Abstract

Intercultural communication focuses on the importance of understanding other’s language and cultural background in order to create appropriate and effective communication. This article reviews several studies on intercultural competence from five different countries. The objective of this review is to present research from different context, models of intercultural communication developed in those settings and possible adaptive models to develop in Indonesian higher educational settings. Data were obtained from a careful review of international articles on the study of intercultural communication using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result of the review reveals that culture is still the biggest issue that could block effective and relevant communication. For that reason, intercultural communication, (IC) positively contribute to the development of cultural sensitivity and is open for adaptation to work in different context. Suggestions on effective model of intercultural education at university level and applicable sample of collegial relationship among academics are also provided.

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to explore the learning strategies of male and female students and to discuss those strategies in relation to gender differences. This research was conducted in one senior high school in Makassar, Indonesia. The number of respondents was 71 students taken randomly by using Slovin formula among 250 students. The study used quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were collected by using a questionnaire of SILL whereas the qualitative data were taken by using interview. The learning strategies were discussed based on Oxford?s learning strategies (1990) whereas the notion of gender differences in relation to learning strategies was discussed in the framework of gender differences in communication proposed by Lakoff (1975, 1976) and (Tannen, 1990, 1994). Findings from the questionnaire show that female students use cognitive, compensation, and affective strategy more often compared to male students while male students use memory, metacognitive, and social strategy more often compared to female students. Findings from the interview show that female and male students chose different learning strategies. In addition, those learning strategies were influenced by the notion of gender differences in communication. These findings significantly give beneficial inputs to the process of English language teaching in order to create effective teaching and classroom interaction. It also provides significant contribution to the study on language and gender in communication in a setting of education and language teaching.

Abstract

The emergence of the Covid-19 as the global pandemic with its social and physical distancing consequence has affected educational practices. This paper reports the expereince of carrying out a study on applying youtube video for writing of descriptive text in EFL Class. The purpose of this research was to find out whether the videos can develop students’ ability in writing descriptive text or not.  The study took place in the time before and during the covid-19 emergence. As quantitative research, this study applied pre-experimental design. The participant of this research was the 1st year students of one of the prominence senior high schools in Manado, Indonesia. They were 26 students of language class. The results indicated that the mean score of the post-test is significantly higher that of the pre-test. This points out that the use of YouTube video in teaching the writing of descriptive text is effective. However, the emergence of Covid-19 pandemic influenced the implementation of intervention that later affected students’ achievement. The result of this study is not fully in line with the outcome of the previous studies which hypothetically resulted in two to four gains of scores. In addition, it implies that the use of YouTube video in this pandemic transition period seems to be helpful mostly to low level students as they displayed higher gains. Besides, this study denotes the challenges for teachers and students in the Covid-19 pandemic era namely the competence in online learning, and the internet connectivity access and learning mode system.

Abstract

To fill in the gap on how tertiary educational environment’s non-native English lecturers in Indonesia use all motivational activities, this qualitative case study examined how they think about motivational strategies in the classroom, how they put the knowledge into effect, and how EFL students think about their lecturers' motivational strategies. This study focused on a single embedded design in which participants from a single organization were divided into two major clusters. Interviews with five non-native English lecturers and thirteen English Literature students, observation, and field notes were utilised. The participants believed that there are two types of motivation: natural and nurtured, with nurturing motivation receiving more attention. The instructor element is central to motivation, according to participants in both clusters. Both participants stressed the importance of getting a figure to obey. This understanding was positively reflected in practices where lecturers developed, produced, and sustained motivational teaching strategies in the classroom, demonstrating dominance. Sharing non-native English lecturers' success stories, contextualizing, and encouraging were among the study's specific activities. Motivation is essential for learning, but the type and techniques used can differ depending on the situation. These results indicate that a proper and replicable Motivational Teaching Practices (MTP) paradigm necessitated national or regional adaptations due to contextual factors. However, MTP components relevant to English Literature students were ignored by lecturers. Realising MTP’s importance may lead to successfully achieving learning outcomes in higher educational settings.

Abstract

Unlike for lecturers in Engineering, Medicine, Computer Science, and Agriculture and Biology Sciences, for Indonesian lecturers in Social Sciences and Humanities including in Linguistics and Language Education (LLE), publishing research articles in reputable or indexed international journals is very difficult. The possible cause of the difficulty is their unfamiliarity with the correct and appropriate use of rhetorical style in their articles as expected by international journal readers. This study is aimed at investigating the rhetorical of research article (RA) drafts written in English by Indonesian lecturers in Applied Linguistic and English Language Education in five different universities in Indonesia (i.e., Bengkulu University, Padang State University, Atmajaya Catholic University, Mataram University, and Makassar State University). A corpus of 20 English RA drafts was analyzed on their rhetorical and linguistic quality using a genre-based method. The results show that the majority of the RA drafts have addressed important moves in each section of the articles but in terms of the argument quality still needs improvement. This implies that the Indonesian university lecturers in LLE need to be familiar with and able to argue well in their article drafts as it is expected by international readers.

Abstract

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, this article presents online Peer-Review Circles (PRC) as an innovative and collaborative approach to academic writing, mainly proofreading and copy-editing processes. It aims to engage novice second language (L2) writers in online joint review and increase their understanding of pre-reviewing scholarly papers before submission. The authors had observed that a large number of doctoral students are still considered novice writers. Therefore, there was a need for a practical approach to improve their review skills and engage them in online PRC activities. Grounded in Monologue-Dialogue-Discussion (MDD) Circles (Manning & Jobbitt, 2018), this article extends its potential to be adopted and used beyond the classroom and mandatory ELT contexts. MDD requires three consecutive stages: 1) primary reviewer’s monologue, 2) primary and secondary reviewer’s dialogue, and 3) writer and the reviewers perform a group discussion. These activities will help the writers to look after the manuscripts simultaneously from a PRC perspective. We also developed peer review Feedback Questions (FQs) to guide the reviewers to perform meaningful discussions. The output of the PRCs will likely be an initial review or a pre-evaluation process to improve the manuscript quality, readability, and publishability.

MALL also had a positive influence in educational contexts, with students enthusiastic about utilizing it in English classes. They also believe that MALL provides them with numerous benefits when performing their tasks. Due to the challenges teachers and students encounter in applying and using MALL in ELT, such as psychological, pedagogical, and technical limits, stakeholders are expected to develop solutions and policies to achieve effective technology-oriented learning in ELT.  Keywords: Systematic review, MALL, ELT
