Abstract

Abstract

INTRODUCTION:Cervical cancer is a malignant infectious disease caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in the cervix. Fig and olive oil containing flavonoid has been shown to have antioxidant and anticancer activity.OBJECTIVE:This study aimed to evaluate antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of combined Ficus carica L. and Olea europeae L. against HeLa cervical cancer cells.METHODS: This is an experimental study with a post-test only control group design. The HeLa cells were divided into 5 groups: fig extract, olive oil, combined fig extract and olive oil (at the ratio of 1:3, 1:1, 3:1), positive control (doxorubicin). The cytotoxic and antioxidant activity were evaluated by using MTT Assay and DPPH, respectively. The cytotoxic results were analyzed using probit and antioxidant activity was analyzed by using linear regression to obtain IC50 values.RESULTS:The IC50 cytotoxic of fig extract, olive oil, combined fig extract and olive oil (at the ratio of 1:3, 1:1, 3:1) with positive control (doxorubicin) were 13063,915 μg/mL, 679,593 μg/mL, 1562,356 μg/mL, 746,923μg/mL, 563,626 μg/mL and 13,707 μg/mL respectively. The IC50 antioxidant of fig extract, olive oil, and combination of fig extract and olive oil (3:1) was 105.9272 ppm, 23.1276 ppm, and 21,0689 ppm respectively.CONCLUSION:The combination of fig extract and olive oil (3:1) was shown to have the highest antioxidant and cytotoxic activity against HeLa cervical cancer cells.

Abstract

Background: Green tea, is one of the herbs that have been proven to be effective as an anti-acne, among others.Green tea leaves contain 30-40% polyphenols known as catechins most of which are antimicrobial. For ease of use, the ethanolic leaf extract of green tea is made in cream. This study aimed to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of ethanolic extract of green tea leaves in cream on the physical properties and antibacterial activity of acne bacteria in particular.Design and Method: In this study, green tea leaf extract condensed obtained by maceration using 50% ethanol solution. Cream formula that is made in five concentration ethanolic extract of green tea leaves 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9% use a modified formula antiacne cream. Cream tested physical properties include homogenity, percent separation, dispersive power and adhesion. During the antibacterial activity was also tested. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann Whitney test with a level of 95%.Results: The preparation cream ethanolic leaf green tea extract at various concentrations have good homogenity and not separate, the greater concentration of cream ethanolic extract of green tea leaves get smaller power and energy dispersive adhesion, whereas the inhibitory against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is getting biger. Conclusion: Cream ethanolic extract of green tea leaves that are comparable with the positive control (Ristra acne creaming) the physical properties and the antibacterial activity at a concentration of 7% (Sains Medika, 4(2):147-156).

Abstract

Background: To date, green tea leaf waste is not well utilized, the waste is remain considered as a waste. Previous studies found that green tea leaf waste still have a fairly high EGCG content. EGCG has benefits as an antibacterial. Utilization of green tea leaf waste started from formulation until the diversification of multiple emulsion w/o/w products has not been reported. Objective: To develop anti acne cream (W/O/W) multiple emulsion containing green tea leaf waste and evaluate its antibacterial activity against acne-inducing bacteria of Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes).Methods: Phase one of this research was green tea leaves was extracted by infundation and fractionation method using ethyl acetate and prepared in different concentration (1% to 6%). The second stage was ethyl acetate fraction of green tea leaf extract was tested for its antibacterial activity against P.acnes. Third stage was tested physical properties of formulation with w/o/w multiple emulsion. Results: The optimal antibacterial activity of ethyl acetate fraction of green tea leaf extract against P.acne was at the concentration of 6%, with inhibition zone of 32.6 mm ±0.57. The formula of w/o/w multiple emulsion loaded with green tea leaves waste of 6% active substance demonstrated a good physical properties which can spread 90.4 cm2 ± 0.03, pH 5.00 ± 0.02 and microscopic analysis showed multiple emulsion w/o/w.Conclusion: The concentration of 6% green tea leaf waste formulated in multiple emulsion had a good physical and antibacterial activity for a referred standard. It is necessary to test the stability of multiple emulsion formula.
