Abstract

This research aimed to find out the  students’ perception towards the corrective feedbacks used by the teacher in correctinng the students’ writing problems. The reseach employed descriptive method. The sample of this research  was selected by using random sampling technique. The instruments of data collection was a students’ checklist. The data of the students’ perception  towards  the  corrective  feedback stated that 59,09%  students  said  that  direct corrective  feedback help them to understand what to do to correct their errors. Next, the result shown that 54,55% of the students also mentioned that they can notice and understand their errors about   punctuation,   spelling,   and   capitalization   through   indirect   corrective feedback easily. Furthermore,  half of them or 50% of the sample students told that indirect corrective feedback encouraged them to write in a better topic and details. In conclusion, the corrective feedbacks improve student’s ability in writing especially descriptive text and the students have positive perceptions about the corrective feedbacks.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam memahami kosa kata medis di Kelas Bahasa Inggris Keperawatan “Universitas Sumatera Barat”. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dan teknik total sampling dipilih sebagai metode pengambilan sampel. Jumlah keseluruhan sampel adalah dua puluh siswa. Instrumentasi penelitian ini adalah tes kosa kata. Hasil dan data penelitian menyatakan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam memahami kosa kata kedokteran berada pada taraf cukup baik hingga sangat baik. Sekitar 45% atau sekitar sembilan siswa berada pada tingkat sangat baik dalam memahami kosa kata medis, mereka mendapat nilai 82-92 dan tujuh di antaranya atau sekitar 35% pada tingkat baik. Nilai mereka berada di antara 72-78 dan sisanya, sekitar 20% atau empat siswa berada di level yang adil. Nilai mereka berada di kisaran 56-66. Kesimpulannya, enam belas siswa atau 80% dari total sampel berada pada tingkat baik hingga sangat baik dalam memahami kosa kata medis berdasarkan nilai mereka pada kisaran 72-92. Selanjutnya empat siswa atau 20% berada pada level cukup karena nilai mereka berkisar antara 56-66.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see the student’s understanding in identifying and classifying parts of speech at English Subject. Parts of speech are English basic component in which words are recognized and classified based on their lexical functions. They consist of eight major parts of speech, such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and interjections. The instrument of this study is written test, there are two kinds of test: first, Identifying the italic word in a sentence and second is classifying the words that consist of 30 words about parts of speech then the participants sort them and classify into the table. The participants of this study are 40 students that consist of four majors; mining engineering, industry engineering, environmental engineering and information system students. From each major the researcher took 10 students. Based on the results of the research, it can be stated that the students’ understanding of parts of speech are varied on the range of 40%-90%. The lowest is ability to understand adverb, only 40% or 16 students ably to identify it, the highest one is Interjection, 90% or abou 36 students easily point out it.
