Abstract

The results of previous research on the relationship between economic growth and poverty have shown inconclusive results. This could be due to the fact that the relationship between these variables is indirect. Therefore, this study tries to introduce employment opportunity as a mediating variable. In addition, the authors also examined the effect of control variables consisting of dependency ratio, education, and infrastructure. The data used in this study are panel data of 6 provinces on Java Island in the period of 2000-2017. The methods used in this study are path analysis and multiple linear regression. The results  show that employment opportunity perfectly mediates the relationship between poverty and economic growth. This study also found that dependency ratio and education had a significant effect on poverty, while infrastructure had a negative, but insignificant effect on poverty. The perfect mediating effect implies that economic growth will reduce poverty only if the economic growth is able to generate employment opportunities. These findings imply the importance of inclusive growth that gives access to the poor to work and business opportunities.

Abstract

The Special Province of Yogyakarta does not to allow non-native Indonesian citizens residing in the Province of DIY to possess land titles. This study aims to analyze the effect of ethnic discrimination on poverty by adding control variables such as working capital credit, investment credit, economic and education infrastructure. It employs time series data in the period 2000-2018 and are analyzed using multiple linear regression with ordinary least Square (OLS) model. The results show that working capital credit and investment credit have a negative and significant effect on poverty.  Ethnicity has a positive and significant effect on poverty. Education infrastructure has a significant effect on poverty. The findings imply the need for a review of the policy on the prohibition of land ownership and the need for the performance of the banking sector in the form of lending as well as the need to support human resources improvement through improving educational infrastructure and promoting  the quality of teachers in reducing the number of poor people.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the income of coffee farmers and the added value of the coffee industry. The population in this study amounted to 25 coffee farmers in Gambuhan Village. Retrieval techniques with direct interviews with coffee farmers and data analysis using profit analysis and Hayami method. The results showed that coffee farmers' income was IDR 3,421,000.00 and profits were IDR 2,742,450.00. The added value of the coffee industry is Rp45,887.00 per kilogram with 99.87 percent of the added value received by the owner of the coffee industry and 0.31 percent received by the workforce. This finding implies that coffee farmers should sell their crops to consumers, thereby reducing farmers' dependence on middlemen. This can be a strategy to increase the income and welfare of coffee farmers in Gambuhan village. Abstract

Previous studies on the association between migration outflow and income inequality have shown mixed findings. Some find that migration outflow reduces income inequality, but others find that migration outflow increases income inequality. This study aims to analyze the effect of migration outflow on income inequality in Central Java Province with two control variables: mean years of schooling and minimum wage. Central Java was chosen as the research location because it is the province with the highest migration outflow. This study uses secondary, time series data for the period 2000-2018 consisting of income inequality as measured by the Gini ratio (percent), migration outflow (people), meanyears of schooling (years), and minimum wage (rupiah). Data were obtained from BPS Central Java and analyzed with multiple linear regression. The results show that migration outflow and mean years of schooling have a negative significant effect and minimum wage has a positive significant effect on income inequality. This findings imply that migration outflow and improvement of the quality of human resources through education can be solutions to reduce poverty and income inequality, while minimum wage actually increases inequality, which may be due to the large portion of population engaging in agriculture and the informal sector.

Abstract

Infrastructure development is needed to encourage economic growth. However, infrastructure development requires land acquisition, which may adversely impact the community. This study aims to analyze the impact of Kertajati International Airport construction on the farm households’ income and welfare level. This research data used primary data with a simple random sampling method to select 76 farm households in the most affected village. The analysis techniques were income analysis and paired sample t-test. The results showed that farm income was significantly higher before the airport construction. Nevertheless, off-farm income increased after the airport construction, leading to an insignificant household income difference before and after the land acquisition. As for the prosperity level, on average, the farm households lived below the decent living standard. The results imply the importance of increasing farmers’ capacity so that that compensation funds can be utilized to increase household income.
