural resources. This study aims to obtain preliminary data on the existence of ornamental coral, especially in Saleh Bay waters. Observations carried out from 6 to 11 May 2015 at 6 locations, determined based on distance from the mainland with respective representation, which divided into categories such as near, medium and far using the straight-line transect methods for coral reefs condition, while belt transect methods used for ornamental corals assessment. The results showed the health of coral reefs in good condition with the cover above 50% at all stations except station 4 (medium category), where Acropora coral species dominated at stations 5 and 6 (distant category). The bottom substrate dominated by coral fragments and dead corals with algae (DCA), which are found 28 genera of ornamental corals and considered as trade commodities such as Euphyllia glabrescens, Euphyllia cristata, Euphyllia ancora, Echinophora sp, Gonioporasp, Lobophyllia sp, Physogyra sp, Merulina sp, and Turbinaria sp. The research location can be used as a permanent study area for ornamental coral focus subject and as an indicator for sustainable ornamental coral management in the region.
