Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the language deviation in a poem entitled The Ruined Maid by Thomas Hardy. In writing a poem, every poet has a poetic license to gain the beautiful poem even it creates language deviation. The poetic license may be ignoring the ordinary rule in making a word, phrase, or even sentence. The author of this poem, Thomas Hardy, is a good poet in performing his ideas through his poem. He intended to make his poem, The Ruined Maid, become unique and eye-catching poem. In Thomas Hardy’s The Ruined Maid, it can be concluded that there are five language deviations which is occurred. They are lexical deviation, grammatical deviation, graphological deviation, semantic deviation, and historical deviation. The language deviations are used to make a beautiful poem. Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the use of English of the teachers and students at State Junior High School 1 Magelang as a pilot international standard school. The objectives of this study are (1) to find out the frequencies and percentages of the use of English spoken by teachers and students and (2) to describe the types of the occurrence of English sentences, clauses, and phrases spoken by teachers and students. This study was descriptive-qualitative. The subjects were two teachers and forty-eight students of 8B and 8C in State Junior High School 1 Magelang in the school year 2010/2011. The object of this study was the transcript of teachers and students’ utterances indicating the use of English during teaching and learning process in the classroom. The data were collected through observation and audio-taped of the teaching and learning processes. The results of the study are as follows. First, the teachers’ frequencies and percentages of English sentences are 176 sentences from the total number of 220 sentences or 80%, while the students’ frequencies and percentages of English sentences are 72 sentences from the total of 92 sentences or 78.26 %. Both the teachers’ and the students’ quality of English is very good since they make only a few incorrect English sentences. Second, the four types of English sentences are declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory; the two types of clauses found in English sentences are independent clauses and dependent clauses; and the four types of phrases found in English sentences are noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify frequent errors in the written texts made by students ofWidya Dharma University Klaten in academic year 2014/2015. This study was categorized into a case studysince it limited the participants to the students of second semester in Widya Dharma University Klaten. Thedata sources of the research were written texts made by the students. The data were students’ errors, whichwere analyzed through classification, frequency counting, and description.The finding of the study shows that there were forty three errors made by the students in their writtentexts. These errors can be classified into eleven types of errors. These are associated with the use of verbs(25.6%), punctuations (4.6%), articles (16.3%), prepositions (2.3%), plural/singular nouns (14%), spellings (14%),pronouns (9.4%), parts of speech choices (4.6%), word orders (2.3%), word choices (4.6%), and miscellany(2.3%). The most frequent error is related to the verb uses and the least frequent errors are related to theprepositions, word orders, and miscellany.Keyword : error, writing, students writing

Abstract

Writing is one of the main skill in learning English which is conclude on productive skill in the abilityof producing language. In the university, writing skill has an expected that the students couldmastering in the academic writing level. It has an aim that the students could write at least the abstractof their research paper in English. In Widya Dharma University of Klaten, the writing skill givenfrom the early semester integrated with the other three skills (listening, reading, and speaking). In theprocess of teaching and learning, it is found that the writing skill of the technical information studentswas not satisfying. This research is described the problems faced by the students in masteringacademic English writing in Technical Information of Widya Dharma University of Klaten. Abstract

Film is one communication media to deliver message. This study investigates speech act in the film by using pragmatics approarch. Children film is chosen since children indirectly get new vocabulary in the form of word, phrase, or sentence through film. This study is entitled ‘A Pragmatic Study on the Function of Speech Act in Disney Princess Film’. It covers one important thing, such as the function of speech act in children film. This is descriptive qualitative study which reveals the data collection on the film transcript through the character’s dialogue in the film. The result of this study are as follow. The function of speech act in the children film are a) representative speech act is used to stating, insisting, reporting, summarizing, describing, proposing, and confronting; b) expressive speech act is used to asking apologize, praising, regretting, showing like or love, and showing fear; c) commisive speech act is used to promising, offering, and rejecting; and d) directive speech act is used to commanding, ordering, requesting, asking, and forcing. This result shows the function of speech act which is used in children film. Those speech act is usually imitated and restated by the children who watch movie in their daily life.

Abstract

The present study deals with the features of long sentences in the novel The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This study aimed to identify the features of long sentences found in the novel and to suggest ways to comprehend the long sentences. This study is beneficial for the development of English teaching, particularly the structure course. The data were in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences used in the novel which were collected through observation method (metode simak). Descriptive qualitative method was employed for analysing the data. The results indicated that most of the sentences were compound complex. Each clause can be identified through its subject, predicate, object, and adverb or complement. Each subordinate clause could be un-derstood by identifying the word(s) modified and introductory word used. By identifying the main clause, sub-ordinate clause, parts of a main clause, subordinate clause, and kinds of phrases, the reader can under-stand the long sentences. In addition, most of the main clauses were pre-ceded by adverbials.

Abstract

This study aims to test the model whether attitude towards, subjective norms, perceived behavior control in the theory of Planned Behavior have a positive influence on entrepreneurial intentions and behaviors of private university female students in Klaten Regency. The research design was carried out using a quantitative method which explains the causal relationship between one dependent variable which is influenced by three independent variables and one mediating variable. Hypothesis testing is formulated in the model using the multivariate test. The population in the research were all university students in the Klaten Regency area who had started the initial ultra-micro business. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling as many as 180 respondents of female students as initial business actors.The final result of the quantitative model test using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) shows that there is a positive influence on attitude towards entrepreneurship and perceived behavior control on entrepreneurial intentions and behaviors. Meanwhile, one variable in the form of subjective norms does not significantly influence it. Future research can expand the model through testing the antecedents of intention to behavior by developing research designs through experimental research.

Abstract

This study purposes to describe the forms of deixis in the drama written by Lucille Fletcher. This is descriptive qualitative study. The sources of the data are in the form of word and phrase in the drama script written by Lucille Fletcherentitled Sorry, Wrong Number. Based on the data findings, the form of deixis in the drama script Lucille Fletcher’s Sorry, Wrong Number are the person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, and social deixis. The highest occurrence on the forms of deixis in Lucille Fletcher’s Sorry, Wrong Number is person deixis. It means that person deixis is the most common type used by the characters in Lucille Fletcher’s Sorry, Wrong Number to communicate between each character in order to deliver their message due to the plot of the drama.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze literature learning material Class X SMA-MA-SMK in Curriculum Bahasa Indonesia 2016. The method is descriptive by referring to the stylistics study. The problem is how is the linguistic description of literature learning material above?. The findings can be concluded that the poet uses the single and complex sentences. It also uses the rhetorical sentence, parallelism, repetition, metaphor, and climax in poems. The chosen vocabulary by the author is the common vocabulary which they use in our daily life, however it has special meaning when it is arranged in the form of poetry. The imagination in their poems is very strong. It can be seen through visual, auditory, and tactile. Keywords: stylistics study, linguistics aspect, literature material, curriculum 2016
