Abstract

Al-Falimbān's thoughts in the ancient text of Sayr al-Sālikīn Ilā 'Ibādati Rabb al-Ālamn have influenced the dynamics of Malay Islamic society. One of the discussions in the text is the study of sanctification [ṭahārah]. This article examines the concept of al-Falimbānī ahārah in the Sayr al-Sālikīn text and its correlation with the observance of the Islamic Malay community in the 18th century. This journal has been carried out using a philological method with a content analysis approach. The results showed that the concept of the sanctity of Al-Falimbān, which is believed to be the standard of holiness that a Malay Muslim mukallaf should practice, is physical and spiritual purity. Physical purity is defined as removing all kinds of sensory and sensory impurity, while spiritual purity is defined as the ability to remove sensual and immaterial impurities.

Abstract

Abstract

The ratification of Law Number 18 of 2019 concerning Islamic Boarding Schools on September 24, 2019, has given a new color and direction for implementing Islamic education in Indonesia. History has carved out the significant contribution of pesantren, both taking part in repelling colonialism and educating generations of the nation, even pesantren as the oldest educational institution in Indonesia. So far, the regulation of Islamic boarding schools has only been a small part of Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System, and its speed only supports Government Regulation Number 55 of 2007 concerning Religious Education and Religious Education. These two legal policies still make pesantren unable to develop like other public education. The Law on Islamic Boarding Schools; making the existence of Islamic boarding schools stronger legally and impacts the state's obligation to be present in helping the pace of its development. This research was conducted with an analytical study model with a qualitative approach. The study results indicate that the pesantren institution is still maintained as full ownership in a private framework. Pesantren has three functions; education, propaganda, and community empowerment. Pesantren are also entitled to receive allocations of funds from the central and local governments. Abstract

This paper aims to pursue appropriate strategies to shape students’ characters and sense of nationalism through formal education in Aceh. Grounded in the structured interviews, focused group discussions, and observations, this qualitative case study reveals that Aceh, as one province in Indonesia, which was trapped in prolonged army conflict, needs character education that focuses on the nation-state paradigm. The contemporary Acehnese society is also facing new cultural, ethnic, inter-religious conflicts, as well as internal conflicts among Muslims. The seed of these conflicts becomes increasingly worse when infiltrated by the contemporary political interests in the province. During the era of military conflict, Pendidikan Moral Pancasila (Pancasila Moral Education) was deemed “a dangerous” subject to be taught in Aceh schools due to its contradictory nature against the ideology of Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (Free Aceh Movement). Despite downgrading the students’ spirit of nationalism, such situation has gradually been changed since a peace agreement between the two parties, Indonesian government and Gerakan Aceh Merdeka, was achieved in August 2005. Nevertheless, this demonstrates the need to overhaul curriculum and instructional strategies in the pursuit of the democratization in the province.

Abstract

Tolerance is the key to living comfortably, peacefully and happily. In the life of the people and the nation, tolerance has become the benchmark in realizing the advance of a country, as reflected in the Charter of Medina that the Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h formed a state on the basis of Islamic values, one of which was tolerance. A state or community will embrace safety and peace once its people live in mutual tolerance. In this study, there were three questions needed to be addressed: (1) What is the concept of tolerance in Islam?, (2) What is the attitude of tolerance between religious believers and social tolerance according to Islamic religious education lecturers at UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh? and (3) How is the response of the Islamic religious education lecturers of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh towards the study which concluded that the city of Banda Aceh was of low tolerance? This study used the qualitative approach with field research methods, employing primary and secondary data. The results of the study revealed that the main criterion in defining religious tolerance was found in the Qur’an Surah al-Kafirun verse 6, while that in defining the social tolerance was in Surah an-Nisaa verse 86. The attitude of tolerance that the Prophet p.b.u.h had shown on various occasions was very comprehensive regardless of place and person, in any capacity. Therefore, the attitude of tolerance of the Prophet p.b.u.h had become a reference for every community to this day and he was also dubbed as the role model (Uswatun Hasanah). Responding to the finding of low tolerance in the city of Banda Aceh from a study, most respondents, however, believed otherwise. They agreed that Banda Aceh has already been a very tolerant city in terms of religious and social aspects in Indonesia. Thus, such low tolerance could not be generalized to all aspects and concluded that the city of Banda Aceh was an intolerant city or had a low tolerance level.

Abstract

Diversity in Indonesia is part of the nation and should be embraced by its people. Managing diversity requires high tolerance. School is the best place to prepare the next generation for internalizing the values of tolerance and for respecting peace in the future. However, these values need all components of the society to properly achieve. When a school has pluralist conditions, it is important to pay attention to the students’ trust in order to successfully internalize tolerance values. Therefore, heterogenity will not produce the anti-tolerant generation. The study took place in SMA Negeri (public senior high school) 1 Lhokseumawe. The school was quite diverse and heterogenous where there were Muslim and non-Muslim students. The purposes of the study were to find out the tolerance values within Islamic education learning, to understand the internalization process, and to map the supporting and hindering factors of the internalization process of the tolerance values in SMAN 1 Lhokseumawe. This was a qualitative approach. Data were collected by interview, observation, and documentation of the school. This study resulted in some findings. Firstly, the values of tolerance received by the students included appreciation, brotherhood, freedom, cooperation, helping one another, non discrimination, and sharing. Secondly, the internalization process of the values was done in three ways: integration, the school customs, and extracurricular activities. Thirdly, the factors supporting the internalization were qualified and competent teacher, active student extracurricular activities, fair access of facilities, cooperation among teachers, support from school principal, heterogeneous awareness, active alumni, increased interest and state policy. Meanwhile, the factors hindering the internalization involved the unavailability of tolerance-based module, the unavailability of tolerance-based coaching, increased racism, religion, and other sensitive issues, and massive intolerant news from the media. It is recommended that learning module and teacher training should be tolerance specified in order to enforce the process of internalizing the tolerance values in school and reduce the intolerant issues widely spread in the mass media.

Abstract

The thoughts of al-Zarnuji and Paulo Freire are an interesting area to study since both have their respective advantages. Imam al-Zarnuji was a Muslim philosopher whose ideas are full of moral values, whereas Paulo Freire was a Western philoshopher whose ideas are full of liberation ideas in education, in which learners are led to actively engage with their own world. These two ideas are quite contrasting considering both came from totally different cultures, and thus studying their thoughts will certainly find a significant difference.
